  1. Beautiful bookmarks! I can see already that I need to invest in something like this. I've always just used the free ones I get at Half Price Books or ones I got on sale while working at the Museum Company.
  2. I'm in Minnesota, Bethany, born and raised. I hope you get to go to Singapore or Sydney, those both sound like wonderful locations to be!

    hello

Hello and welcome, rwemad! Glad you found the board. Are you a big Stephen King fan? I used to read him many years ago, back in the 80's with stuff like Carrie, Christine, Shining, etc. Love that stuff!
  4. Hiya Bethany and welcome! I'm sure you'll have lots of fun here - everyone is very friendly! I'm somewhat new here too and live in the U.S. Good luck in Bombay and wherever you head next!
  5. I love working on my family tree too, BL! I've only been doing it for the past few years, but it's so interesting! Hopefully one day I'll be able to finish the book I'm putting together for all my family members. I have a pretty diverse tree, but just in the last few months I've been getting really far back in my English line and am learning a lot Do you have any in your family that came to the US?
  6. Nellie- when I do beading it's pretty much just making different kinds of jewelry (mostly bracelets & earrings) with wire and little beads. Sometimes people buy flexible wire that you string the beads on, other times you bend the wire and make little links that you connect, which is what I tend to do. I've seen people use leather and other kinds of cord too. It's fun, but can get expensive; the beads, wire, cord, clasps, spacers, etc can add up!
  7. Reading, of course, and studying anything to do with art (I go to the local museum a lot), also beading, working on my family ancestry, drinking lots of coffee, hanging out with my cat Sascha, watching Gilmore Girls and West Wing on dvd, creating stationery/cards and cooking. Oh, and music is a pretty big thing, listening though not creating, lol.
  8. It's late and I'm tired, but the only thing that comes to mind for me right now is The Little Friend by Donna Tartt. The whole book was a big disappointment for me, but especially the ending. Never before have I had so many questions at the end of a book. It was soon after it came out that I read it (a few years ago now) but I distinctly remember actually writing down all the unanswered issues that I had questions on. It made me angry in fact, but that was compounded because I had waited 10 years since her first and only other book which I absolutely loved, A Secret History.
  9. I like to do beading too, although mostly bracelets and earrings since I never have enough patience to work on long necklaces, lol. We have one large bead shop here in town but it seems to get more expensive every time I go! I keep telling myself I should find some cheaper mail-order place but I like seeing the beads with my own eyes instead of online. Other than that I like to create cards and stationery. Not so much into stamping them, but using handmade papers, etc.
  10. I'm very behind on the movie front! Here in the states I saw that 'The Dutchess' and 'Burn After Reading' are already out on DVD, so hopefully soon I'll be able to rent them. I would also love to see 'Frost/Nixon,' 'In Bruges,' 'Iron Man,' 'The Reader,' and 'Rockinrolla.' (sp?) As far as new movies, I would love to see 'Benjamin Button,' 'Milk' and 'Doubt.' David Fincher is a favorite of mine, as is Philip Seymour Hoffman. I'm sure I'll think of other movies that I want to see after I post this, lol.
  11. This is a sore subject with me, lol. It's so disappointing when I have a book I love, and it gets turned into some mess on screen. I have a hard time remembering that some books just can't be perfectly duplicated on film, so lately I have just taken to not seeing films if it's from a book I really loved. My most hated films from books - The Shining (shame on you Stanley Kubrick!), Circle of Friends (perfect casting w/Minnie Driver, but that's where the positive commentary ends), Count of Monte Cristo (several film versions, all bad). Interestingly enough, 2 of Stephen King's short stories were made into wonderful films, imo. The Body aka Stand By Me and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption aka The Shawshank Redemption. Oh, and I never read Jaws, but I LOVE the film (one of my faves). Has anyone read it and if so was it better than the film?

