  1. I gave up on the Book Thief not long after that post, Sazed! Sorry.
  2. Yes I had a notification that I'd been quoted in a post, which seems a bit pointless when I can see it on the forum in the relevant thread!
  3. Lovely today, wore a t-shirt for the first time this year and sat in the garden. Meant to be back in the teens tomorrow though.
  4. It's a lovely feeling isn't it, when you leave on Friday and know you've got the weekend ahead!
  5. I recently finished "To Catch a Rabbit" by Helen Cadbury, the first in a new crime series set in Doncaster (and a bit in York) and seen from the point of view of a Community Police Officer, Sean Denton, new to the job and finding that that the full police don't seem to like PCSOs (as they're called in the UK) very much. However he does befriend a couple of other PCSOs and civilian colleague, as well as Lizzie, a forensics investigator. His first case involves the death of a young woman, found in a caravan on farmland after an overdose, and initially she is catalogued as an accidental overdose. But Sean has his suspicions, and gradually a sad, sordid case of human trafficking, drugs and general exploitation is uncovered. I found it, not surprisingly, rather depressing, and these themes, although sadly topical, are becoming a bit over-used I think, but it's quite well-written and Sean is likeable, and some of his colleague are doing their best to try to help people, including another main character, Karen, who works for a Human Trafficking organisation, and who gets involved when her brother goes missing. A promising start to a new series, but I hope next time the author tackles a different subject matter. 7.5/10
  6. Yesterday I bought: Sleeper's Castle (at last!) - Barbara Erskine Well of the Winds - Denzil Meyrick A siege of Bitterns - Steve Burrows
  7. It's the same in this country with any work being done on paths, roads etc - for example there's been a sign at the top of my road saying that they'll be starting work on the pavements on 3rd April ie last Monday - have they started? Of course not! Most of the schools are on their Easter break now so the roads are quieter, so it would make sense to start works now....but no, they'll probably wait until the schools are open again and the traffic will be even worse than it normally is! Having said that, due to the schools being shut (although a few don't finish til today) the bus has been lovely and empty with a nice clear run to the station, and I've been getting to work pretty much on time this week
  8. Same here, lovely and sunny but still that cold wind. Meant to be really nice on Sunday, which probably means that Easter weather will be rubbish!
  9. No they're the original books, I didn't watch the series first time round back in the 1970s, but I started reading the books a few years ago, and have since seen a few episodes of the original, old series, and I watch the new one, and they are all based on the books. The author died several years ago and no one has carried on writing the books, thankfully!
  10. I've got the last few eps of Timeless stacked up, I hope it's re-commissioned too, it was fun. I'm also into Big Little Lies.
  11. Just bought: Sleeper's Castle by Barbara Erskine (at last!) A Siege of Bitterns by Steve Burrows Well of the Winds by Denzil Meyrick
  12. I'm just reading the introduction to "Enchanted April" before reading the book, I didn't realise it was so long but it gives a lot of background to the author's life, and she was certainly a colourful character. So quite interesting, although personally I'd rather it wold have been at the end of the book, then of course it wouldn't have been an introduction!
  13. Everybody wants to rule the world - Tears for Fears
  14. I like author interviews, and usually do read the extract from the next book. Notes are also helpful, although I don't bother now with the great long notes they put in the classics, as I'm not studying them I don't really feel the need to go into great detail, although if it's a brief introduction then I'll probably read it.
  15. Had quite a nice weekend overall, couple of brief showers on Saturday but yesterday was mainly sunny if a bit chilly out of the sun. This morning was really foggy first thing but now sunny again, although apparently it may turn cold again at the end of the week.
  16. Not many, obviously the 6th Game of Thrones book , but I've long given up waiting for that one! The new Charlaine Harris pb should be out soon (Night Shift), can't think of any others, it's not a genre I read a lot of.
  17. Quite nice today, bit of rain but nothing like the storms they predicted.
