  1. 33. All The Light We Cannot See - Anthony Doerr - 9/10 ....This was a very good book. I enjoyed it more than The Girl on The Train. Possibly, some of us "older" folks may enjoy All The Light We Cannot See more so than the younger people, but then, maybe not. There was a lot of reality of WWII in the book. 32. The Sweetness At The Bottom of the Pie - Alan Bradley - 8/10 - I have given the first 4 books in the Flavia series a 8/10 rating now. All 4 were very enjoyable and I will continue on with the remaining 4 in the series. hopefully, my next read will be Finders Keepers by Stephen King. I am #1 on the hold list at the library. But, I am also #1 on the hold list for Nightingale.
  2. Thieves in the Temple - Prince
  3. I received an email from my niece today. She sent me a photo that they took last evening of a bear cub that came out of the woods and was drinking all the nectar from their hummingbird feeder. After drinking all the liquid from the hummingbird feeder it went over to the regular bird feeders. My niece's husband then went outside and chased the bear cub away.
  4. Sharks are the topic at the beaches in North Carolina. There have been 8 shark attacks on people recently. A few people have lost arms and others have also been seriously bitten. Some of the attacks are occurring in water knee deep. These attacks are occurring at beaches that have large crowds for the most part.
  5. I am not quite sure what you mean by that. I also really liked "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Thursday Next Series by Jasper Fforde, the Kazam series featuring Jennifer Strange by Fforde, and the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley (btw, I don't recall having read the Chris Bohjalian book). Those are all a small part of my reading but I do enjoy the authors very much.
  6. The Lady Is A Tramp - Frank Sinatra (he would be 100 years old this year)
  7. I hadn't thought much about it. Now you have me thinking. Sounds good to me.
  8. Wow! England beats Germany 1 - 0. WooHoo.
  9. Almost exclusively on kindle. I am so fortunate to have a library that stocks most all books that I want to read in the kindle format. Example: the library has all 8 of the Alan Bradley books of Flavia de Luce series in kindle format.
  10. I heartily recommend The Hundred Year Old Man, it was good reading. I am No. 2 on the hold list at the library for Nightingale. I hope I can get through All The light before Nightingale becomes available. Glad to hear that you like Nightingale as my wife also highly recommended it to me.
  11. All I Have to Do Is Dream - Everly Brothers (listened to 2 of their albums while I walked on the treadmill this morning)
  12. I finished reading The Sweetness At The Bottom of the Pie. I rate it a 8/10 which is the same rating I give books 2,3, and 4 in the Flavia de Luce series. All 4 books have been enjoyable reading. I am so happy that peacefield recommended this series to me. I am starting to read All The Light You Cannot See. My wife gives it a good rating.
  13. A snippet from Alan Bradley: Can you tell us a bit more about the TV series that will be based on the books? The TV series is still in the formative stages. It is being produced by Sam Mendes’ (of American Beauty and Skyfall fame) Neal Street Productions. I understand that each episode will cover one of the Flavia books. The TV scripts are being written by Harriet Warner, who has written several episodes of Call the Midwife, one of the most successful series in BBC history. It’s incredibly exciting to be part of all this; so very different from tinkering in a sweltering studio with the guts of a reluctant television camera! Does everything you know about Flavia actually make it into a book, or are there more secrets she has that only you know? Flavia is always taking me by surprise. I quite often don’t know what she’s going to do until she does it, and I’m constantly aware that she does things that would never, ever, have occurred to me. I have also begun to suspect that she keeps things from me: things that are too much, perhaps, for my delicate ears. 14. Tough way for a game to be decided. I thought England outplayed Japan, especially in the second half. England should be proud of their play in the World Cup.
  15. Did any of you see the replay of the "head" collision between the U.S. player and the Germany player. It was terrible and both coaches should not have left their players re-enter the game. The German player had blood running down her face. It is all over the news in the U.S. and I agree with the comments that they should have been kept out for the remainder of the game at least as it could have been very dangerous.
  16. Blue Moon of Kentucky - Bill Monroe (Patsy Cline also has a nice version)
  17. A Gourmet vegetarian pizza. Afterwards I had a small piece of 85% dark chocolate.
  18. And they can't lose to Germany in the finals either. It was a great game between the U.S. and Germany and I can't be happier with the outcome. I hope England beats Japan tomorrow and sets up a U.S. vs England final.
  19. Let me add my congratulations on the Production Manager's job. Kudos to you. Where do you find all the time. How many of the Flavia books have you actually read. She is such a delightful girl. Love her battles/retaliation with the sisters.
  20. Do you mostly read hardcovers or kindle.
  21. I have never read a "Shakespeare". I wonder if I would enjoy his writing. Is there a book that you would recommend to start (for my TBR list).
  22. Little Hotel Room - Ray Charles (we don't have butterflies again for the second year - it is sad - I planted butterfly weed, butterfly bush, zinnia, cone flower, lantana, penta and still no butterfly)
  23. Noise bothers me when I am reading. I prefer little background noise although I can read outside on the porch and not have any problem with the noises from nature. Last night I read out on the screened porch until 9:00 pm. That is another advantage of the kindle....reading in the dark.
