  1. Very good point.
  2. Have you read any George Orwell? Richard Adams The girl in a Swing is an interesting book, although I'm not sure it strictly meets your requirements.
  3. So sad. What an incredible waste
  4. Oh drat I completely forgot!
  5. Kylie this is a lovely thread, thank you for starting it. Sorry to hear you're not feeling great. Hope you feel better soon.
  6. No - it was all very hidden away on the top floor of one of the buildings (a different building to mine). I didn't even spot anyone famous (or even crew come to that) in the carpark where all the big winebago type trucks were.
  7. Oh - Oh - exciting info: They were filming the new series on site where I work (in one of the buildings). I made sure I took my lunchtime walk in full view of the windows, just in case (million in one chance) they were pointing and rolling the cameras my way at the time
  8. Well last night I did something I never do - which is give up on a book less than 100 pages from the end! I had been finding The Clan of the Cave Bear flagging as soon as it hit the Clan Gathering; all the described competitions were very tedious - and then just as the story starts to perk up, we see which I just found ridiculous. So I started Donna Tarts The Little Friend instead. I have also started Bywyd Blodwen Jones - a novel for welsh learners, a humorous diary formatted story about a welsh learner. It's really good so far - very funny, but I have been advised to read it out loud so that the hearing part of my brain learns along with the understanding part, which means I need a different book to read in bed (otherwise Alex may complain lol) which is why I started the Donna Tartt one.
  9. Ooh sounds good. Can't believe I missed the first one!

    Hello!

Hi Lucy. How long have you lived in Sheffield? Do you have the Sheffield or Laandaan accent ?
  11. Hi and welcome Nice to meet you
  12. Has anyone read the Lily Bard Mysteries by Charlaine Harris? I'm looking for something light and easy to read with a touch of humour.
  13. Thanks LMB - I was beginning to think I probably wouldn't bother reading the rest of the series. By the sounds of it I wouldn't enjoy it much anyway.
  14. I am starting to enjoy it a lot more as it goes on. How did you find the rest of the series?
  15. The following book explores Myers Briggs personality types and is very interesting. The angle is church rather than work, but the information is probably transferable. Otherwise, I'm sure there are plenty of other books on Myer-Briggs type definitions. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Knowing-You-Exploring-Personality-Temperament/dp/0281057214/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1310571204&sr=1-1
  16. I agree. I was rather underwhelmed by it. I think it is, as you say, a bit hyped.
  17. Back to rainy south wales after sunny majorca. Oh well my banana liqueur cocktail is helping to take the edge off

  18. Well I didn't any Maupassant but I'm about half way through The Clan of the Cave Bear. It's quite good, though it took a while to get going. I also found some of the descriptions layered on a bit thick, especially towards the beginning, and began to get a little tired of endless detail about which berries were gathered for this purpose or that purpose. It's a pleasant enough read so far though.
  19. The Clan of the Cave Bear is going well, I'm going to enjoy it on the beach I think Am also slipping a book of Maupassant short stories into my case in case I fancy a change.
  20. I'm loving your daily replies to the questions Frankie posted. I agree with this. I was very disappointed with this book. The writing was good but somehow the story lagged for me. Like Paula I couldn't finish it. How odd. I have read and enjoyed some Misery Lit - but only because I was rooting so hard for the poor soul and enjoying seeing them overcoming adversity and as you say, surviving. I find what your friends said rather chilling.
  21. That's a shame. I've just started the Clan of The Cave Bear - just a ew pages in but so far so very good. Looking forward to getting stuck in
  22. Brilliant!! Note to self - must get my novel finished
  23. Oh no! That was the last episode of the series? I hadn't realised that. It was a great ending though. I've been loving this series. April is a long way off
  24. Finally finished It last night I thought it was very good BUT - in places I'm afraid it was just too unpleasant for me. I was finding it bad enough that but when it came to the part where I am sorry to say it has put me off Stephen King a bit. Yes I know his stuff is generally dark or downright horror but I had enjoyed everything I had read so far. I also thought the writing wasn't as tight as in some of his other stuff. However I loved the reflections of childhood aspect of the story, and the main characters, who were, as ever, well drawn. Another part I really didn't like was the bit where So overall I thought it was good, but with reservations. Next I'm going to read The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M Auel. It's going to be my holiday read so I was keen to finish "It" before we fly so I could get started on it first, which I have
