Galactic Space Hamster
I was reading a blog entry and came across something that I sometimes think about. This person was saying they have this huge "to be read" pile and would really hate do die and have all t hose books unread. Is that something that would bother you? It's something I have considered from time to time. I think it would bother me to leave those books that I have unread. I know, in the great scheme of things that it's not really that important, but it would bother me.
Louiseog
And me, they were chosen very carefully, often worry about it and prune vigorously!
Kell
I'd probably end up haunting a library or a big book shop! I have quite a sizeable TBR pile, both of books and audio books (it just keeps getting bigger - I downloaded about a dozen classics audio books yesterday!). And even then, there are so many more books out there that i intend to read but don't have yet - I hate to think of leaving all those lovely books unread! That's why I don't feel so bad any more about ditching books I'm not enjoying, so that I can try something else instead - I used to find it impossible to leave a book unfinished once I'd started it, till I realised what a waste of valuable reading time that was. angerball
It would bother me, and it's something I do tend to think about. It seems my TBR list is growing daily; I do get quite concerned that I won't get to read all the "good" books out there before I cark it. No way around it though, but to keep plowing through them. Karen1
Prior to the last Harry Potter book I had visions of me dying and never finding out what happened. I know that it's kind of sad but it would have been horrible not being able to read the ending.
Oblomov
I am not sure that I would have read all the books that I own by the time I pop my clogs. I keep telling myself that I'll have more reading time once I retire from work (in about 9 years time), but then that also means more TV and DVD watching time, more socialising and other "catch-up" activities. We humans are generally crazy.
Icecream
I feel just like Kell. There are so many books out there waiting to be read. I have actually thought about this quite often and not like to leave them unread, but there are so so many. I know that the books I have and some others I would not want to leave unread.I do wonder if i will get through them. I also often think that there is not much in this world worth anything. Books provide an escape from that for me, so I should definitely read more.
JudyB
Phew - I thought I was the only person to have this thought and felt a bit guilty about it as, as Hamster says, there are far bigger things to worry about. Will I have written on my gravestone something like 'never got round to reading . . . '?
Angel
Yes it does bother me when I think of all those unread books especially as mount TBR never seems to go down!. I also worry about what will happen to my said books and how well they will be looked after .
Galactic Space Hamster
I also worry about what will happen to my said books and how well they will be looked after . Ah yeah, see that's another worry! Thanks :-p lol What happens to the books after you die? I'm sure all us book lovers would want our books to go to a nice home where they would be appreciated. Mia
The whole "leaving books unread" thing has occurred to me too, the last time being yesterday, funnily enough! (Hammy, are you reading my thoughts?!) Anyway, I recently resolved that it would be sensible to always read the books I most want to read first, and leave the ones I'm not so bothered about for later. (This is like the "favourite food" principle - have you ever saved the favourite part of your meal for last and then been too full to eat it? The horror! I only did this once. Never let it be said I do not learn from my mistakes.) As for where I would like my books to go, I guess it would be my ex-primary school for the kids/young adult ones, and possibly my library for the others? (That's if I get the job there I went for, if not they can whistle for the books. )
Kylie
I would hate to die without having read all the books I own (and all the others I want to read!) but realistically I know I will probably never get to read them all. All I can do is try my best and, like Mia, read the books that I most want to read first, and work my way down. I'm not sure what would happen to my books. My family doesn't read, so possibly they would just give my books to charity or something.
pontalba
I do have a ton of unread TBR books, and I'd hate to not finish all of them, but otoh, if I finish...I'll just have to buy more, so there will always be unread books in Mt. TBR. Gosh, at least I hope so! As far as what happens to my books if I croak, well, that is why we have Wills, yes? Decide who you want to have your books, and take care of it! jenmck
I'm not worried. I believe in heaven which would be a huge library and tons of time to read. I just have to figure out how to get there.

I remember WELL, all to well in fact, when leaving to come over here to Vancouver Island 8/9 years ago; MOST if not NEARLY all the boxs filled were of....you got it BOOKS. the ones that weren't were chairs a table or two and a bed. Books to us bookaholics is something we can't really put in to words that none fervant book readers have no conception. I as do many others here on BCF have loads of books, and others we are just (know pun intended) dying to read, and for one reason are another never will sadly. We even wonder what will hapen to our beloved books when we pass on, and hope said books will find a new home with fellow :bookworm:'s And jenmck, I'm with you, and Kell,? Now, that WOULD be heaven indeed! you are so right. Books, there is nothing on earth like them, to us :bookworm:s It's the second greatest gift a woman can give her child. Roland Butter
I have to be honest - if I were on the point of dying, I don't think my books (much as I love 'em) would figure too highly on my list of priorities!
Freewheeling Andy
I don't think I would. I'm more concerned about the things I've not done, and the things I've not said. I read to entertain or to learn, and I only want to learn as something I can use when I'm doing stuff. Missing out on some entertainment I don't care much about. And if I'm on the verge of death, I think the stuff that's not learned if not much use to me anyway.
~Andrea~
Sometimes there may be the odd book that I think, Oh I REALLY must read that. I would like to get those essentials read, before, its too late I guess. But there are not many books on my TBR like that. Even then, I don't think it would bother me that much. Like FA says, I would be more worried about the things I hadn't done I expect.
Liz
I'm the same as some of you guys - I don't think I would worry about my mountain of 'to be read' books. I would probably make sure that all of my books would be going to a safe home. When my grandfather died, all of his leatherbound classics which he had collected and treasured all of his life were just thrown away because no-one wanted them - this was when I was very little, otherwise I would have made sure they were well looked after by someone. This topic reminds me of a question my sister and I were thinking about - if you knew you were going to die and you could only read one more book before you kicked the bucket, which one would it be? We are all a bit of a morbid bunch, eh?

Kylie
I think that needs a thread of its own. Seconded! I'll leave it to you Liz seeing as it's your idea. In the meantime, I'll start thinking, although I'm sure I won't be able to pick just one!
