Kylie
Excellent haul of books there, Devi. I look forward to your thoughts on Game of Thrones. I've only watched a couple of eps of series 1 so far, and I have the book but find it intimidatingly large!
Athena
I look forward to your thoughts on Game of Thrones.x ^ what Kylie said. I've been thinking about reading it too but I might want to finish another fantasy series first, I'm not sure yet. I look forward to hear/read what you think of it. Karsa Orlong
Every time I've tried to reply to your book haul post the quote system has gone nuts on me and I've given up *sigh* Try again . . . Anyway, that's a lot of books! Under Heaven - Guy Gavriel Kay Have you read GGK before? The Ghost Brigades - John Scalzi I've read the previous book in the series, Old Man's War, but haven't got this one yet. Look forward to your thoughts on it Bones of the Hills - Conn Iggulden Blackout - Connie Willis I keep looking at these two but haven't bought them. I liked the first two of Iggulden's 'Conqueror' books. The First Collected Tales of Bauchelain & Korbal Broach - Steven Erikson Those stories are bonkers The Gabble - Neal Asher Prador Moon - Neal AsherImperium - Robert Harris Haven't read The Gabble yet, but Prador Moon is one of my favourite of Asher's books that I've read so far. It's an onslaught from start to finish I read Robert Harris's Lustrum without realising it was a sequel to Imperium. I still have the latter on my TBR list, but I thought Lustrum was blimmin' marvellous Next up... A Game of Thrones! I'm sure you'll love it! (Okay, not 'sure', but reasonably confident )
Devi
Every time I've tried to reply to your book haul post the quote system has gone nuts on me and I've given up *sigh* Try again . . . Anyway, that's a lot of books! Sorry about that I guess the forums couldn't handle such a large list! Have you read GGK before? No but I have always wanted too. Are there any you can recommend I read first? I've read the previous book in the series, Old Man's War, but haven't got this one yet. Look forward to your thoughts on it I didn't even know it was apart of a series. I will have to get the first one now. I keep looking at these two but haven't bought them. I liked the first two of Iggulden's 'Conqueror' books. Again, didn't know it was apart of a series. I thought it sounded interesting when I saw it in the shop, it was the free book in a buy one get one free offer. Those stories are bonkers Can you read this on its own before reading the series? Haven't read The Gabble yet, but Prador Moon is one of my favourite of Asher's books that I've read so far. It's an onslaught from start to finish The HC editions I got really caught my eye, are they book that can be read on there own? Or are they apart of a series. I read Robert Harris's Lustrum without realising it was a sequel to Imperium. I still have the latter on my TBR list, but I thought Lustrum was blimmin' marvellous Hard to keep up with all these series! It's one thing that sometimes gets me... I can't think of the word, but I am always having to double check books I like the look of, as I hate to read a series out of order. As you may have noticed, I didn't even see that half the books you mentioned were apart of a series. I thought most were all singles - especially Imperium. Athena
@series I always find it helpful if on the book cover itself (or at the inside of the book), it's mentioned what series it's in and which number # it is. @Guy Gavriel Kay I own three books by this author, look forward to hear what you, Karsa, answer to Devi's question. x I've read the previous book in the series, Old Man's War, but haven't got this one yet. Look forward to your thoughts on it x Did you like Old Man's War? I own it as an ebook but the Kindle doesn't seem to display PDF properly, the text is too small (I bought it as the Humble Ebook Bundle). I might have to see if Calibre can covert it, or whether it'd be worth it buying a paperback version of it. x Haven't read The Gabble yet, but Prador Moon is one of my favourite of Asher's books that I've read so far. It's an onslaught from start to finish x This sounds good. I was planning to read them in publication order, starting with Gridlinked from the Agent Cormac series (I thought that was at least the order they were supposed to be in.. I haven't looked at them in a while! I haven't been in a science-fiction mood much.. also I own much more fantasy, contemporary fiction and chick-lit books compared with science-fiction) @Devi I hope you enjoy your newly bought books ! Karsa Orlong
No but I have always wanted too. Are there any you can recommend I read first? I wouldn't say there are any you have to read first. Under Heaven is the one I've enjoyed least so far - but I think I was expecting too much from it, as I'd loved all the others I'd read so much. I read it in a bit of a rush, too, which was a mistake. I expect I'll enjoy it more on re-read, which I will do some time as he's got a sequel coming out later this year. I started with Tigana, which is closer to traditional fantasy than the others I've read. My favourite is The Lions of Al-Rassan. A Song for Arbonne and The Sarantine Mosaic are also brilliant. Be aware that the latter comprises two books: Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors. I didn't even know it was apart of a series. I will have to get the first one now. I did wonder if you knew! There are four novels so far, and one serialised. Old Man’s War (2005) The Ghost Brigades (2006) The Last Colony (2007) Zoe’s Tale (2008) The Human Division (electronic serial) Again, didn't know it was apart of a series. I thought it sounded interesting when I saw it in the shop, it was the free book in a buy one get one free offer. Free - until you have to buy the previous two books to catch up with the story . . . Can you read this on its own before reading the series? Yeah, I should think so. It's only a couple of characters who appeared in one of the novels. The settings and storylines are completely separate. The HC editions I got really caught my eye, are they book that can be read on there own? Or are they apart of a series. Well Prador Moon is a prequel to the whole series, so it shouldn't be a problem, and The Gabble is a collection of short stories. I suppose you might get more out of Prador Moon having read some of his other books (I read it after having read his 'Spatterjay' trilogy), but then the reverse is probably true as well. As you may have noticed, I didn't even see that half the books you mentioned were apart of a series. I thought most were all singles - especially Imperium. It's easy to do! I suppose it depends on the circumstances. If I see a book I like the looks of I tend, these days, to research the author before I buy. Lustrum taught me this Doesn't help if you're at a sale or whatever and need to make an instant decision, though.
