  1. More than you`d think. Many, many more...
  2. It`s a whole mystery genre.
  3. Books bought recently : Murder Duet, Murder in Jerusalem, Murder on a Kibbutz, Bethlehem Road Murder, The Saturday Morning Murder - Batya Gur The Copenhagan Connection - Elizabeth Peters Plant Dreaming Deep - May Sarton Murder at Beechlands - Maureen Sarsfield I Remember Nothing - Nora Ephron The Mystery at Orchard House, Who Killed the Curate - Joan Coggin Early Riser - Jasper Fforde
  4. Those both look really good, but my criteria at the moment is ` Does it have cats in it ?!`
  5. I remembered that I read Robert Graves` Greek Mythology years ago. Maybe time for a re-read.
  6. I`m always amused by the sounds that animals make in different languages - like Cock-a-doodle-do for English cockerels, and kik-a-ree-ki for German ones.
  7. Thanks ! I really liked the EE Holmes books ( Spirit Legacy, etc ) and the two Gretchen Rubin self-help books. Any stand-outs for you so far ?
  8. #96 Wicked Autumn - GM Malliett #97 Milo`s Story - EE Holmes #98 Stand Up and Die - Richard and Frances Lockridge #99 Silent Night - Robert B Parker/Helen Brann #100 Ravencliffe - Carol Goodman #101 Ghostly Paws - Leighann Dobbs #102 Die Laughing - Richard Lockridge #103 Preach No More - Richard Lockridge #104 Literary Murder - Batya Gur #105 The Jane Austen Book Club - Karen Joy Fowler #106 Penelope Passes - Joan Coggin #107 Dancing with Death - Joan Coggin #108 Foggy, Foggy Death - Richard and Frances Lockridge Up to date - I`ve had such rotten migraines that I just haven`t felt like doing much reading ( I know it looks like I`m reading a lot, but I`m reading 1/3 of my usual amount ). The Lockridge books were good, and I really enjoyed the two Joan Coggin books ( Golden Age mysteries with vivid characters, clever plots and real depth to the stories ). Ghostly Paws could`vet done with a bit more characterisation of the minor characters, but I loved the lead character and the story - a bookshop owner investigates a murder in a town with Witchy secrets, plus there are cats. The ending was something unexpected and really fun. I`ve pre-ordered Leighann Dobbs` first book in a new series, A Spell of Trouble, for 99p. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trouble-Silver-Hollow-Paranormal-Mystery-ebook/dp/B01K29O0WC/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital- text&ie=UTF8&qid=1471103352&sr=1-1&keywords=a+spell+of+trouble Literary Murder was excellent, and I`ve ordered the rest of the series. Set in Israel, a murder takes place in a University. The writing is complex, and reminded me of Michael`s Dibdin Aurelio Zen books. I found it initially hard to get into - all the characters are introduced at once, during a seminar on poetry - but so rewarding.
  9. You can see Palmerston thinking " Wait till that photographer leaves... "
  10. Watching quite a bit of the Olympics ; yes, including a couple of swimming finals around 3 am ( the upside of insomnia ). The ladies' double sculls was just nail-biting today !
  11. Hee ! It's a public service, saving anyone from a bad read. Thanks for the self sacrifice.
  12. What a shame that SPQR wasn't better. off to look up Edith Hamilton !
  13. Pursuit of a Parcel - Patricia Wentworth is free today from Amazon. Sorry, no clicking cos I'm using my kindle atm. I've read 10 or so of her Miss Silver books and really like them.

  15. Episodes ! Yay ! I think I enjoy it far more than it deserves.
  16. Thanks ! Enjoy your first read !
  17. Thanks ! I read mostly female authors for mysteries, too.
  18. yes - if you have a multi-region DVD player, here`s the UK DVD for the China docu. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Story-China-DVD-Michael-Wood/dp/B01AV623KM/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1470575489&sr=1-1&keywords=michael+woods+china
  19. The China documentary was excellent; Michael Woods really came across as loving the Country, People and Culture. Just fascinating to learn so much about the various Eras. I've not seen any of Ken Burns' work, though obviously I'm aware of it. I think the docu series on jazz was his first one ?
  20. I have ; it's a good book, but after Citadel, it pales a bit. I'm glad I read it, though.
  21. Rats, couldn`t reply last night cos my Kindle Fire doesn`t do cut-and -paste. Anyway ! I`m planning to live to 160 - that way I can keep buying books and complete my TBR. Spare box for some reason ! Yes, like a cosy murder mystery which has stuff about Finnish culture in it ? Though I just found your Finnish Culture thread last night... If you could throw in a country house mystery as well ??
  22. Your ` miserable` book looks amusing. Are you going to read your Gretchen Rubin book in one go or month by month ? Or both ? I`m starting my monthly re-read next month of Happier at Home.
  23. I`d think you`d get more from the book than the TV series ; it was only 3 x 1hr and while I liked it, there are TV docus which I`ve liked more ( Michael Woods on China, Bettany Hughes and Mary Beard on most things ).
  24. I quite enjoyed Sepulchre when I read it a few years ago, but it wasn't as good as the brilliant Labyrinth ,imo.
