Yes the pilot episode was superb, shame the later series tanked and it got more and more ridiculous, but still I kept watching!

I know what you mean! I'm sure you'll get used to him, perhaps he's one of those people who has a big breakfast, or a big dinner! As long as he's nice and you get along is the main thing.

Stand and Deliver - Adam and the Ants

It's the first episode I've watched all the way through, and I enjoyed it until it got about 2/3rds of the way along, and then I just started to get bored with it, not sure why really. But it looks like they're starting to build up to the regeneration now.

I agree about Lorna Doone, I did find some of the language a bit flowery and it took ages for the story to get going, although once it did I really enjoyed it. It also helped that I'd recently visited a lot of the places mentioned in the book, which gives it a great sense of "place".

Interesting comments - I haven't read this book, but did read a lot of Enid Blyton when I was a child, and loved the adventure side and sheer escapism, but with regard to the comments about women's expectations etc - that was the norm at the time the book was written, in fact when I was at primary school I can remember female teachers giving up their job if they got married! Sounds very odd now, but at the time we didn't think anything of it, as it was how things were. And people coming back to work after having a baby was virtually unknown!

We were given The Pearl to read as well, thankfully it wasn't a set book, as the blurb on the back put us all off reading it!

Cold Earth by Ann Cleeves - seventh book in the Shetland series, in which Jimmy Perez becomes obsessed after an unidentified woman is found dead in the ruin of a house after a landslide. At first it's assumed that she died in the incident, but the post mortem reveals that she was already dead when it happened, and then the police think they have found out who she is, only to discover she's using a false name, so they have a murder on their hands, and no way of finding the culprit until they find out who the woman was, and why she had suddenly come to Shetland. It seems that the locals have things to hide too, including the family who live near the ruined house, and other islanders also seem to have a connection with the stranger. I found this a solid read, very much a standard police procedural with a great setting and, finally, a bit of a romantic storyline for poor old Jimmy, who's been suffering lately! 7.5/10

It's hardly stopped raining apart from a brief gap yesterday morning, drizzling now and meant to rain tomorrow as well.

I still haven't read her previous 2 novels yet, they seem to publish her books quite quickly without the usual long wait between novels! I know they're not a series so it doesn't matter what order they're read in.

Yes same here, rained nearly all day. Better today but much cooler.

I'm a mood reader as well, and pretty much agree with Athena - I usually have 2 books on the go, my bedtime book and a commuting book (which is usually an easier read, and also easier to carry, big books are saved for the bedside so I don't have to cart them around), but my choice does depend on my mood; sometimes I might fancy a particular genre, or if I've just read something a bit more serious then maybe a short, light read eg cosy crime or a favourite series, will be next. And yes sometimes I'm spoilt for choice too and can't decide, in which case an old favourite is usually fished out. I do have a tbr list on Library thing, but don't stick to it that much although I do try to read one from that list sometimes. My new year reading resolution was to read one old, one new, and it's working a bit, but I'm also trying to read new books fairly quickly as well. I don't like to have a set challenge as such, as reading is meant to be for pleasure so I don't want it to become something I'm worrying over, as there are more important things to fret over than what book I'm going to read next!

Oh that is hot, and quite a drop back to 17. We were up to about 20 yesterday which was quite nice, it's a bit lower today but very muggy which isn't nice. I agree it seems to be either too hot, too cold or too wet, never a happy medium. Think we'll be in the late teens for a while, but with more rain.

Well they wanted rain and we've had loads of the stuff, hasn't stopped since last night. Wish I'd known as I wouldn't have bothered watering my plants in the evening!

It was lovely and sunny this morning but cloudier now. Have finally come to work in a fleece instead of the anorak for the first time this year though!

I must admit I fail to see the appeal of a bar code, it just looks like you've been stamped! I like the book connection though.
