Stephen King's stunning debut novel Carrie, about a bullied high-school girl who develops telekinetic powers, springs to mind rather forcefully.
Also from Stephen King, there is Firestarter, the story of a young girl with pyrokinesis (the ability to set fire to anything using only her mind). Naturally, bad guy government types are after her... This is one of my favourite King books, I really felt affection for the main character and her father (who also has some psychic abilities - he can "push" people into doing what he wants them to do).

I'm watching it on the red button on Freeview but it's proving to be a bit of a pain. You never know when an episode is starting, so you just have to press the red button and watch with the sound off, waiting for the episode to begin, so you end up seeing spoilers etc. If they'd said earlier that it was going to be on on 5th December, I would just have waited for that.

Yeah he does. The only one that marks fairly is Craig. Ok, maybe he undermarks sometimes but he doesn't just take pity on people. I actually really like Craig
I completely agree! Craig is the fairest and he does give constructive criticism too. I like Craig too. I used to like Len but I've gone off him lately, he can be a right funny
and very aggressive with Craig too.

(1) I'm devastated that Jade had to quit. I really liked her and thought she was one of the most improved. (2) I thought it was a very poor night overall. Not one performance stood out to me, and I was bored through most of the show. I'm glad Ricky left though, he was definitely the poorest dancer tonight.
Yes, I felt really sorry for Jade. She was one of the contenders IMO.
I too am glad Ricky went, I've never seen anyone so big-headed and arrogant since thingummy went (I've forgotten his name! The one that desperately wanted to get to Blackpool). I just wish he'd gone the previous week so Tuffers didn't have to.
I was not excited by any of the dances. I did not think that Ricky deserved a 10 by Alesha, but I felt that most people were judged fairly. It was a bit dull. The best dance was Ali's. I agree that Ricky did not deserve a 10 - to me that shows up her lack of judgement.

Well, I think you'd enjoy it. I was older than 24 when I read it and quite jaded, but I still liked it!

That was kind of a strange episode. I enjoyed it (if enjoyed is the right word, it was rather nasty) as it was the lovely David for an hour, and that can never be bad, but...
I spent most of the ep thinking "rescue them, you callous
", but then when he did I thought "you really shouldn't have done that". It was interesting the way the Doctor became arrogant and decided to rewrite the laws of time so he could do what he wanted, the inference being that it happened because he had no-one to stop him (ie no Donna). But would Donna or another companion have stopped him? They might have done so, but Donna wanted to save Pompeii...
It was pretty powerful at the end, when Brooke shot herself and the Doctor realised what he'd done. Some fine acting from David as usual. But the other two crew are still loose in the world, which will no doubt muck up the whole space/time continuum...
I can't wait to see Donna, she's my favourite companion ever, but I just hope it doesn't result in her death. I was upset enough when she left.

It's bugging me that no-one has actually told Natasha that Nathan was blackmailing Leyla. But then she probably wouldn't believe it of her darling son.
I really wish they'd get rid of him as I can't bear to look at his horrible smirking face much longer. An accident whilst some sheep castrating was happening would be acceptable.
Edit: I've just got round to reading your signature and only just realised you're Gyre!! Doh.

I think that was the wrong decision and Ricky should have gone tonight, not Phil. I really felt for Layla but I think she should not have danced (like Jade was told not too). I really like Jade so I hope this isn't the end of Strictly for her. I wasn't really blown away by anyone tonight...but Chris's dance made me cringe
I agree with all of that! I didn't want Phil to go, he was charming and did a really good dance too. Ricky isn't half as good as he thinks he is.
Laila was lucky that she got the sympathy vote; it could have gone either way. It was a risky decision to dance - she should have stayed out like Jade. I wonder if the show's producers put pressure on her to take part?
I didn't think I would miss Brucie, but actually I did! And I want to know how much of my TV licence money was paid to
Ronnie Corbett to nearly fall down the stairs and tell a couple of ancient jokes.
Tess was slightly stilted, but I do like her and Claudia.

Yeah, Sally really gives me the creeps! She's pretty clever the way she's going about things too - she always looks as though butter wouldn't melt. I hope she gets found out soon.
-
Well, Nathan getting a well-deserved knee to the nadgers wasn't quite as enjoyable as I expected, due to the poor execution (Nathan was doubled up slightly before Leyla's knee connected!). It was still good though!!
Poor old Laurel. That was rather nasty. She must not have any sense of smell though not to smell the smoke coming from the curtains. And Sally on the swings, looking at one point like she was going to have an attack of conscience and then she didn't. And having the presence to mind to unlock the door again so it didn't look suspicious... The sooner she's sorted out the better.
-
It's a very long time since I read this, but I remember really enjoying it and lending it to my mum. She couldn't get into it at all!
-
Sally gives me the creeps. When she was standing watching Laurel burn - how could you do that to someone? It has obviously given her ideas... And surely Marlon noticed she was just standing there when he came running up? Why isn't he suspicious?
I thought it was a bit daft of the Barton's to put the Wylde's faces on their bonfire dummies and then invite them to the party!! Way to get evicted, dimwits...
Gyre, stand by later this week to see Nathan get his come-uppance - I can't wait!!
-
Yay! Craig finally went - about time! I didn't mind Alesha's comments because they were deserved, he was rubbish. I was annoyed too that Zoe went and he remained the week before. He was so big-headed though, he really thought he was good. He's in today's paper bleating about his marks.
Ali's dance was beautiful.
I'm not really sure why they went to Blackpool halfway through the series, why didn't they wait until the final? It would have made it more special.

