  1. Sorry to hear your sad news.
  2. Yeah, I thought it was brilliant too. Its funny how wildly different our tastes in books can be.
  3. I finished Elantris by Brandon Sanderson last night, which I really enjoyed. I will probably start another library book next - The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
  4. Ditto! It's ok if you keep to the sun
  5. Third recommendation for Mistborn here The other thing that came to mind was the Empire trilogy by Raymond E Feist & Janny Wurts. Though that might be more political wrangling than fighting, Mara is a very strong & clever woman who more than holds her own in a difficult world. Also, I'd recommend the Discworld Tiffany Aching books or indeed any of the Discworld Witches books.
  6. I finished watching Roots, which was really good. I have also watched 2 out of 3 parts of OJ: Made in America. I didn't think I would be able to get through something 7 1/2 hours in length but it's been compelling stuff - particularly re-living "The People vs OJ Simpson" tv show from the real life side of it.
  7. Oh, I read that a few years ago. I think it was a kindle freebie? I seem to recall that I enjoyed it I didn't realise there was a sequel, I'll have to look it up.
  8. Another game I'm partway through on the PS3. I'll finish it eventually!
  9. That's really cool. I like The Legend of Zelda
  10. Oooh, god. It's a tricky one for me too as that's also my favourite genre (mostly fantasy, but some sci fi too) Favourites: Dragonlance Chronicles/Legends - Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman Drizzt Do'Urden series - R A Salvatore Farseer/Liveship Traders/Tawny Man trilogies - Robin Hobb Discworld series - Terry Pratchett Memory, Sorrow & Thorn - Tad Williams Also love: Dark Tower - Stephen King The Gap - Stephen Donaldson Empire trilogy - Raymond E Feist & Jenny Wurts Mistborn trilogy - Brandon Sanderson Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson (depending on how it ends up! ) A Song of Ice & Fire (the first 3 books anyway ) - George R R Martin Black Magican trilogy- Trudi Canavan Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy - Douglas Adams Otherland series - Tad Williams The War of the Flowers - Tad Williams Notable mention/guilty pleasure goes to The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind
  11. We took our son for an eye test on Saturday as he said he couldn't see the board at school and needed glasses. I thought it was just one of those ideas he gets in his head sometimes and just wanted to wear glasses because some of his friends do, but actually it was a good job we took him because he had really uneven vision (the beginnings of a lazy eye) and is long sighted so he's got to have quite a strong prescription to fix it. When we pick them up in a couple of weeks time, he'll need to wear them all the time. My husband also managed to get seen at the same time as he hadn't had a test for 4 years and found out that he now also has to wear glasses for reading and VDU work. All in all, that could have been quite an expensive visit, but with the NHS covering James's test & glasses and Tom having a voucher from work giving him a free test and £60 off glasses, it "only" cost £100 for 2 pairs as they had a BOGOF deal.
  12. I finished The Versions of Us and started Elantris by Brandon Sanderson which I'm really enjoying so far. I popped to the library with the little'un today and invariably came away with more books for me - Girl on a train (so I can see what all the fuss is about) and an adaptation of The Killing 3 as I missed this when it was on telly (being embroiled in first time motherhood) and it has steadfastly refused to go onto any streaming service thus far, so I will just have to read it instead!
  13. Thankfully James's class just had to take in a book for a book swap, so the stress of dressing up can wait for another year. Today, I managed to pick up the kids their two free World book day books with their tokens.
  14. I've only watched 1 ep so far, but it was pretty good. Very brutal though! I think the last one is on tonight, so I'm going to try and catch up with the rest of them over the next week or so.
  15. Oh, I never believe anything any manual labourers say about timescales. Actually, that's unfair, we in the IT trade are just as bad at keeping such promises. I can't believe it's March!
  16. Last week I finished Swallows & Amazons and started The Versions of Us by Laura Barnett
  17. Great minds and all that... Started watching Broadchurch last night, which was quite harrowing and then the first episode of Roots, which was even more harrowing! Also following the latest (and last) season of Girls and carrying on with Timeless & This is Us.
  18. It's P-P-P-P-Pancake day (very old reference to a Maid Marion & her Merry Men episode, that probably no one else will know ) , so tonight, it'll be pancakes for dinner.
  19. Over 10 years ago, I bought the collection of A Series of Unfortunate Events books 1-4, as one of my friends had randomly bought me book 5. After reading books 1-5, although amusing, they do all have the same basic plotline so I didn't feel compelled to read any more. I think they are definitely more in the "it's a children's book and should be read by children" camp. However, I thought the film was quite amusing and I might give the TV show a go at some point.
  20. I watched Terry Pratchett: Back in Black which was quite a nice tribute to him, but as someone here has said, don't watch unless you've read The Shepherd's Crown as there's a huge spoiler for that. We also started watching 24: Legacy. It wasn't long before we were sucked in again.
  21. I managed to eliminate the backlog of catch-up tv I'm following, so I've just gone through 3 series of Stewart Lee's comedy vehicle on Netflix, and now over halfway through a rewatch of Catastrophe on All4 in preparation for the new series next week.
  22. Something short and/or easy to read like Terry Pratchett or James Patterson (even though I don't follow him anymore), but they are definite page turners.
  23. I watched the original John Wick the other day for the first time and it was enjoyable enough, but I did end up falling asleep 20 mins before the end (I seem to do that a lot lately ). I do like the video that's going around showing what would have happened if John Wick had died but the dog had survived.
