  1. Carrie is a great read. My King favourites are Misery and Pet Sematary so I'd recommend those.
  2. Thanks Poppy I thought it was time for a change. I'd had the last one for years!

    Hello!

    Welcome
  4. Welcome
  5. Haha - I can understand your reaction to the twist. I think I'll give that one a miss
  6. heehee love your review of the book title Kylie
  7. I enjoyed Mere Christianity when I read it Poppy. I remember being quite impressed with it. I'm probably overdue a re-read. I'd also like to read some of his other theology books.
  8. *Quickly douses fire* I'll definitely be interested in your review of Tess Ben seeing as some people seemed to have hated it so much.
  9. Noooo Tess is a fine book! Frankenstein on the other hand: Kill with fire.
  10. I would have but I'm supposed to be away camping that weekend and will be cut off from technology. If the weather is atrocious however, I'll drop in.
  11. Hey welcome back. Yes the ending is quite strange indeed. I'm glad you liked it. I think the thing that stood out for me was the lively prose. I just love writing like that.
  12. Ah maybe not. Darn, I should have replied to this thread sooner!
  13. Oh I'd be very interested to hear what you thought of The Man who was Thursday. It's one of my favourites.
  14. I've also started reading Hens reunited by Lucy Diamond, just to give my brain a rest from philosophy.
  15. Ooh - I'd forgotten about An Alien at St Winifreds. I loved that one. Indeed. Too many books! Too little time!
  16. I love this
  17. Have you read Adrian Plass's autobiography Janet? Of all his books I think that's my favourite, it's more serious and poignant than his fiction. I also read Silver Birches recently. If you liked his other stuff you might like that too, I thought it was pretty good on the whole (It's also been published under the title Ghosts). I agree that Leonard Thin is weaker than the Sacred Diary, which I remember being quite funny, although it's years ago since I read them.
  18. Watership Down is fantastic! I only read it about 5 or 6 years ago but was blown away. It's one of my all time favourites. I still don't think I've seen the film all the way through.
  19. I love The Beach. One of my favourite books! The tesseract was quite good too. It's well written but I did feel it would have been better split into a few novellas. I've been wanting to read Mark Twain for ages. I'll be interested in what you think of these. I totally agree. The book is so much better.
  20. Sample tracks are a great idea for audio books. I've never come across samples for any of the cds I've bought but will try and find some, and do a bit more research generally next time. In other news, I think I've decided to give up on "From the Holy Mountain". It's 'ok' but perhaps not good enough to justify persevering with it. It's always a bad sign when you keep putting a book down in favour of something else.
  21. Great review poppy, it sounds really good. Might have to pop it on the wish list. I take it it's a true story? It almost sounds like fiction.
  22. Fantastic review of Catch-22 Ben, one of my all time favourite books. Oddly enough I tried to re-read it a few years ago and couldn't get into it at all. When I first read it I think I was feeling a bit dark myself at teh time which is perhaps why the dark humour and absurdity really appealed to me. I can understand why some people don't get it though. I think you need to be in the right (or perhaps that should be wrong?) frame of mind.
  23. I've sadly had to ditch Brighton Rock as the narration was just too irritating and distracting and I didn't want it to take away from the book. I think I'll have to be a bit more careful choosing narrators in the future. I guess I'll just have to read this one.
  24. PMS munchies? I tend to give in to them but without going totally OTT. I really think your body is in need of sugar at that time to replenish itself, so a couple of biscuits here and there or a little chocolate bar is OK, well that's my excuse anyway
