Habeebi Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Right I want to get a really good crime thriller for my mam for Mother's day - she doesn't read much else basically! She likes Greg Iles and old Martina Cole and I'm looking for a new author for her, someone a bit different! She's no shrinking violet so anything gruesome and shocking is welcome! Suggestions most welcome! Many thanks!!! Quote
Raven Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 Has she tried Patricia Cornwell or Karin Slaughter? Quote

Chrissy Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 I second Karin Slaughter. Additional ones Carol O'Connell Val McDermid Jeffrey Deaver Manda Scott Lisa Gardner Quote
Charm Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 (edited) I would suggest Karen Rose, she writes some fantastic reads starting with Don't Tell. Also Tess Gerritsen does a great thriller series starting with The Surgeon. Erica Spindler has written some crackers for example Cause For Alarm and Bone Cold. I would also 'third' Karen Slaughter books and can add The Rosary Girls by Richard Montanari to the pile as another beginner of a brilliant series! If you would like something gritty and gruesome set in Scotland, I can highly recommend Stuart MacBride's - Cold Granite. Edited March 17, 2011 by Charm Quote
kurtz Posted March 17, 2011 Posted March 17, 2011 My personal favorites are Lawrence Block and Ed McBain. They are not new but they are always suspenseful and realistic. Quote
Kidsmum Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Has she read any of the Linda La Plante books? If not I'd recommend those. Quote
Habeebi Posted March 18, 2011 Author Posted March 18, 2011 Yes she has read a lot of la plante and mcdermaid thats why I was after an author perhaps not so well known as its hard to find something she hasnt read in that genre x Quote
Raven Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Just to point out, I'm not actually recommending Karin Slaughter, she was the second writer to spring to mind when I saw the thread title. I tried reading one of her books but didn't get more than a couple of pages in, I was completely put off by the OTT and cliché way she wrote a rather graphic murder. Quote
Coffin Nail Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 I'd second Tess Gerritsen--The Bone Garden Quote
Vanwa Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 Can't say I have Habeebi. But two further options are James Patterson (the Alex Cross novels, not the ones) and Mark Billingham. My own mum is an avid crime-thriller reader, and these are her two favourite authors from the genre. Quote
Habeebi Posted March 19, 2011 Author Posted March 19, 2011 Thanks for all your suggestions, I think I'll try Mark Billingham, Manda Scott and Erica Spindler as I've never heard her mention any of those so they should be a safe bet for a present. Interesting how so many crime/thriller authors seem to be women! Quote
Chrissy Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Manda Scott has written a variety of stuff, including the excellent 'Boudicca' series, but her crime books that I would recommend are 'No Good Deed', 'Hen's Teeth', 'Night Mares' and 'Stronger Than Death'. Quote
Habeebi Posted March 19, 2011 Author Posted March 19, 2011 Well I have purchased a few there on Amazon which I think she won't have read fingers crossed. Of course I also had to get a couple for myself so bought two Jeffery Deaver - The Blue nowhere and The Coffin Dancer.....they were only a penny each! Quote

The Blue Nowhere is a fantastic read, one of my favourite Deaver books! Bear in mind though, The Coffin Dancer is a sequel to The Bone Collector Enjoy! Quote
pickle Posted March 19, 2011 Posted March 19, 2011 Hi Habeebi I have read quite a few Tammi Hoag books, quite a while agp I admit, some of her good ones are Guilty as sin and Night sins csn't remember which of these is is the first as they are two in sequence, another good one is A Thin Dark Line. I like the books by John Connolly his series are quite dark. Quote
Habeebi Posted March 20, 2011 Author Posted March 20, 2011 Charm - just bought the bone collecter at a market so ill make sure I read that first x Quote
Charm Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Charm - just bought the bone collecter at a market so ill make sure I read that first x Nice one The Bone Collector film, starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie, isn't too bad either. Quote
kurtz Posted March 21, 2011 Posted March 21, 2011 I also highly recommend The Stone Monkey, another Lincoln Rhyme novel, but my favorite Deaver book was The Devil's Teardrop. Quote
Tai_Mai_Shu Posted March 22, 2011 Posted March 22, 2011 I second Tess Gerritsen and Jeffery Deaver. The Blue Nowhere is good but it doesn't feature Lincoln Rhymes but still good. The Empty Chair is another good book of his. Quote
kurtz Posted March 23, 2011 Posted March 23, 2011 I just finished another mystery of series I highly recommend. Book is China Trade by S.J.Rozan, which is one of series about P.I. Bill Smith and Chinese partner Lydia Chin. I am currently reading another of this series, Winter and Night. They are not ultra-violent but very good characters and also funny. Quote
