  1. I'm quite embarrassed that I'd never heard of him before I got this book! He's written quite a few others - have you read any of those?
  2. Thanks for the suggestions. I will check them out. I'm sure to find the Attenborough one at the Bookbarn - there are usually lots of the 'BBC tie-in books' there (like about 1,000 secondhand copies of Palin's Pole to Pole ).
  3. Thanks. I would definitely like to read some more of his. I've added that to my humongous Amazon wishlist.
  4. 1950s Non-fiction - 1958 - A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush by Eric Newby - 7/10 14 books read = 42.42% 14 books read 16 to go
  5. I finished it this afternoon and really enjoyed it. Review here.

  7. I'd like to read that but I have soooo many unread books. Hmmmm.
  8. I can't make up my mind if I think it's better or not, but it's equally as good if not!
  9. No worries. Happy reading, whatever you choose.
  10. I've just Googled that poem and it's lovely. You might like John Clare. He was a 'peasant poet' and had a fairly troubled life - he wrote many poems about nature. I studied him for A level recently as a mature student and would suggest This collection as a good place to start. (It's cheap too!). ETA: Hmm- there aren't many dark ones in that collection though - until you get to the ones he wrote about himself and his past when he was in the asylum towards the end of his life - so they might not be to your taste. You can read lots of his poems online here to get an idea
  11. Ooh, that looks like a good challenge, Kate. Good luck.
  12. I loved The Kite Runner too. Have you read A Thousand Splendid Suns?
  13. I'm sure you won't regret it, Kylie. I shall look forward to hearing what you think of it.
  14. Sorry - I linked it incorrectly. The one below should do the trick. http://www.sendspace.com/file/4n4b5v
  15. I wouldn't buy the green Penguins - the paper and print are awful. My classics of choice are the better quality Penguin Classics (even though they're a bit pricey - the quality is great). The cloth-bound hardbacks on this site are gorgeous!
  16. For anyone who likes Spreadsheets, here's the Rory List in Excel! It's not in alphabetical order, I'm afraid. If books are added then it's easy to change the formulae at the top - just let me know and I'll post how to do it.
  17. Thanks Ches. I thought I'd done that too, but I obviously forgot!
  18. If it doesn't work, let me know and I'll send a copy to you.
  19. You can do that if you select 'file' (under the Google icon), then download as... then select 'text' then when the box asks you how you want to open it, you can browse and select 'Word'. I also have a spreadsheet version of it where you can mark off the books read and work out the percentage done if anyone wants it uploaded - I did it last week when it was discussed somewhere but have decided I have enough challenges at the moment without adding another 250 books to the list!
  20. Your map is looking good. I must put Lolita further up the reading pile so I can colour a big bit in red!
  21. Stilton soup (just need to add the Stilton to it) and crusty rolls. Yum!
  22. Hehe - thanks!
  23. My hubby does nearly all his reading in the bath! I seldom do as I'm frightened of dropping my book in the water because I'm such a klutz!
  24. I like the idea of a splashproof book! Shame it was a bit of a let down. I read Pride and Prejudice for the first time last year* (and immediately watched the BBC version for the first time) and although I found it quite difficult to get into, I simply loved it once I did! ETA: *Actually it was 2008!
