That UNIT commander was rather ruthless, ordering them to close the wormhole before everyone came back.
That seemed a bit silly to me.. she was completely in awe of The Doctor, but was willing to shut the wormhole, and trap him!!
I thought straight away that it will be The Master who will come back and "kill" the Doctor, because the psychic lady on the bus said something like "he knocks four times", and I just thought of the drum beat The Master used to tap on the table, which was four beats. But I'm probably completely wrong! You're not the only one who has thought that.

Ahsilet, in the case of these reading circles, "classic" has been used in the sense of a time period, rather than whether a book is classed a "classic" because of how great/influential etc it is viewed to be.
So forget a time limit and let the forum speak on this. If they don't like my idea, then erase it. But saying a certain time period should determine such a thing is ridiculous. We have a group in place already who have worked very hard on the reading circles, and they have made decisions after lots of thought and discussion.

Another person from Kent
Welcome!

ooh.. I wonder what the rest of the show will be like without Cutter in it?
-
I gave up rather quickly with Lisey's Story. Blaze I also liked.. it seemed very much ;mid career' King, if that makes sense? Duma Key is sitting on my shelf.

Bernard Cribbens should be great!
I can't say I was that impressed with tonight's special. Having watched EastEnders, I couldn't take Michelle Ryan and her posh accent seriously, and Lee Evans was a little too over the top for me too.
Still, an hour of DT - I can't complain!
Who's coming back through the dark? My guess is The Master.

I found this one much better once they were separated, but I'm afraid I always find it annoying when (
)a couple have sex just once, then she gets pregnant - I know it can happen, but it seems rather too convenient when in a story!
I was, however, glad that there wasn't a 'happy-ever-after' ending.
So, I can't say I enjoyed it as much as everyone else in this thread (sorry!), but I will eventually look out the next book in the series.

Considering there is a Twilight social group set up, do you think it could please be used for photos, discussion of the actors etc. I don't mind discussion about how the movie compares to the book, but the rest is better suited to the group. Thanks

I haven't finished yet, but what I've read so far has been brilliant, and I've had trouble putting the book down!
I thought the MMR section was very well done.. he doesn't try to tell you whether to have the jab or not, but simply outlines what happened, how it was SO badly reported, how research was ignored by the media etc - he explains so well everything that I try to tell parents.
I agree with Andy that the chapter about placebos is very enlightening.. I already knew some of it, but not all, and it will probably have an influence on the way I sometimes communicate with patients.
Throughout the book he also gives good information about what makes good research, and what to look out for.
For anyone interested in health stories, it's definitely a great read.

I noticed that Waterstones had some offers going as well.. I made myself walk past!
Sue, I will give The Birthing House a try at some point, but I am very disappointed with the reviews. That'll teach me to rely on covers and blurbs!
Andy, I read the first bit of Bad Science, then jumped straoght to the MMR section.. which I loved, and agreed with 100%! I'm now working through the rest.
-
Bad Science is great - thank you Andy for bringing it to my attention.
Today WHSmiths were evil, having a buy one get one free offer. I came out with:
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
The Birthing House
A Thousand Splendid Suns
all of which are trying to demand my attention at the same time!! lol
Added: I've just been adding these to LT and GoodReads, and The Birthing House has some terrible reviews.

Hmm.. I have such mixed thoughts of Noughts and Crosses.. as I said in it's thread, the first part of the book I actually found rather annoying. I felt as if I'd rather read a straightforward story about racism and segregation, or a fantasy story that took the themes, and came up with something different.. it was almost as if she was trying to be clever switching the colours around.
However, once they were separated, I did find myself rather pulled into the story, wanting to know what the outcome was.. and I'm glad it wasn't 'happy ever after'! Mind you, I do find it frustrating whenever
anyone gets pregnant after having sex just once! Yes, I know it is possible, but it does seem rather convenient for the story!
I'm reading Newes from the Dead.. it's ok, but rather lacking in depth so far.
Bad Science arrived today, so I will be tucking into that soon!

As per the posting guidelines, could you please provide a little more info about this book. Your own thoughts in particualr would be very welcome.

There's more about the book here, when it was chosen for our Reading Circle. Personally I struggled with the beginning, but very much enjoyed it once he was in his boat.
-
Does anyone else have any questions for Bronwen?
-
I hate to go against the trend, but I'm about 120ish pages in, and I'm not sure I like it. The author is obviously wanting to write about racism, but instead of taking the general ideas, and using them in some kind of alternative/fantasy setting, she's just turning the colours around. I know they're written for teens, and maybe that's causing the problem for me, but everything feels very obvious, and I do feel as if she's kinda 'bashing me over the head' with it.. so to speak.
I'm probably not explaining myself, and as I say, I'm sorry to see it differently from everyone else. I shall continue for a while longer.

Beth loves EastEnders, so I dip in and out of it, and I actually thought tonight's episode was really good. Ok, so it was over the top and depressing, but that's EastEnders for you!
So sad for Danielle and Ronny, more hatred to come for Janine, but thank goodness Archie got found out. I really hope he goes.. he annoys me SO much!
-
True.
Anyway, I shall be reporting back on the book.
-
Your reply seemed a little sarcastic, as if I was stating the obvious.
-
Sorry
I guess I'm trying to say that the blurb is misleading, as it's not the main point of the story.
-
It has some good reviews on amazon, so fingers crossed.
I read a tiny bit today, and I think the idea of her reviving again is just something to grab you when you read the blurb - the main story seems to be more about her life.
-
I've read most of Just After Sunset, but apart from that, I had no idea what to read next, despite having many books on my shelves! I wanderd into WHSmiths yesterday, and decided to see if anything caught my eye.
I saw Noughts and Crosses, and knowing that it's had some good reviews on here, I decided to give it a go. As well as that, whilst looking at a selection of books for children and teens, I found myself drawn to Newes from the Dead..
It is 1650 and a baby lies raw and cold, dead before it even drew breath. A young servant girl, terrified and alone, is accused of its murder and sent to the gallows. Protesting her innocence in the chill air of a December morning, Anne Green is hanged. Moments later her lifeless body is lifted down from the scaffold and carried to the College of Physicians for brutal dissection. But as Anne's corpse lies on the table and the doctors assemble, a strange rattle is heard in her throat. Against all the odds, could she still be alive?

I don't like Twilight!!!!!! (Just to clarify that early doors)
Phew - that's good to hear.. you can stay!

I guess you have to choose where to spend what free time you have: reading or online. Ya know?
Don't say that Katherine - they may all leave the forum!
I use both GoodReads and LT to keep a record of my books, plus my reviews and thoughts. I don't however, get involved in any of the groups on either site.. I tried for a little while, but didn't really get on with them.

It's fine, honest - when I get to it, I will approach with an open mind. I've been known to really like books which others dislike, and vice versa.
I've finished Slumdog Millionaire - I think I was expecting something a bit different, so it too me a while to adjust to the style. My main criticism is that there was too much happening to one person, which made it rather unbelieveable. However, by the end that didn't seem to matter, and my overall opinion was very positive.
It's been nice recently to be able to choose books that I feel like reading, rather than being tied to a pile of review books.
