No .. Oliver usually illustrates books (and writes them) for littlies. But they made a short animated film out of one a few years ago and it was just the most darling thing ever .. or I thought so Poor Barnaby

Littlies as in kids under 10yo or so? Perhaps I don't read very much of them. Picture books? I do like the cover, like you do and I liked the illustrations. There's another book by John Boyne in the children's section that I've thought about borrowing and I'm now wondering if Oliver has his hands on that one, too :D Lemme see...

Ah yes, you can't mistake this one for someone other than Oliver!

What a great idea .. getting borrowers to vote on books they'd like to see stocked. Brilliant! I hope some of your clicks make it through. That is excellent customer service. My library could do with taking a leaf .. out of .. their book  (sorry .. the pun only occurred to me as I was typing) I don't think they've changed their titles this millennium. They are doing the bare minimum as far as I'm concerned and not encouraging readers.  I could do it better (of course) in my sleep!!

It's such a boon to have a well stocked library (or libraries) nearby .. it saves one lots of pennies for a start and you can take chances on books which is liberating.

It's a fabulous idea! I mean of course they take in requests from customers and I've had my requests most often 'approved' and they've acquired copies. (Except for the first Dresden Files book by Jim Butcher :giggle2: But no matter, they have copies of those here in the south :D) But this is a lot more customer friendly: this way the customers are more proactive, when they get a chance to influence the acquisitions at such an early age. Edit: Haha! Age! I means stage, LOL.

There was a biography of Penelope Fitzgerald by Hermione Lee and nobody had clicked on that one :( But I did!! :D I've been wanting to read a few of her books for a while now: I've had The Bookshop on my wishlist for ages, and your review (? I'm quite sure it was your review  ) on The Blue Flower made me add that one to my wishlist, too. And so I've become fascinated by her eventhough I haven't yet read anything by her. And the bio is by Hermione Lee, who's written a lot of great bios (so I've heard!), so of course I want to read the book!

I have to say, the pun went right over my head :D I mean I get the pun but the real meaning of the phrase you've used is something I've never heard of  That shouldn't surprise me, your English is so lyrical and innovative and prosaic all the time.

I hear the state of libraries in the UK (as well as in some other countries) is quite horrid. It's such a shame. Personally I think libraries ought to be one's constitutional right, but of course the first cut downs occur within the areas that aren't life sustaining. But don't they understand the libraries sustain our mental health and soul life. :(

I don't think I ever realized, 100%, how lucky I am to be a Finn and have such a great library system until I've read some of the horror stories of the libraries overseas on this forum. I feel so lucky and I'm forever grateful.

Which library is your closest one? I'd like to see pics! :)

At the start of the year, my read books total on Goodreads was at 932 books, and one of my challenges for this year has been to get to 1,000 read books. I've marked all my read books on a notebook and Goodreads from the year 1998 onwards, and I've also added the ones I remember having read as a kid and a teen even before 1998.

At the moment, my read books stand at 989, so I have 11 books to go. Now that my mojo is back, I'm pretty confident I can reach 1,000 read books by the end of the year :smile2: I think I will have to save something really special for the 999th book!

Ooh, how exciting! Keep us posted as you get closer (please). :)

You just inspired me to go and check my number of 'read' books on Goodreads. Only 671! Looks like I'll be celebrating my 1000th read in another 6-7 years at this rate. :(

Very exciting! I'm with Kylie, please keep us posted :).

I only started recording my read books a few years ago, currently it says 951 read which doesn't include many Dutch books I read that aren't listed on GoodReads. Somewhere in the first half of next year I'll have 1000 read on GR.

I'm so glad your mojo is much better these days :smile2:.

When did you start keeping list of the books you've read? I'm sure you've read more, you just need to dig your memory for the books you haven't catalogued on GR :) And it's really only just a number, it doesn't actually mean anything :)

I'm sure you'll be flying to 1,000 in the next few weeks at your reading pace :)

I'll keep you guys posted! :)

You've just inspired me to go and look at my records which I started in February 2006, and I'm on 1074 books finished, so I passed the 1000 mark in May! :D

Well done chesil! :exc: You're a mean reading machine, you go through books like I go through chippies :giggle2::blush:

I started keeping a spreadsheet of my books read in 2006 and I joined Goodreads in January 2008. I'm sure if I updated my books on Goodreads and wracked my brain for earlier reads I could probably bump up the number a bit, but probably still not close to 1000!

Do you remember that time in Gilmore Girls when Lorelai and Rory visited Harvard and Rory freaked out a bit when she realised how many books she hadn't read? I think she commented that she had only read around 300 books. I always thought that was a bit silly on the part of the writers because I'm sure she would have read many more books than that by her age...although now that I think about it some more, I suppose that's still around 30 books per year if she had started reading on her own when she was 6 or 7. Hmm...nope, still seems too few.

I started to keep track in June 2012. I've added the books that I own that I've read (other than the children's and young adult books still in boxes.. :blush2:) but I read lots at the library in earlier years but unfortunately don't remember the authors or titles (I'd recognise some of the covers but GoodReads mainly has the English covers and not the Dutch). I really wish I started to keep track earlier on.

Thanks :).

That sounds really interesting! Do you remember which season this was in? I want to know how quickly I can get to it :P (of course, I have to wait until my birthday as I don't have the DVDs yet). It does seem too few to me as well (though I haven't seen the episode obviously).

It's season two, episode four: The Road Trip to Harvard. Here's the quote, which is deliciously bookish:

Lorelai has just told Rory that Harvard has 13 million books:

RORY: Thirteen million volumes? I've read like, what, three hundred books in my entire life and I'm already sixteen? Do you know how long it would take me to read thirteen million books?

LORELAI: But honey, you don't have to read every one of them. "Tuesday's with Morrie?" Skip that. "Who Moved My Cheese?" Just stuff you already know.

RORY: Okay, but every kid coming to Harvard is inevitably reading books, and different books, and I want to be able to converse intelligently with each of them and I can't do that unless I read books, at least a few from every genre and sub-genre.

I'm sure you can't be too far behind! :) And your mojo's been great this year and it's really been speeding things up :cool:

Of course I remember! :D Yeah 30 books per year for Rory does seem like an understatement. But she's a humble person, maybe she knew she's more like around 500 but didn't want to boast :D And some of the books she's read are big books and difficult books :cool:

Edit: Also, she always did her homework and probably read all the extra notes and suggested further reading, and didn't mark those as read books. So she didn't have as much time for recreational reading as she would have had she been slacking at school :D

I went to the library last Saturday and I was browsing the self-help books and psychology books for fun. And I came across a book by Augusten Burroughs, by coincidence! It's a book I haven't yet read but it's on my wishlist as are all the Burroughs books I don't yet own.

This particular book is called This Is How – Surviving What You Think You Can't.

I wanted to borrow it of course, and I started reading it at the library. It's a collection of essays on 'how to' do different things, and I randomly chose one essay to start with, and it was titled 'How To Fail':

~

You will learn much more from failing than from making straight As in life. A string of failures is far more valuable than a string of wins.

The reason is that our brains were programmed in the factory to look for and pay special attention to novelty. Which is to say, the unique.

So if you're a straight-A student in school or a metaphorical straight-A student in your adult life, that's a whole lot of the same old, same old.

One A+ paper blends right into the next.

It's when you get a D that you learn something valuable. It's when you fall on your ass that you actually make progress.

I am a complete and total fudgeup. Which is exactly why I am equipped to write this book and tell you how to live.

I made rings out of gemstones and bronze and I never went to school for this, I never took a design class and I have no business, actually, handling 1,525-degree metal and chrysoberyl cat's eye gems. But I do it anyway. And when I began, I made one hideous disaster of a ring after another until I had made maybe three hundred.

Each time, I tried to make one nice ring. Each time, I totally failed.

Until ring number 301. Which was suddenly, inexplicably cool.

Now I make more good rings than lousy ones. There are always new mistakes to make. But I almost never make my old, rerun mistakes.

Perfectionism is the satin-lined casket of creativity and originality. It you are a perfectionist, at least stop telling everybody you're one and try to get over it yourself, alone in your home with the lights off.

~

Reading this made me feel good and happy :) Then I read another essay called 'How To Feel Like S*it', and 'How To Find Love'. Both were excellent :D They both made me think about stuff. Real stuff.

  • 2 weeks later...

Remember when I told you the library folks were letting patrons choose which English books they'd like the libraries to acquire? They've made the choices now according to the clicks by the patrons. There were 520 books to choose from, and people clicked on 502 of them. That's only 18 books that nobody was interested in (although I kinda feel bad for the 18 books  :empathy: ).

The most popular titles were Nick Hornby's Funny Girl, Tove Jansson's Moomin books and Joanne M. Harris's Gospel of Loki.

I'm sorry that the list is very difficult to read. I got it on PDF format and couldn't just copy+paste the titles, the ISBN numbers and all of it was copied as well. And there are no commas or anything after the title and before the author's last name, so it's a frustrating and difficult read. But I wanted to share the list with you anyways. I've marked the books I clicked myself with red.

I think it's safe to say that because of my vote, the library will have a copy of Penelope Fitzgerald's biography by Hermione Lee, as I was the only one voting for the book! :D

^ Don't worry, it happens :)

I finished another great read last night and when I went to log the book in the read books post on the first page of this reading log, I stopped to wonder how it can be that I haven't yet read any books that have warranted a 1/5 from me. I then wanted to count the average rating for the books I've read this year. And it was a staggering 3,82. :thud: That's well above my Goodreads average.

I'm also really happy that my mojo's doing so great at the moment. I lost it for quite a while earlier this year, and I've been through some things in the past few months, and I've been worried about my mojo lately but it's been going strong  I think the library and its great selection (and free reservations :giggle2:) have really contributed to that. :smile2:

Yay!! Your mojo is back with a vengeance  I feel mine is too .. must be something in the water :D You've had a stellar year too as far as reading good books is concerned. Your mojo has been rewarded for it's patience :D That reminds me, we must, must, must, get around to reading those Moomin books soon. I need to know what they're about. I know they're more intriguing than I've ever given them credit for .. I've just been viewing them as shapeless lumps  .. something to do with the cartoon series which I could never make head nor tail of. Octavia loves them .. she always has them in her shop window displays .. it's an addiction with her I think.

However, I do hope that any Moomin reading won't have an adverse effect on our mojos :D

He has a really recognisable style :) Yes .. his books are for very small people .. as in toddlers etc. That is, I don't think he has written any for older children .. he probably just writes a few words to accompany his gorgeous drawings. I only know him from the animated version of his book Lost and Found which was lovely.

Ooh .. pic of Oliver:

That was a bonus .. whilst looking for the book cover :D

It's a fabulous idea! I mean of course they take in requests from customers and I've had my requests most often 'approved' and they've acquired copies. (Except for the first Dresden Files book by Jim Butcher. But no matter, they have copies of those here in the south.) But this is a lot more customer friendly: this way the customers are more proactive, when they get a chance to influence the acquisitions at such an early age. Edit: Haha! Age! I means stage, LOL.

Marvellous .. it sounds like they really care about catering for the local community :)

There was a biography of Penelope Fitzgerald by Hermione Lee and nobody had clicked on that one. But I did!! I've been wanting to read a few of her books for a while now: I've had The Bookshop on my wishlist for ages, and your review (? I'm quite sure it was your review.) on The Blue Flower made me add that one to my wishlist, too. And so I've become fascinated by her eventhough I haven't yet read anything by her. And the bio is by Hermione Lee, who's written a lot of great bios (so I've heard!), so of course I want to read the book!

That biography is said to be marvellous .. I'd love to read it too. I particularly loved The Blue Flower .. if you ever get hold of it then we must do a group read or something :) I've got her letters collection too .. an acquisition from Hay-on-Wye .. must get around to them :blush2: Lord .. I haven't made a start on that lovely collection of Virginia's letters that Alan bought me last Christmas. They're on display downstairs and as such I forget that I'm supposed to be reading them and not just admiring them. if I take one down it will ruin my display  :blush2:

I have to say, the pun went right over my head. I mean I get the pun but the real meaning of the phrase you've used is something I've never heard of. That shouldn't surprise me, your English is so lyrical and innovative and prosaic all the time.

It is ... innit! :D

A lot of towns etc are struggling to keep hold of their libraries :( It's so sad but the fault probably lies with the humans who don't visit them enough. I used to live in a little town where the librarian used to practically beg you to take out more books than you wanted/needed as the library was under threat of closure and the powers that be were looking at the number of books borrowed etc. All very well and good but it was quite a walk home with ten books under my arm :D

I don't think I ever realized, 100%, how lucky I am to be a Finn and have such a great library system until I've read some of the horror stories of the libraries overseas on this forum. I feel so lucky and I'm forever grateful.

Which library is your closest one? I'd like to see pics!

There is only one in Cirencester .. I will take a pic when I'm next there. It's pretty uninspiring and I've sort of exhausted it but still go there for a mooch fairly regularly. You can order books but the staff are not that helpful :( I love the one at North Swindon which is about a 20 min or so car journey away. I would LOVE it to be on my doorstep .. it' s just packed full of books and they want you to read. The Cirencester one try to let you off reading :D It's like .. here are the DVD's and the computers .. and the Quick Reads. Their classic selection is tiny .. and they're just not up to date with books .. very few recent titles if any and they just don't have that many books full stop. It's one of the few disappointing things about Cirencester .. that and the fact that Colin Firth doesn't live here :D