Karsa Orlong
@series I always find it helpful if on the book cover itself (or at the inside of the book), it's mentioned what series it's in and which number # it is. Yes, it's annoying when it's not immediately apparent from the cover. It's a ploy, I expect - get you to buy a middle book from a series without knowing it, then you have to go and get the others before you can read it. @Guy Gavriel Kay I own three books by this author, look forward to hear what you, Karsa, answer to Devi's question. Which ones do you have, Athena? Did you like Old Man's War? I own it as an ebook but the Kindle doesn't seem to display PDF properly, the text is too small (I bought it as the Humble Ebook Bundle). I might have to see if Calibre can covert it, or whether it'd be worth it buying a paperback version of it. Yeah, I did like it. (Shameless self-promotion alert) I reviewed it here This sounds good. I was planning to read them in publication order, starting with Gridlinked from the Agent Cormac series (I thought that was at least the order they were supposed to be in.. I haven't looked at them in a while! I haven't been in a science-fiction mood much.. also I own much more fantasy, contemporary fiction and chick-lit books compared with science-fiction) Sounds sensible to read them in publication order. The Cormac books and the Spatterjay books are separate, just set in the same universe, so you could get away with starting on either series. Gridlinked is up next for me, too, when I've reduced my TBR list a bit . . .
Athena
Which ones do you have, Athena?x I have Tigana, Lord of Emperors and Ysabel. I've heard good things about this author so when I saw some of his books cheaply available I decided to go for it and buy them. I believe Ysabel is a standalone story if I remember correctly, I think the other two are part of series? (GoodReads will know). x Yeah, I did like it. (Shameless self-promotion alert) I reviewed it here x Thanks! Nice review . x Sounds sensible to read them in publication order. The Cormac books and the Spatterjay books are separate, just set in the same universe, so you could get away with starting on either series. Lord of Emperors is part two of the two-part 'Sarantine Mosaic'. I haven't read Ysabel, but I believe it's a sequel of sorts to his 'Fionovar' trilogy. ETA: The follow up to Under Heaven, River of Stars, is out on Kindle already But I'm not paying £12.99 for it Edited April 9, 2013 by Karsa Orlong
Devi
30 pages into a game of thrones (yeah I know, I should be reading more), and I have already noticed two differences when comparing it to the tv show, so far.Now I intend to stop watching anymore of the series till I am ahead of the show in the book. Karsa Orlong
^^ Wise move, I reckon. You'll be investing far more time in the books, probably, so better to be spoiler free
Devi
Well I have been trying to read as much as I can, but again my health has got in the way. Specialists, tests and a new medication. I was browsing my BD wishlist over the past couple of weeks (its almost 20 pages long) , and I've managed to add six to my cart so far... on one hand I'm tempted to purchase them, but on the other I feel guilty because I haven't read much of what I have now. Meanwhile my other wishlist (ones not yet added to BD), keeps on growing and growing.
Kylie
My BD wishlist has exploded this year and is also 20 pages long.
Devi
My local bookshop was having a 50% off sale on selected books, so I picked up three and they are: Lustrum - Robert Harris Gallipoli - John Masefield The Psychopath Test- Jon Ronson I'm still looking at books on bd, keep chopping and changing my cart. Edit: oh and I got the next book in the Dark Tower series, Wind Through the Keyhole - Stephen King. Edited May 29, 2013 by Devi

Devi
What have you made of Game of Thrones so far Devi? I really enjoyed the first in the series. Not bad, I am managing two chapters when I have enough energy to read. I kind of regret watching the first two seasons before starting the book though, I'm not as eager to read it like I normally would be. I just have to make it past what I have seen so far, and I think I will be right.
Athena
That makes sense, I've seen one season and I kind of feel the same. I'd like to read the books before seeing more of the show (I recently bought season two on Blu-ray) but they are big and there are so many nice books to read.. (I do would like to read the book though and see if it's similar to the tv show etc) I hope your energy will not get too low too often, that's not nice at all . Devi
That's great to hear ! Did you get anything you're particularly looking forward to reading? Yeah I got quite a few I have been wanting for awhile. I was concerned that if I waited any longer they may have been sold out or finished printing. Devi
I found a book while browsing the op shops and local book barn, I couldn't help myself but buy it and at .50c for what looksmlike a brand new book, how could I not? I got some other books too, but those can wait. The one I am talking about it is Science Fiction: The 101 Best Novels 1985 - 2010 by Broderick & Di Filippo This is it here, I do love the cover. synopsis from BD: Inspired by David Pringle's landmark 1985 work "Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels", this volume supplements the earlier selection with the present authors' choices for the best English-language science fiction novels during the past quarter century. Employing a critical slant, the book provides a discussion of the novels and the writers in the context of popular literature. Moreover, each entry features a cover image of the novel, a plot synopsis, and a mini review, making it an ideal go-to guide for anyone wanting to become reacquainted with an old favourite or to discover a previously unknown treasure. With a foreword by David Pringle, this invaluable reference is sure to provoke conversation and debates among sci-fi fans and devotees.
