  1. Although sceptical about e-books initially, I'm now enjoying using my Kindle, too. I still read 'proper' books as well but the Kindle is so convenient when travelling. I have the wi-fi version and am able to download the books via USB transfer or, when in a branch of a well-known pub chain, browse/download using their free wi-fi ('Cloud').
  2. Thanks, Chesilbeach!
  3. That's fantastic, deneng. Thank you very much
  4. I have quite a few books on my 'Kindle for PC' thing. Does anyone know how to transfer them to the Kindle? Glad of any advice
  5. I really can't stand that advert for the 'fifty-plus' catalogue with the smug couple throwing the tea-towel at each other after he's told her she's as tasty as the dinner she's cooking
  6. Nick Drake - 'Five Leaves Left' album (Welcome back, BookJumper!)
  7. I'm really enjoying this excellent drama. It's well-written, well-acted, gripping stuff and I'm delighted to hear that there's more in the pipe-line! By the way, did anyone else notice that there was a large plaster on Vagn's neck earlier in the series? He is rather creepy, in my opinion. Might just be a red herring, though
  8. Crikey, Janet. There's more of it about than we thought! We'll just have to hope that it doesn't catch on too much or people might start sticking their fried egg in between the pages, too
  9. I've bought quite a lot of second-hand books and have found various 'bookmarks' in them including a postcard with a George VI (I think) stamp on it and a small clump of shamrock. I always flick through my library books as I return them and one of our librarians told me that one of his colleagues had found a rasher of bacon in a book that someone had been using as a bookmark!

It's going to make for an exciting series, Kylie. And you did it without Warnie, too!
  11. I think we pick it up circa 1936, pontalba. Rose is back at Eaton Place as the Housekeeper, I believe.
  12. I, too, am looking forward to it. I am also pleased that this new series is set in a different period of history to the first and is not just a remake. ITV3 often repeat the original series and my favourite character was Sarah, the maid who got into 'trouble' after a fling with Captain Bellamy
  13. Getting into the Christmas spirit by watching 'Scrooge' (the Alistair Sim version)

I can remember the Aussies going through a rough patch a few years ago, Kylie, (I think the captain's first name was Kim but I can't recall his surname). But then along came Warne etc so I'm sure they will bounce back from this.* They could still win this series, I suppose. However, saying that, I am enjoying England's triumph and hope they go on to retain the Ashes. * Hopefully not just yet, though!

Really pleased for England and hopefully we can push on from this and win the series. However, I never underestimate the Aussies and am sure they will come back at us with a vengeance.

    I like Ponting, too, Kylie
  17. Sherpa Tensing would have problems scaling my TBR pile
  18. Just started 'Our Mutual Friend' today. I like to have a go at Dickens over the festive season
  19. Thank you, willoyd! x
  20. I have most of the P D James 'Adam Dalgleish' novels on audiobook and they are read by Michael Jayston who is very good indeed, in my opinion. Also I love to listen to Winnie the Pooh and Wind in the Willows read by Alan Bennett My friend likes to listen to the 'Just William' books as read by Martin Jarvis!
  21. Me too! I think I'd want to read something that made me smile so, in addition to Wodehouse, I'd read my favourite Tom Sharpe novels, also Chocolate and Cuckoo Clocks by Alan Coren and, time allowing, Spike Milligan's books too
  22. Thanks, Michelle!
  23. I think Father Christmas may be bringing me a Kindle this year. Trouble is, I'm a bit of a technophobe and, after looking on the Amazon website regarding these gadgets, I don't know whether I'd be able to use the thing. I don't know what WiFi is so I don't suppose we have it and, as for 3G - the other method of downloading - don't think we have that either. Does anyone know if you can just download the stuff using a computer and a USB cable? (One good thing about these little devices is that you can have audiobooks on them, apparently, and I do still love being read to even at my age!)
  24. I have just got my first Nesbo from the library and am looking forward to reading it. I'm glad you think that he is nothing like Larsson as I thought Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was one of the worst books I have ever read
