I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Marvin Gaye -
I started reading The Girl In The Spider's Web (Lisbeth Salander Novel). So far, so good.
-
The book is supposed to be based on the author's grandmother and is factual. I think you will like the book.

This is a book that you may like. I read it about 3 years ago and recall that it was enjoyable. Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden In the summer of 1916, Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood, close friends from childhood and graduates of Smith College, left home in Auburn, New York, for the wilds of northwestern Colorado. Bored by their soci-ety luncheons, charity work, and the effete young men who courted them, they learned that two teach-ing jobs were available in a remote mountaintop schoolhouse and applied—shocking their families and friends. “No young lady in our town,” Dorothy later commented, “had ever been hired by anybody.” They took the new railroad over the Continental Divide and made their way by spring wagon to the tiny settlement of Elkhead, where they lived with a family of homesteaders. They rode several miles to school each day on horseback, sometimes in blinding blizzards. Their students walked or skied on barrel staves, in tattered clothes and shoes tied together with string. The man who had lured them out west was Ferry Carpenter, a witty, idealistic, and occasionally outrageous young lawyer and cattle rancher. He had promised them the adventure of a lifetime and the most modern schoolhouse in Routt County; he hadn’t let on that the teachers would be considered dazzling prospective brides for the locals. That year transformed the children, their families, and the undaunted teachers themselves. Dorothy and Rosamond learned how to handle unruly children who had never heard the Pledge of Allegiance and thought Ferry Carpenter was the president of the United States; they adeptly deflected the amorous advances of hopeful cowboys; and they saw one of their closest friends violently kidnapped by two coal miners. Carpenter’s marital scheme turned out to be more successful than even he had hoped and had a surprising twist some forty years later.

41 - As Chimney Sweepers Come to Dust – Alan Bradley – 7.5/10 ….I enjoyed the 7th book of the Flavia de Luce series very much, but, not as well as the previous 6 books. 40 - Cities of the Plain (book 3 of the Border trilogy – Cormac McCarthy – 9/10…this was a re-read. 39 - The Crossing (book2 of the Border trilogy) – Cormac McCarthy – 10/10…this was a re-read and I enjoyed the book as much as the original read many years ago. Cormac McCarthy remains one of my favorite authors.

Hmmm, The Devils Back sounds like a book I would enjoy. I am putting it on my "soon" TBR list. btw, how close do you live to Mammoth Cave? (For those that don't know, Mammoth Cave is the largest cave, by far, in the world. It consists of over 400 miles of caves). Edit : I found on Amazon that a sample of the first 400 "kindle" pages of The Devil's Back can be downloaded free. I have done so and will start reading it soon.

I read 4 of the books on your TBR list and recommend all 4. One Thousand White Women - Jim Fergus (this was a wonderful read for me) From Amazon - One Thousand White Women is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time. Shades of Grey - Jasper Fforde (Jasper Fforde, what else do I need say - it is a good read and I am anxiously waiting for the next in this new series) The Eye of Zoltar (Chronicles of Kazam book 3) - Jasper Fforde (since you have read the first two I don't really have to recommend the third book to you) The Girl on the Train - Paula Hawkins ( this book was on the best seller list for a long, long, time - and still is - I enjoyed the book)

Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley

Again, thanks a bundle for the recommendation. I laughed and laughed in "As The Chimney Sweeper Comes to Dust". There is one part where they are playing music like Shrimp Boats Are A Comin', Mocking Bird Hill, On Top of Old Smokey, and Aba Daba Honeymoon. Songs that most if not all on the forum have never heard but I remember well. -
Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley

Glad that you enjoy Alan Bradley's writing. Every book in the series has been great. I am currently reading "As The Chimney Sweeper Comes to Dust" (book 7) and it just may be the best of all but I am only about 25% into the book at this point. Book 7 takes place in Canada and so far doesn't have all the characters in the book that were in the previous six books. I find it hard to put the book down as it keeps my interest. I will find it difficult waiting for his next book to come out. -

38. All The Pretty Horses - Cormac McCarthy - 10/10 - This was a re-read for me but the first read was many years ago. I am glad that I chose this book for a re-read. Cormac ranks, probably, in the top 5 of my favorite authors. He is up there with Steinbeck, Dickens, and Hemingway. All The Pretty Horses has some violence in parts of the book and it may not be a book for some, but the prose is astounding and the story gets better the further you get in the book, as a matter of fact the last 25% of the book is a great , great, read. I enjoyed this re-read so much that my next book will be The Crossing, #2 in this Trilogy by McCarthy. 37. The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches: A Flavia de Luce Novel - Alan Bradley - 8/10 This was book #6 in the Flavia series. it concentrated on Harriet (Flavia's mother). The ending sets the series up for possibly a new direction? 36. Finders Keepers – Stephen King – 8.5/10 – good read, although it took me awhile to realize how the book tied into Mr. Mercedes. Once I realized the connection I started to enjoy it more. As usual, the very ending of the book made the hair on my arms stand-on-end. J I am looking forward to the 3rd book in the trilogy as I suspect it will really be a hair raiser. Brady is a scary character. He reminds me of a "clown". 35. The Nightingale - Kristin Hannah - 9/10 - What a great read. It is one of the top war books that I have read. The 2 sisters in the book will take you on quite a ride. 34. Speaking From Among The Bones - Alan Bradley 8/10 -good read as usual. This is an interesting series. 33. All The Light We Cannot See - Anthony Doerr – 8.5/10 ....This was a very good book. I enjoyed it more than The Girl on The Train. There was a lot of reality of WWII in the book. 32. The Sweetness At The Bottom of the Pie - Alan Bradley - 8/10 - I have given the first 5 books in the Flavia series a 8/10 rating now. All 4 were very enjoyable and I will continue on with the remaining 4 in the series.

Long Black Veil - Lefty Frizzell Wow!! Those Cone flowers are beautiful. my Cone flowers are planted near a group of trees and aren't growing well due to all the tree roots. Also, that isn't a Cone flower in my Avatar. It is a Zinnia. I took a bunch of photos trying to catch the Butterflies with their wings open but didn't have too much luck. -

Go Set A Watchman is #1 on the National best seller list in the U.S. It is also ranked #1 locally here in Greensboro, NC. -
Thanks Athena. The AAU Junior Olympics is a big thing here in the U.S. My great grandson is really nervous and hopes he doesn't finish last in the field of 70 contestants that have qualified for the 1500 meter event. Some of the contestants train 6 - 7 days a week but my granddaughter doesn't want to push her son hard and he only trains 2 - 3 days a week. She thinks he has the talent to really become good when he gets older.I will be able to watch the event live through "Live Streaming" or I can subscribe to AAUTV for a single day for only $2.99. http://www.hamptonroadssports.org/page/aau-junior-olympic-games-2015/

My 7 year old great grandson has qualified in Track and Field for the AAU Junior Olympics. He will be running in the Junior Olympics this coming Thursday at Norfolk State University. His qualifying time was 6 minutes and (13 seconds?) for the 1500 meters. http://aautv.org/
