Drislane Posted August 21, 2013 Posted August 21, 2013 'Il Postino' (1994), an Italian film directed by Michael Radford is for me a film of rare beauty, one that I can recommend without hesitation. Italy, 1950's, a world famous poet, a simple postman, the ways of love, beauty in the simple things......What are you waiting for? Quote

Athena Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 Would a Dutch/Belgian film count as foreign, or does it not because I'm Dutch? In any case.. Ben X is a film about a boy with autism and about bullying. You have to be in the right mood to watch it, but I liked it a lot. Other than that, I like Shaolin Soccer and some other ones.. my boyfriend has quite a few foreign films on DVD / Blu-ray but I don't remember all of the names (I've not watched all of them, as well, but some were quite good). Karsa Orlong Posted August 22, 2013 Posted August 22, 2013 If you like those you might also like The curse of the golden flower. I wasn't quite so keen on that one, I'm not sure why Couple more I remembered: Mesrine (parts 1 & 2) A Prophet Quote

saintmark Posted August 25, 2013 Posted August 25, 2013 (edited) Would a Dutch/Belgian film count as foreign, or does it not because I'm Dutch? I was just wondering about the label foreign films, as I am Dutch as well even the US movies would qualify as foreign. I generally call the non-mainstream movies , moviehouse movies and they can be from anywhere but are not so much part of the big H'wood machine. I have a strong like in French cinema where they have shown too often that they are far more original in thinking and moviemaking than their US competition. Edited August 25, 2013 by saintmark Quote

poppy Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 thanks poppy will check those out....was Janet Frame from nz? If so i loved the bio film of her life.... Yes, she was Itsme, and I loved An Angel At My Table too. She was a fascinating person, very shy and quite reclusive, although she travelled quite extensively. Have you read her autobiographical books? The film was directed by NZer Jane Campion who also directed The Piano. Quote
itsmeagain Posted August 28, 2013 Posted August 28, 2013 She spent a lot of time in mental hospitals and amazingly, just avoided a lobotomy when she was reprieved due to her first collection of short stories to be published, won an award. Happy birthday Janet Frame. Quote
itsmeagain Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 A French film named red lights is well worth a look, terrific drama involving a road journey, check it out if you can please. Quote
