  1. Lucy, I believe the main choices are Amytriptyline, Topomax, and a beta-blocker. The first just made me sleepy, and gave me more tension headaches, the second caused horrendous vertigo, and I can't take the third because I have low blood pressure already (a beta-blocker is also a treatment for high blood pressure)!

However, a friend of mine manages to tolerate Topomax, and she hasn't had a migraine since she started it. So, everything is worth a try.

Other than that, have you tried Triptans?

  2. I read tons of the In Death books a while back, many in succession, and it was quite a while before the sameness compelled me to stop reading. Saying that however, I do intend to eventually catch up on the few I think I've missed.

  3. As I was sick, I managed to get some reading done, and finished The Kite Runner - it was a nicely written book, and I'm glad I've read it, but I got rather frustrated with the coincidences.

I'm now having trouble choosing what to read, so I'm dipping into King's 'Just After Sunset'.. some have been silly, but some really good. I may well be sinking into a horror phase!

  4. But as you can see, it works fine within a post.. I'm not sure if putting it in a sig automatically strips something out. I did wonder if the tag is disallowed, but others have used tickers before.

Hmm.. saying that, is it only Mods that I've seen with tickers? I'll go check some settings in a moment. (And I was going to bed 40 mins ago!)

Added: Ok, I worked out that it was a particular permission that was set differently for the Mods. It appears to work now.

  5. How many people get an aura? I don't usually, but I may have had a couple of weeks ago.. at first it was as if I'd stared at some bright lights, but it wasn't going away. Then it developed into a kinda semi circle of zig zag lines, which started flashing, then went off.

I did get a migraine after, but it was about 24 hours after, and not particularly severe, but I'm not sure if they were connected. I did find out, however, that it is possible to experience an aura without a migraine! It certainly is a strange condition.

(Or, maybe it was just my strange mind! lol)

  6. Book Two: Descent Into Chaos

A while ago I was sent the first Vampire Apocalypse book to review. I was looking forward to the second book, and I wasn’t disappointed.

To recap, the world is thrust into confusion due to a energy crisis, and it’s into this world that the vampires appear, after living in secret for years. These vampires are not the ones that have been found in recent novels, but are vicious killers.

In this second book, the vampires have split themselves into cabals, controlling certain areas of the US. There are both ancient and younger vampires, with their teams of thralls to keep control in the day light hours. Most humans have been captured, and under the influence of a serum, are being kept for food. A small group, however, are living in secret, and are fighting to free more - their latest plan is to cause confusion between two cabals, setting them up against each other.

As with the first book, this is a book about war, with the vampires adding an extra horror element. This makes for an action packed book, which doesn’t let up until the last page. Again, the human stories aren’t deeply explored, but there’s enough to add another layer of interest. The vampires are explored a little more than in the first book, and it is rather refreshing to find a return to the type of creature you would expect in as an ‘undead’.

Each book so far has wrapped up the particular story line it focuses on, but leaves it open for the next one.. I look forward to the next!

  7. They were an odd bunch, weren't they!? LOL I was quite happy to see Anita kicked out, I couldn't have watched her miserable face every week!

I don't like Mona (was that her name) who was supposed to be their leader - she was very quick to dump the other one in it, who called her colleagues 'puppets' - not to be trusted at all!

  8. Reviews are done for Doctor Mooze, The Wow Signal and The Forgotten Legion.

I'm getting a bit frustrated though, because my reviews seem to be getting worse instead of better - it's almost as if I sit down at the computer, and all my ideas disappear.. I'm finding it even harder than usual to express myself and my thoughts. :D

Anyway, a while ago I was sent Vampire Apocalypse: A World Torn Asunder by Derek Gunn, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, even though it's more of a "man's book". I'm now reading the sequel, Descent Into Chaos, and it's another good one. :)

I also picked up and started The Kite Runner yesterday.. I decided it was about time!

  9. This is an interesting thread, and I think that 'disturbing' has different meanings for different people. Those of you hoping to find something disturbing.. do you know what you're actually looking for? Something graphic, frightening, or just something that will make you think, or stay with you?

When it comes to being scared, The Amityville Horror and The Shining both did that for me when I was a teenager, but nothing has really done so since. I wasn't scared when reading The Shining recently, and the film of The Amityville Horror was so appalling, it's put me off forever!

(Added: Pet Sematary didn't particularly scare me when I read it, but the film left me feeling seriously disturbed!)

I did recently read E11even Terrible Months by R.L. Royle, after she kindly sent it to me to review - it wasn't scary in the traditional sense, but it did leave me feeling a little edgy.

Looking at disturbing in another sense, I used to read quite a few books by Richard Laymon. I picked one up a couple of years ago, and found myself quite disturbed by the amount of unnecessary gore and sex - there was just something about it that made me wonder what sort of guy could write like that.. and also disturbed me a little that I used to enjoy reading them!!

  10. I wasn't really sure what to put as the title.. I know that some of us feel that we have to be in a certain mood to appreciate certain books, but I was wondering if some books just need the right timing?

For example, I have been hearing good things about The Kite Runner for some time now, but it has never appealed to me. I even had it on my shelf for a while, then I gave it away, knowing I'd never get to it.

Today, however, I was looking at our second hand book table at work, and there was a copy.. and I just knew I had to get it, and read it. And sure enough, I've just started it whilst in the bath.

Has anyone else experienced anything like that.. or am I just odd?! :)

  11. Set in a time when Julius Caesar was still fighting for power, this book weaves together the story of three very different men. Tarquinius is a warrior and soothsayer, and Brennus the Gaul is a feared gladiator - both have seen their own races attacked by the Romans, and have lost people they loved.

Romulus is a slave, along with his twin sister Fabiola - he is sold to the gladiator school, and she is sold into prostitution.

The first part of the book tells all their stories, pulling the reader into the various aspects of Roman life.. all of which is described in a vivid way. As these three men find their destinies drawing them together, they end up fighting in a Legion that takes them far away from everything they know.

The actual storylines cover a long period of time, and yet they are fast paced, with plenty of action. It shows the differences between the lives of the various groups and classes of people living at that time, including some now famous names.

For me, the strength of this book lies in the characters, their stories, and the way their lives are bound together.. to such an extent that I was sad to leave them behind as I finished the book.

The paperback of The Forgotten Legion is published by Preface in April, and will be followed by the release of the second book in the series, The Silver Eagle. I would recommend it to all lovers of Historical Fiction, but in particular fans of Wilbur Smith

  12. Oh ok, sorry if I flew off the handle... not sure why *laughs* I guess I just get a bit annoyed at all those lists of books people "have to read" which are around...

Chimera, it's one of the things which annoys me too!

  13. You know, I should really tell you all off for going off topic, as it's not really the book being discussed any more. However, I'm more than a little frightened that if I do, Twilight will start to take over the entire forum (well, more than it is already!), so I think I'll let you all stay here together....! :haha:
