  1. I've just done one for my decades challenge too! I have to say that if it wasn't for the 1001 one done by Arukyomi I'd have struggled with the formulae more than I did!
  2. Me again! Because I'm sad I've made a spreadsheet based on the list of all countries that I linked earlier, with the bit where you can mark off which ones you've read and it works out a percentage for you! I'd be happy to upload it for you if you'd like a copy, but I won't be offended if you don't. It's just that as well as liking lists, I like spreadsheets that work out percentages!
  3. How rude - I didn't notice your post above Ben's, Charm. Sorry! If you go for it, I hope you enjoy it.
  4. According to IMDB, there are no plans to release it in the US.
  5. I don't suppose I'd have picked it up if it hadn't been a choice for my book group, but I'm so glad I did.
  6. Thanks Ben. I'm sure you won't regret pushing it up the pile!
  7. Try not to think too much about it! Nice to see you.
  8. That's one of the things I'm enjoying about it - each time I 'do' a country, I look it up and read all about it! And it's definitely not cheating to backdate... because I've decided it isn't! ETA: Can I ask what county(ies) on the side of South America is that you've completed? I've looked at your map but can't decide and our huge world map decided to fall off the wall last week and we haven't put it back up yet!
  9. No worries - you're welcome.
  10. Excellent! What country list did you go for? I'm going to use the one on this site, although I think 'Akrotiri' might prove impossible!
  11. That's a shame, Kylie. I hope you manage to get it soon. Oh do, Nollaig - it's so good! Apparently It's coming to UK cinemas on 12 March (the Swedish one, with English subtitles). I shall definitely see it! I'm sceptical about the 'Hollywood' remake because of stuff I've read online about the adaptation (like "we might set it in Canada instead of Sweden... ) but I gather from a friend that the Swedish version is very true to the book.
  12. The map is rather lovely, isn't it?! I don't think that's cheating, Kylie. I've deviated from the original 'Olympic' challenge to make it a 'World' one and I haven't set any time limit - unlike the original one which was to be completed in four years. I added The Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder yesterday, even though I read it in 2007 because I remembered he'd been born in Norway. Unless it's part of a challenge that others are completing in as a competition then I don't think it matters. I need to update my list at the front, actually, as there are more 'World' countries than Olympic ones (gulp!). Lists ftw!
  13. I think you need to take this to a specialist antique book shop, or maybe to an auction house for advice. I wouldn't try peeling any labels off, no matter how tempting! ETA: There are some of this title on Amazon.
  14. Yes, that Wiki link is invaluable and I browse it quite often, although I'm still struggling to decide what to read for some of my missing 'fiction' decades. I'm enjoying this challenge more than the other one, because I'm very likely to get to the end of it - even if it takes me another two years! I'm going to try to make a big effort with it this year!
  15. I've read lots of UK books - I don't know why I haven't selected one for the list! I shall add my next UK read! I am intending to include some children's books in my choices (my Indian choice was one) - I'm doing this based on where the author was born rather than it being where the book is set. I don't see myself ever completing it, but it's another list and I like lists - and it makes me think about things I might not otherwise read - or at least, that's the plan.
  16. I finished this book this morning. What a cracking start to my 2010 reading! I've posted some thoughts in my blog.
  17. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson The
  18. No, that's useful because it's what I was coming around to thinking about Greenland myself after Googling (I don't know why I didn't think of Wiki - I look at that site at least 244,715,841 times a day usually ). Thanks for the list of Icelandic authors - the problem is finding one who is a) translated into English, and enjoyable! Still I have about 240 other countries to do as well, so there's no rush! Cheers, Chrissy.
  19. 'Wossy' to leave BBC when his current contract ends. He can be a bit of a prat at times but I don't actually mind him!
  20. Does anyone have any suggestions for authors from Greenland and/or Iceland? Thanks in advance.
  21. Sowwy! So, what are you actually reading at the moment, Beth?
  22. Well, 2010 has got off to an absolutely cracking start with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson, which I absolutely loved! This also counts as Sweden for my 'world' challenge.
  23. 13 countries (5%) Afghanistan - A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini - 10/10 Austria - The Dragonfly Pool - Eva Ibbotson - 7/10 Brazil - The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho - 8/10 Canada - No Time for Goodbye - Linwood Barclay - 8/10 Germany - All Quiet on the Western Front - Erich Maria Remarque - 9/10 India - Coram Boy - Jamila Gavin - 6/10 Ireland - The Sea - John Banville - 3/10 New Zealand - Mister Pip - Lloyd Jones - 9/10 Norway - The Christmas Mystery - Jostein Gaarder - 7/10 Pakistan - The Reluctant Fundamentalist - Mohsin Hamid - 8/10 Sri Lanka - The Flower Boy - Karen Roberts - 8/10 Sweden - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson - 10/10 United States - The Notebook - Nicholas Sparks - 7/10
  24. Oh no worries - and no hard feelings. I must confess I hadn't appreciated that you'd had a loss or I probably wouldn't have posted on your profile anyway so apologies from me if I came across as insensitive. :) ETA: I've 'undeleted' - hope that's okay?

  25. Nathaniel Parker! I don't suppose I'll watch it (I didn't watch R&J) but I'll be interested to see what books they choose.
