Ben Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I can honestly say Enthusiast that I have not read one bad book so far this year Glad to hear that! Nice review for the diary of Anne Frank, my Grandma was trying to get me to read this, I think I might. Quote
Kell Posted January 20, 2009 Posted January 20, 2009 I saw Plucker in a shop the other day and immediately thought of you and Kell. I flicked through a good part of the book and it's certainly very impressive-looking. I might buy it one day so I can read it properly. It's my aim. this year, to bring Brom to more peoples' attention - I just loaned my copy of The Devil's Rose to my b-i-l yesterday too. I think Brom is an artist and writer worthy of much attention and acclaim! Quote
Weave Posted January 23, 2009 Author Posted January 23, 2009 Grave Sight (Harper Connelly Series) by Charlaine Harris (Started: 20.01.09 ~ Finished: 22.01.09) Posted here and The Book series thread Synopsis ~ Harper Connelly had a lucky escape when she was hit by lightning: she didn't die. But sometimes she wishes she had died, because the lightning strike left her with an unusual talent: she can find dead people - and that's not always comfortable. Everyone wants to know how she does it: it's a little like hearing a bee droning inside her head, or maybe the pop of a Geiger counter, a persistent, irregular noise that increases in strength as she gets closer. It's almost electric: a buzzing all through her body, and the fresher the corpse, the more intense the buzz. Harper and her brother Tolliver make their living from finding the dead, for desperate parents, worried friends . . . and police departments who have nowhere else to look. They may not believe in her abilities, but sometimes the proof is just too much for even the most sceptical of police chiefs to deny. But it's not always easy for someone like Harper, for the dead *want* to be found - and too often, finding the body doesn't bring closure; it opens a whole new can of worms. 'Grave Sight' is the first book of the Harper Connelly series by Charlaine Harris, I enjoyed reading 'The Stookie Stackhouse' series also by Charlaine Harris. 'Grave Sight' was slighly darker than the Stookie books and was action packed from the start, a great mystery but at the same time you get to know the characters of Harper and her step~brother, Tolliver and their background. 'Grave Sight' will not leave you disappointed if you enjoy this type of book, an easy, fun read which draws you in. The only downside was how dragged out certain parts of the story were but that was just impatience on my part. Rating: 10/10 Quote

Weave Posted January 25, 2009 Author Posted January 25, 2009 (edited) Grave Surprise (Harper Connelly Series) by Charlaine Harris (Started: 23.01.09 ~ Finished: 25.01.09) Posted here and The TBR challenge Synopsis ~ A bolt of lightning struck Harper Connelly when she was 15, leaving her with a strange spider web of red on her torso and right leg, episodes of weakness, shakes and headaches - and an ability to find dead people. Harper is summoned to Memphis to demonstrate her unique talent, but there are still plenty of sceptics, even as Harper stands atop a grave and announces there are two bodies buried there. The police are convinced there's something fishy going on when the grave is opened to reveal the centuries-dead remains of a man, which they'd expected (that being his grave, after all) and a dead girl, which no one expected - except Harper, of course. And suspicions are raised even further because Harper had failed to find eleven-year-old Tabitha Morgenstern when she was abducted two years before. Harper and Tolliver need to find the real killer to prove Harper's innocence, especially after their nocturnal visit to the cemetery in hopes that Harper can sense something more is followed by the discovery, the following morning, of a third dead body in the grave . . . 'Grave Surprise' is the second book of the Harper Connelly Series. The story continues from the end of 'Grave Sight' and is just as good as the first book, in fact~better!* Another mystery present itself for Harper and Tolliver, the main aspect of the mystery is the fact that Harper has previously worked on the case and suddenly they are drew back into it. 'Grave Surprise' was full of mystery and I could not put it down, I was intrigued to know who was the murderer, Charlaine Harris is a brilliant mystery/supernatural author.* I heartily recommend this series and I am now about to begin the third installment. Rating:* 10/10 Edited January 25, 2009 by Weave Messed up photobucket code Quote