    Hi :)

Heya, Biffo!! Welcome, welcome to the forum
  13. I know the current season of Ghost Hunters just ended, but I'm already missing it! I'll have to be somewhat satisfied with the guys from Ghost Hunters International in the meantime, until the new season of GH with the lovely Jason and Grant starts up again in March. I'm also excited for Psych and Monk - gotta love those. Oooohhh, can I pretend and be excited for a new season of Gilmore Girls and West Wing?! Even though those shows are officially over and won't have any new episodes, I can dream, can't I? I hate the way they both ended and I want a fantasy final season! I guess that's what fan fiction is for...
  14. Great thread! 1. I love going to the local art museum, and anytime I travel I that is usually the first thing I do or one of my main reasons for traveling to a certain destination. 2. I will watch any documentary on TV that has to do with underwater animals - Shark Week is my fave! 3. I am continually working on a book about my complete family history/ancestry. 4. I go to sleep every night listening to a thunderstorm CD. 5. I am a coffee fiend, and am at my happiest when it is accompanied by a warm raspberry scone.
  15. Always before bed, but if I'm really into a book I'll bring it to work with me and read over lunch. Otherwise if it hasn't been one of my 9/10 hour work days I'll read anytime when I get home.
  16. Fried ravioli with marinara sauce! Yumm... Saw it on Giada's show a few months ago and have made it once since then. Thought I'd do a repeat tonight since I forgot to take something out of the freezer this morning
  17. No, probably not. He played locally here for most of his life, and before that he was in Southern Cal in the 50's but just getting started. I've heard some fun stories though of him seeing some greats while in LA way back when.
  18. Thanks! Julie's great. I started listening to her quite a few years ago when my mom dug out all her old albums. I grew up around this stuff since my dad was a jazz musician, but of course I never fully appreciated it until I left home. Silly kid!
  19. Julie London - Ultra-Lounge Series Vol. 5: Wild, Cool & Swingin' Bill Evans - California Here I Come Both excellent CDs. Evans has really good versions of 'On Green Dolphin Street' and 'Emily.'
  20. I pretty much listen to anything with the exception of rap. My first love is jazz (traditional, not experimental), and I also like 60s/70s rock, showtunes, vocal/instrumental standards and some alternative rock. I have a huge place in my heart for anything Red Hot Chili Peppers and Chris Cornell (Soundgarden/Audioslave included), and oh, classical too. To name a few of my jazz/standards faves: Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker, Bill Evans, Vince Guaraldi, Michael Buble, Frank Sinatra, Jane Monheit, Diana Krall, Julie London, Charlie Parker, Dave Brubeck, Gerry Mulligan, Johnny Mercer, Cole Porter, Oscar Peterson and Shorty Rogers.
  21. Had a very nice Thanksgiving yesterday, with all the traditional fare... turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, gravy, and three kinds of pie! I think I look forward to the leftovers even more than the main meal, lol. I never go out on Black Friday here. There's too many people, and no deal is worth getting mobbed by crazed shoppers! There is even a local outlet mall here that opened at midnight last night, and they were mobbed with people! Wayyyy back in 1995 I was in London over the holiday. We went to Harrod's on the day that Black Friday fell in the states, and it was crammed with shoppers. I know you don't celebrate Thanksgiving like we do, but is that day sort of a universal busy day around the world for Christmas shopping, or is Harrod's just always crazy busy?!
  22. Hard to narrow it down to three, but here goes: 1. Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas 2. Tale of Two Cities - Charles Dickens 3. Little Women - Louisa May Alcott
  23. This may sound silly, but I discovered Panco bread crumbs a few weeks ago. A friend and I made this AMAZING Scallops Gratin recipe we saw the Barefoot Contessa do on the Food Network and it was delicious! Since then I've used Panco in many recipes that normally would have called for traditional bread crumbs.
  24. Some are on a fancy book shelf in my living room, which I reserve only for hard-covers and big coffee table books. The rest are on 3 big bookshelves in my bedroom, 2 small bookshelves in my bedroom closet and on top of and in the drawer of my nightstand.
  25. I am slowly but surely working my way through this book. Sometimes my work days are long so at night I just don't have the stamina to concentrate on it. I hate to read something if I know I'm not paying attention, because obviously with this book paying attention is very important! I'm enjoying it very much thus far though, and this is my first vampire novel as well.
