  9. Great review Katie and I have to agree with the points that you made. The ending felt very rushed and was not particularly realistic. Whilst I would not have liked a more realistic ending it would have been better for the story. I think that she touched upon several major issues in the book but didn't go in depth enough with them and it was the same for the characters. Celia was a major part of the story and we know barely anything about her. Rachels mum most have gone through hell in the 'missing' time but that was skipped through. It was still a good read but I feel it could have been so much more. Shame.
  10. Hello from Preston
  11. Onto my bookring from Supergran Helpless ~ Barbara Gowdy Celia is the struggling single mother of an exceptionally, angelically beautiful child: nine-year-old Rachel. All too aware of the precarious balance of the life she has built for the two of them, she worries about her daughter's longing for the father she has never met. When Rachel disappears one summer night during a blackout, Celia is stricken with guilt and terror about what her choices might now mean for her daughter's fate. The media coverage of the abduction is tremendous, running nationwide. Closely monitoring events is Ron, an appliance repairman who lives in the neighbourhood. Though Rachel is a stranger to him, he convinces himself that she is his responsibility. His feelings for her are at once tender, misguided and chillingly possessive. Tapping into the fears that lie just beneath the surface of modern urban life, HELPLESS is a haunting and provocative story of heart-stopping suspense.
  12. Eldest has taken me nearly 3 weeks on and off but I'm loving it. I have Brisingr to be read later on. I have to admit, they are a bit daunting in hardback and my wrist hurts after a while I'm up to the good bit now so I'm nearly finished
  13. Maybe Rosst just hasn't had the courage to come and say Hi yet! Not everyone is confident to jump straight in. For someone who hasn't heard of this one Rosst, what's it all about??
  14. I thought that when I saw it.... I had to talk myself out of it (twice)
  15. Just browsing (honest) in Waterstones today and noticed Ms Cole has a new book out! It's called The Business and in true Martina Cole style, it looks great. Imelda Dooley is scared. Really scared. She's played hard and fast and now she's been caught. She's pregnant and now she's on her own. Her father, not a man to mess with, will see that somebody pays for this. And it's not going to be her. So Imelda Dooley tells a lie. A lie that literally causes murders. When Mary Dooley's husband is killed in the night's events, she knows she must graft to keep the family afloat. And graft she does, becoming a name in her own right. But she still has to watch her daughter's life spiral into a vicious, hate-fuelled cycle of drugs and prostitution. Caught up in the carnage that is Imelda's existence are Mary's adored grandchildren, Jordanna and Kenny. Pretty little Jordanna isn't yet three and she already knows far too much. All she can do is look after her baby brother, Kenny, and try not to draw unwanted attention to herself. Set in the East End of London from the tail-end of the seventies up until the present-day, THE BUSINESS is a tale of drugs, prostitution and a young girl's fight for survival -- against all the odds.
  16. I am still reading the enormous tome that is Eldest ~ Christopher Paolini. I had almost forgotten how much I love his writing style (and I'm completely in love with Saphira) Darkness falls...Despair abounds...Evil reigns...Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now, Eragon must travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves, for further training in magic and swordsmanship, the vital skills of the Dragon Rider. It is the journey of a lifetime, filled with awe-inspiring new places and people, each day a fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and Eragon isn't sure whom he can trust. Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle back home in Carvahall - one that puts Eragon in even graver danger. Will the king's dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life...
