  1. This one is ace - thanks to Ruth for recommending it. Literature-Map What is Literature-Map? Literature-Map - the tourist map of literature. If you like a particular author, and would like to try new, similar authors, this is the place for you. Simply enter the name of your favourite author in the box, hit continue and it will give a web-like map of similar authors - the closer in style, the closer to the centre. Simples!
  2. It’s coming to that time of year when we think about opening new threads for our 2010 reading. With this in mind, please can you post in here when you do, with a link to your 2009 thread, in order for the old threads to be closed. It would be useful if you could specify 2010 in the title of your new thread. Of course, some people prefer not to start a new thread but to carry on with their existing one, and that is fine too. Thanks in advance. ETA: Obviously, if you're a Mod/Admin then you can sort your own out.
  3. Note for future reference - Girls Of Riyadh by Rajaa Alsanea - Saudi Arabia
  4. This sounds good, Kelly, and as I'm painfully slowly doing the Olympic/World challenge, I will make a note of this for future reference!
  5. I saw in your thread. That's always good news :D Glad you had a good day. x

  6. Belated happy birthday - I hope you had a good day. :)

  7. A good haul there. I will get the Chris Evans one when it's out in paperback.
  8. I missed your birthday - so sorry. Hope you had a lovely day. :)

  9. Hi Dan. I perhaps should look out for Invasion of the Body Snatchers then. I didn't realise there was a 'sequel' to DotT. I tend to avoid sequels written by different authors, but again, perhaps I'll check this one out. Thanks.
  10. Hmm, not sure - he doesn't really go in for forums! He doesn't know what he's missing! Thanks, Maureen - I've been on Fantastic Fiction to get the order of the books so I don't make the same mistake as I did with the Kathy Reichs book I bought.
  11. I finished The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman this afternoon. 8/10 I'm about to start A Christmas Carol and Other Christmas Writings by Charles Dickens. I've read A Christmas Carol before, but none of the other Christmas stories.
  12. Thanks, Chrissy - I hope so too! He's not the fastest of readers but I'll make sure to ask him what he thinks when he gets round to them.
  13. I've just finished this - it took me quite some time though, not because I wasn't enjoying it but just because I've been so busy. Because it took me so long, it felt rather disjointed. I'm still confused as to why
  14. Well, armed with all the recommendations here, I went to the Bookbarn and came away with Gallow's View by Peter Robinson and Post-mortem by Patricia Cornwell. Both look brand-new, so I'm going to wrap them up for hubby for Christmas (I'll tell him I got them second-hand - he won't care. ). Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I've kept the list in my bag and might find some others on my travels.
  15. Wow, that's a great site Ruth - thanks.

Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Saaaaarah, Happy birthday to you! :friends0:

  17. I've not heard of this book or author. I've just looked on Fantastic Fiction and I see that she's written loads. Have you read any of the others? Are you enjoying this one? Welcome to BCF, btw.
  18. I've read A Christmas Carol - and am planning on re-reading it next, along with some of his other Christmas stories which I have never read. It's definitely a must for December - one of my favourite stories ever.
  19. I really want to read Voltaire's Candide - and another one he wrote about London, the name of which escapes me now. I found a copy of Candide in a charity shop a few weeks ago, but when I checked, some of the pages were missing from the middle! I love the name Mathilde.
  20. This is being shown in the UK on BBC1 tomorrow, Sunday 6 December at 9pm, with the concluding part next Sunday at 9pm.
  21. I was with you (not that we watched as much as we have in previous series) - I loved Justin and Colin. I was gutted when Colin left. I was glad Gino won once Justin couldn't.
  22. Oooh thanks - I'll check them out. I forgot to put Harlan Coben on the list - I shall go and amend.
  23. I really enjoyed these titles.
  24. My husband has only recently got into reading, and his choices so far are fairly narrow. I'd like to find a new author, but along the same lines as those he's already read and enjoyed. He's read: Jeff Abbott Geoffrey Archer (no, not that one!) Harlan Coben Robert Crais Michael Crichton Tess Gerritsen I bought him a Kathy Reichs to try, but apparently it's a 'later' one, and also not a good one to start with as it's 'different' from her usual style. So any recommendations along those lines would be great (and also whether I need a certain book to start). Thanks in advance.
  25. For me, it would have to be The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham. For a start, sci-fi is really *not* my thing and also I read it at school and it left no impression on me (although I knew the basic premise) so it came as a complete surprise to me just how much I loved it.