Maybe I will try that. Then next year, I could probably afford to buy four books a month in mass market paperback with amazon's 4 for the price of 3 deal. I can have will-power. I can, I can!
Which book should I read first?
The Discworld books also seem to appear in Waterstone's "3 for 2" offer fairly regularly (which slightly irks me now I can't take advantage of it as I have them all apart from whichever is the newest hardback of the moment!).
I agree that you should start with the first book.

The Go Compare adverts, I am sure they could use them as some manner of torture!
I can't stand them either, I lunge for the mute button when they come on.
Along with any advert for selling gold...Oh yes... "I got

And as always, the public vote was disastrous. Neither couples deserved to be in the bottom two. Tough choice for the judges, but I felt they made the right decision.
Yep, you said it. Another travesty.
Why do I put myself through watching this?!! I preferred Ali, I think she is great, but neither her nor Zoe should have been in the dance-off. Weren't the viewers watching Craig, Chris etc? I think poor Ali's foot was really hurting her too - I noticed she did the dance-off in bare feet, bless her.
-
Don't get me started again on Nathan. Ugh.
Looks like what I said at the beginning of the month is coming true.
I feel sorry for Leyla, but at the same time she is so idiotic and brings a lot of it on herself. Why on earth did she sleep with him? Good grief.
And why exactly did she blame her shoes?!
I'm sick of Charity already and wish she would leave again. If she rolls her eyes up to the sky and sighs one more time I think I'm going to throw something at the TV. Someone should tell her that is not "acting".
-
Kylie, I agree. I find that flashforward really irritating. Plus, although the kid's dad (forgot his name) didn't see Dr B in his flashback, he heard her voice so surely he would recognise her from it? Unless he's dense.
I thought Ep 3 (with the Nazi) was a bit dull, but the last ep was good (although I hated the beginning with the bus nastiness set to Bjork). I'm feeling sorry for the babysitter too now - what on earth is going to happen with her to make her "deserve" her fate?
Good ending, too.

I's a shame you're not watching It Takes Two, as I think this years ITT has been much better than the last couple of years.
Do they still have Len's masterclass where he's teaching Claudia to dance? That was always my favourite - hilarious!
On to tonight's result - very glad it went the way it did. About time too! My favourite tonight was Ali.
I also forgot to say last time that Ola is another of my favourite professionals. Does anyone know how her name is pronounced? Some say it "Ol-la" and some say "Oh-la", and it bugs me (it must bug her too that they can't get her name right).
-
I bought the complete DVD months ago, but haven't had chance to watch them yet. I think I didn't become aware of it until series 2 was showing on C4, so I probably haven't seen series 1 before.
-
I can't seem to get as involved in this series. It's probably not helped by the fact I don't know who half the 'celebs' actually are.
I feel exactly the same way.
Last time, I was avidly watching It Takes Two, but I don't bother now.
I really like Kristina as a female pro - again, she has been lumbered with bad partners so we don't really get to see her full potential.I don't like her! I agree she has been lumbered with bad dancers, but she comes across as hard as nails and I just don't like her.
My favourite pro dancers would be Flavia and Lilia, and Darren and Vincent.
-
I'm glad some other people agree with me about Anton's jive and Flavia's costumes!
And I think I forgot to mention that I like Ali in my last post - I know that there was someone else I liked but I couldn't remember her name!

I'm so pleased that Joe Calzaghe has finally gone! Brilliant!
The guy was a useless dancer and had no personality (apart from being an arrogant
, who thought that just because he's very good at boxing, then he's automatically going to be very good at dancing. I think he was surprised to find out that he wasn't).
I think Ricky (Whittle), Zoe and Laila are among the best dancers. I love Phil Tuffnell too, he gives such a charming performance and I always have a big grin on my face watching him.
That whole thing with the "personal comments" annoyed me. I didn't think Craig was being personal, he was just saying after Bruno's remark that they were jumping around like a grasshopper, that they were more skippy than that, ie like a kangaroo. Craig gets told off by Bruce for that, and yet in the next dance Len called Natalie "Hopalong Cassidy"!! Now that's a personal comment, and yet nothing was said!
I might be a bit controversial here, but I don't think Anton is that good a dancer himself! Yes, he is excellent at ballroom, but his Latin isn't so good and his jive was terrible.
Vincent and Flavia are my favourite couple, and I adored their dance. A tango waltz? Does that even exist or have they made it up themselves? Either way, it was brilliant, I was entranced.
Speaking of Flavia, who is choosing her costumes this year? They have all been absolutely hideous - that drab grey dress last week and that awful jive outfit this week.

Yay! That was the best possible result from my point of view - Natalie in the dance off with a stronger dancer, so we could definitely get rid of her. Sorry Chesil, but I couldn't stand Natalie Cassidy. She tried hard, but was not a good dancer, very heavy on her feet, stiff and often lumbering and clumsy. I did feel sorry for Vincent though, having to go. (But not as sorry as when he was robbed of the title when dancing with Rachel Stevens.
) Anyway, I digress...
I really enjoyed all the Charleston dances, and hated both the rock and roll ones! The Charlestons were great. For sheer entertainment I loved Chris and Ola's - I had a great big smile on my face from start to finish. I thought they were all good though.
I didn't like the idea of the group Viennese Waltz though. It may be how things are done in proper competitions, but I really don't see how the judges can properly judge when everyone is dancing at once, they are bound to miss things. And surely people who have already done a Viennese had an advantage over the others who hadn't? Or had they all done one previously?
I loved the dramatic dance with the two professional couples dressed in black. Does anyone know the song they were dancing to? I'd Google it, but I can't get Google on my computer now for some reason.
Great show!
