  1. I've read and enjoyed 'A Spot of Bother' but agree with Frankie that this book is nothing like 'The Curious Incident'. I found it very funny in places and a good read, though.
  2. Not read any of this writer's stuff before, Michelle, but having read your review I'm putting this one on my letter to Father Christmas!
  3. Just started 'Italian Shoes' by Henning Mankell. It isn't an Inspector Wallander story but it's proving to be a very good read so far
  4. Thanks for the recommendation, Michelle. I will put this one on my TBR pile and look forward to reading it
  5. I've just ordered 'Redbreast' from my local library on your recommendation, Karsa!
  6. I had difficulty answering this one, too. I loved 'The Woman in White' and also most of Colin Dexter's 'Inspector Morse' stories but, if forced to choose one then it would be a P D James. But the trouble is - which one? .... Ermm - I'll get back to you!
  7. I haven't heard of him, pontalba, but will look out for this book in my local library
  8. Mark Billingham also does a bit of stand-up comedy, I believe, and some of his humour seeps through into his detective stories
  9. Just about to watch 'The Talented Mr Ripley' again.
  10. Has anyone else read any of this writer's books? I am two-thirds of the way through 'Sleepy Head', the first of the series featuring Billingham's detective, Tom Thorne, and which is set in London. I am really enjoying it. Apparently the Thorne novels have been made into a TV series that is due to start soon (on Sky 1, I think), starring David Morrisey as Thorne.
  11. I have The Snowman on my TBR list and am looking forward to it. I hope you manage to get hold of a DVD of Wallander. I have only seen the Swedish version but I know that people have enjoyed the series that had Kenneth Branagh playing Kurt.
  12. I'm reading this book, Jess, and am not enjoying it. I'm only half-way through it so may change my mind but, at the moment, I'm only sticking with it because I'm reading it with my book club
  13. I've watched and loved the Wallander series on BBC4 and have just started reading the Mankell novels. I've read about four at the time of going to press and have enjoyed them immensely. Have also started the Stieg Larsson book, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, for my book club. Can't say I'm enjoying it, though.
  14. Agreed, Chrissy.
  15. Alan Bennett - Talking Heads
  16. When I was a teenager (many years ago) I borrowed a copy of a book of short stories by H P Lovecraft. Terrifying stuff then but probably a bit tame now
  17. Anna Karenina
  18. It certainly is, Booknutt!
  19. I've just started 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'. I've heard mixed reviews but am looking forward to reading it.
  20. Apologies if anyone has already posted about this but some libraries are offering free downloads on e-books and audiobooks. There is the same time limit on borrowing as for 'real' books but worth bearing in mind if you don't wish to keep the e-book.
  21. I really enjoyed this series and look forward to the next! I also think we will see a huge increase in the amount of chaps clad in big overcoats this winter!
  22. I'm delighted to hear it!
  23. 'I'm your Man' - Leonard Cohen
