  1. Back to my philosophy book last night, and I also started 'From the Holy Mountain' by William Dalrymple (a travel book around the byzantine world)
  2. Shakespeare's landlord, Charlaine Harris from amazon: I finished this last night and really enjoyed it. I liked the protagonist, Lily Bard, a loner who likes cleaning and keeping fit (we had a lot in common lol, although she is a lot more extreme than me on all counts.) I enjoyed the mystery aspect, although not as clever as say an Agatha Christie, that didn't matter since the charactarisation and setting were good. A light, yet engaging read, I found I was hooked from the very first page.
  3. Great reviews Nursenblack. Your book choices sound really interesting (and diverse)
  4. Great reviews Pip. I'm looking forward to starting the Sherlock Holmes short stories on audio book soon.
  5. I think I loved the opening four chapters so much they redeemed the book
  6. Fantastic review Poppy. I too loved Dracula, although I thought the middle quarter dragged terribly and the ending was a little disappointing. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on Frankenstein. (I hated it!) Love that Karsa, I can' believe you didn't like Dracula but liked Frankenstein
  7. I first read that as "Stephen King has been in touch" and thought Wow!! But then I reread . I find him a bit hit and miss too Pontalba. So glad you enjoyed The Stand though. It's a great book.
  8. I finished I Partridge yesterday. It was very good, making me laugh out loud a lot, as well as cringe in places. If you like Alan Partridge you'll love this, if not then I'd probably give it a miss. I'm totally loving Shakespeare's landlord so far
  9. So I was in Waterstones today and a bright yellow hardback copy of Flowers for Algernon was staring at me. So I bought it. I blame you
  10. Didn't there used to be a group with all the men in it? Or are the groups now defunct after the various site upgrades and moves? As I recall there were about 20 in it.
  11. Lovely pic Pontalba. And congratulations
  12. I remember reading this in school for A Level (as part of a wider reading exercise around the authors we were studying - we were doing The Mill on the Floss for Eliot) and I really enjoyed it. Much more the Floss which I found proper hard work. Glad you liked it too! Maybe I'll re-read it some day.
  13. Sigh - oh alright then
  14. Thanks Shelley. I started it last night. It's good so far!
  15. Back to my current read: 'Think' by Simon Blackburn, although I am sorely tempted to put it to one side and start Charlaine Harris's Shakespeare's landlord tonight as it is a little heavy going and not nearly as interesting as I'd hoped. Why do I give myself such dry heavy reading all the time lol? I am also currently enjoying I Partridge on audio, which has me laughing out loud every time I'm alone in my car
  16. It's a book? (I should have guessed) I've only seen the film
  17. It's now on the wish list! I loved Shutter Island so I'm looking forward to getting hold of this one.
  18. I've never formatted one before. I would say if you're a bit of a techy type and have particular requirements and reasons to do this then you might want to look into it. Otherwise the default software and setup is probably fine for the average user.
  19. Did anyone persevere with this? I watched season finale the other night. Overall I thought it was quite a good series. I did love the twist where I'm not certain I'll watch the next series, but am thinking I'll probably give it a go. I wonder how many series a show like this will work for though.
  20. That is outrageous! Call me naive but it just wouldn't have occurred to me that that would go on.
  21. Finished the Futurama graphic novel last night. Not exactly a taxing read but a welcome interlude.
  22. Spot on!
  23. Glad you enjoyed Sherlock Holmes. I have four stories from that collection on audio cd and looking forward to listening to them soon. Looking forward to your thoughts on Dracula when you get back to it. I really enjoyed it for the most part, but ... well I'll leave my comments for when you've finished it Good luck with all your reading and congrats on the review!
  24. Thanks Ruth, I'll check out the film. I think I'd like to read (as opposed to listen to) the book some day too. Hmm - Flowers for Algernon? My TBR is already bursting at the seams but thanks for the recommendation
  25. Electric Sheep is great, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm intrigued to read A Scanner Darkly now.
