It has taken one and a half weeks, but I think I have finally finished setting up my lists for the year! They became hopelessly out of date last year, so I updated them by physically going through my shelves. In doing so, I got distracted and ended up doing a lot of rearranging of my shelves. On the plus side, I gained several shelves and have plans to free up over half a bookcase (all without getting rid of any books)!

I nearly got carried away with all sorts of best-of lists, but I decided to keep it simple and stick with the Rory and 1001 lists, as well as Frankie's and Poppyshake's must-reads.

Right...now I can start reading!

I was in a same situation as you half way through last year. I decided to tidy up my lists on Goodreads and ended up deleting my lists, re-arranging my bookcases and re-listing everything. Fortunately I have a fraction of the books that you own so it only took me a day to do.

My lists on Goodreads are so out of date. I bought some new book cataloguing software and had nearly everything catalogued, but I think I've already managed to get that out of date too. I'm hopeless!

Can't wait to see photos of your library Kylie!

I'll try to get them up in the next few days. They're pretty tidy at the moment, but I have a couple of dozen books to shelve first.

As much as I would have liked to start the year off fresh, I am still in the middle of 4 books that I started last year, so they will end up being my first reads of 2013. I'm focusing on The Casual Vacancy and Stiff at the moment. Both are great. Oddly, I find TCV far more disturbing than Stiff.

Happy reading in 2013 Kylie!

Thanks Steve! :D

Thanks Athena and Bree. :)

I had a pretty poor reading year last year, so I'm determined to make more time for reading this year.

Hellooooooo Kylie! I hope you have the most bestest, awesomest, happiest reading year this year, a reading year that will kick the ass of your reading year 2012! :friends3:

Awww, you have Frankie's and Poppyshake's Must Reads in one of your quick links... *feels very honored* I have yours, too, but I just haven't named it so elegantly.

You have a very short wishlist... :o I can barely see any letters there?! Is it because you've bought them all already, or am I to find another post later on in the thread where you keep a separate post for that wishlist... *reads on*

You have 8 posts (if I counted correctly) for your TBR list only :D I think that's a record, and I take my imaginary hat off to you! Do you have any priority reads this year, do you think?

^ Okay, I was wrong, that was just the fictional novels  I should've known your books will cover more than 8 posts!!

I went through the titles in my and poppyshake's Must Read lists and I noticed you've read more of the books on poppyshake's list than on mine. Maybe your tastes are closer to poppyshakes! Interesting... I love your Must Read list that I have on my log, it's also very funny and telling, because all of the fiction titles are books that I have either read, have on my TBR or on my wishlist :D And that's not because I've started following your list, it was just that way when you gave me the list in the first place! :friends3:

Lovely, lovely, almost lickable lists, and very organised, as always! And as every, I'm going to keep a very close eye on this log ;)

Edit: Oh hey Kylie, can I comment on the huge book haul you told me about in this log rather than last years? Because you did get the titles this year. But if you want, I can also do it in your 2012 log, no problems :)

I'm now going to go through your humongous (that's one of my favorite adjectives) TBR pile and I'm going to compile a list for you of the books I think you should bump up on your TBR pile :) This is all done in good humour and with good intentions, I definitely don't want you to feel any pressure, I know how erratic your reading has been the last year and we don't want to scare your mojo away! :friends3: And remember, there are so many books I'd like you to read, that this is just a really rough, tentative list.

Alan Bennett The Uncommon Reader

I think you might really enjoy this, it's short and it's somewhat funny, and what's best, it's basically a cool story about a newbie reader, who comes to discover amazing things about books and reading, things that you and I and the rest of us already know!

John Boyne Crippen

Michael Chabon The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay

Michel Faber Under the Skin

Helen Fielding Bridget Jones's Diary

Stephen Fry The Hippopotamus

Lloyd Jones Mister Pip

Sue Monk Kidd The Secret Life of Bees

Astrid Lindgren The Brothers Lionheart

Jeff Lindsay Darkly Dreaming Dexter

LM Montgomery Emily #1: Emily of New Moon

Haruki Murakami Sputnik Sweetheart

Dai Sijie Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress

I think you might just fall in love with this... And if it helps, it's a short read as well! :)

Donna Tartt The Secret History

Sue Townsend The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4

Awww, thanks! :D

JG Ballard Miracles of Life

This Ballard comes up every now and then, I know s/he's on the 1001 Books list... I might've asked you this before, but have you read anything by him/her?

Quentin Blake The Life of Birds

This is the illustrator that has illustrated some of the Roald Dahl books, yes? Is he an author, too, or is this a picture book?

Augusten Burroughs A Wolf at the Table

Wohoo, awesome awesome awesome! :D:giggle2:

Michael Chabon Manhood for Amateurs

I noticed you have quite a selection of Chabon's titles when I was going through your TBR list, have you read anything by him?

Linda Flavell Dictionary of English Down the Ages

Hehe, this sounds right up your alley!

Steven E Landsburg More Sex is Safer Sex: The Unconventional Wisdom of Economics

Sexy economics, not a bad way to approach the subject...

Gregory Leland Am-Bushed

What's this?

Mary Roach Packing for Mars

Hehe, you couldn't resist, could you :D

Jon Ronson Out of the Ordinary

Jon Ronson What I Do: More True Tales of Everyday Craziness

I've recently added The Psychopath Test to my wishlist, thanks to you and poppyshake, and if it's any good I might look these titles up, too! :)

Connor Woodman The Adventure Capitalist

Are you going capitalist on me, now? :o

Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice (Vintage edition)

Is pretty? Must be pretty!

Misery Bear Misery Bear's Guide to Love and Heartbreak

I have some very cool news! :cool:Neil Gaiman is giving a talk in Sydney on 25 January, and I'm going!

There's going to be 'stories, music, madness and surprises, along with a Q&A' (according to Gaiman's Facebook page), and he'll be reading from his new book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, which will be published in June. There will also be an appearance by his favourite string quartet, FourPlay (Australian group). I'm not sure how they fit in - maybe they play while he's reading? Ooh, and 'Each ticket holder will receive an exclusive printed preview of Neil's forthcoming novel on the night'. :D

Here's the synopsis of his upcoming book (from the Book Depository):

THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE is a fable that reshapes modern fantasy: moving, terrifying and elegiac - as pure as a dream, as delicate as a butterfly's wing, as dangerous as a knife in the dark, from storytelling genius Neil Gaiman. It began for our narrator forty years ago when the family lodger stole their car and committed suicide in it, stirring up ancient powers best left undisturbed. Dark creatures from beyond the world are on the loose, and it will take everything our narrator has just to stay alive: there is primal horror here, and menace unleashed - within his family and from the forces that have gathered to destroy it. His only defense is three women, on a farm at the end of the lane. The youngest of them claims that her duckpond is ocean. The oldest can remember the Big Bang.

You should read Stardust too, Hayley - it's wonderful!

I'll pop it on my wish list Janet as I trust your choice of books (I liked Tess too, just don't tell frankie..) Did I see a film of Stardust years ago?

:)

There is a film called Stardust, I looked it up and it is apparently based on the novel! I've recorded it from TV ages ago (I think) and still haven't watched it, I want to watch it even more now that I know it's based on a Neil Gaiman book.