Weave Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 (edited) The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman (Started: 26.01.09 ~ Finished: 27.01.09 Synopsis ~ Bod is an unusual boy who inhabits an unusual place-he's the only living resident of a graveyard. Raised from infancy by the ghosts, werewolves, and other cemetery denizens, Bod has learned the antiquated customs of his guardians' time as well as their timely ghostly teachings-like the ability to Fade. Can a boy raised by ghosts face the wonders and terrors of the worlds of both the living and the dead? And then there are things like ghouls that aren't really one thing or the other. I really enjoyed reading 'The Graveyard Book', another gem by Neil Gaimain. The story was excellent (based loosely on 'The Jungle Book' by Rudyard Kipling, just change the animals for ghosts ). Nobody, affectionately known as Bod was a wonderful character, he was full of spirit and determination. Silas was a great character and an excellent guardian to Bod. I am so sentimental sometimes, I had a tear in my eye at the end but it was a nice tear, not a sad tear. Highly recommnded. Rating: 10/10 Edited August 18, 2009 by Weave Quote
Kell Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I'm so glad you enjoyed this one, Paula - I thought it was great too. Quote

Weave Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 An Ice Cold Grave (Harper Connelly Series) by Charlaine Harris (Started: 25.01.09 ~ Finished: 28.01.09) Synopsis ~ Harper Connelly was struck by lightning as a teenager, and now she can find the dead. In her third case, Harper and Tolliver, her stepbrother, are hired to find a missing grandson. But the truth is far worse than a single dead child, for numerous teenage boys, all unlikely runaways, have disappeared from Doraville, North Carolina. Harper soon finds the eight bodies, buried in the half-frozen ground, but then, still reeling from coming into contact with her first serial killer, she is attacked and injured. Now she and Tolliver have no choice but to stay in Doraville while she recovers, and as she reluctantly becomes part of the investigation, she learns more than she cares to about the dark mysteries and long-hidden secrets of the town: knowledge that makes her the most likely person to be next to end up in an ice-cold grave. It was all happening in the third installment of the Harper Connelly series by Charlaine Harris. 'An Ice Cold Grave' was my favourite book of the series. The story was brilliant, suspenseful, exciting and a great twist too. Highly recommended Rating: 10/10 Quote
Weave Posted January 28, 2009 Author Posted January 28, 2009 I have started reading 'Sleep, pale sister' by Joanne Harris Synopsis ~ Henry Chester, a domineering and puritanical Victorian artist, is in search of the perfect model. In nine-year-old Effie he finds her. Ten years later, lovely, childlike and sedated, Effie seems the ideal wife. But something inside her is about to awaken. Drawn by her lover, Mose, into a dangerous underworld of intrigue and blackmail, she meets Fanny Miller, the brothel-keeper, and her shadowy daughter, Marta - murdered ten years ago on the day of Henry's weekly visit...And as friendship becomes possession and Henry's secret past is revealed, Effie and Marta plan their revenge together. Weave Posted January 31, 2009 Author Posted January 31, 2009 (edited) South of the Border, West of the Sun by Haruki Murakami (Started: 31.01.09 ~ Finished: 31.01.09) Synopsis ~ Growing up in the suburbs in post-war Japan, it seemed to Hajime that everyone but him had brothers and sisters. His sole companion was Shimamoto, also an only child. Together they spent long afternoons listening to her father's record collection. But when his family moved away, the two lost touch. Now Hajime is in his thirties. After a decade of drifting he has found happiness with his loving wife and two daughters, and success running a jazz bar. Then Shimamoto reappears. She is beautiful, intense, enveloped in mystery. Hajime is catapulted into the past, putting at risk all he has in the present. I really enjoyed 'South of the Border, West of the Sun', so much in fact, I read in a day, another gem by Haruki Murakami. The story flows easily and the characters are wonderfully written. Highly recommended: 10/10 Edited January 31, 2009 by Weave Quote
