  1. I'm afraid I don't have many valuable books left monetarily-wise, thanks to an ex-downstairs neighbor who started a fire in my old apt building. I do have 2 signed first editions of Matthew Pearl's first 2 books however so maybe one day they'll mature in value. Sentimentally-wise I have 2 old books of my dad's, King's Row and The Fountainhead. I also have a very old book on horses of my grandmother's, who was a great horsewoman herself.
  2. Last night I made a really good white bean/garlic soup and tossed some of my yummy homemade croutons on top. Also had some spinach since I guess it's good for me, lol. Tonight I'm not sure since I'm going out to eat after work and we haven't decided where to go yet.
  3. Ella is the queen of all, Ophelia, glad you like her!! I heard a little bit of this band called Bishop Allen last night and LOVED them! Does anyone know anything about them and can share??
  4. Hello and welcome, Bookjumper! Glad you found us . I hope the Fforde books are coming along well for you. I read the first one many years ago and loved it so hopefully I'll read the others one of these days. I keep buying them up when I'm at the used book shop and I think I just need one more. Again, welcome!
  5. Welcome, Genevieve! Glad you found us and I hope you have fun here .
  6. I alternate between cereal/fruit, english muffin/jam (my sister makes a delicious pomegranate jam) or scrambled eggs with cheese. Obscene amounts of coffee to go with all of the above as well, lol. My fave breakfast is probably an omelet oozing w/cheese and veggies and some really crispy bacon on the side. Oh, and coffee and a warm scone of course. If any of you ever find yourself in Sugar Hill, New Hampshire in the future, the best pancake breakfast I've ever had in my life was at 'Polly's Pancake Parlour.' Yummy NH syrup and really fluffy cakes!
  7. Ditto to all of the above, Dan! Although I still listen to Soundgarden and RHCP almost daily Rent is a great show. I also can never get enough of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Into the Woods.
  8. Having leftovers tonight from what I made last night, which is one of my all time favorite recipes. Baked chicken with veggies, orzo pasta and terrifically-melty fontina cheese. YUM! Anytime you combine white wine with chicken, garlic, butter and cheese I am there!
  9. Hardest I've ever bawled while reading a book was Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. Such sadness and it really got to me! Recently I cried near the end of The Historian, which kind of surprised me. Even while I was talking to my friend about it at work after I finished the book I started to get teary-eyed!
  10. I'm excited to read this now after reading these last few pages of comments! I bought it for only .50 at my library book sale a couple of weekends ago and now am glad I know what I'm going to read after my next book.
  11. Stopped at the store on the way home from work today and treated myself to a frozen pizza. Nice treat, eh? Well it was cheap and it'll give me leftovers for lunch tomorrow, so I can't lose.
  12. Scallops gratin for me tonight, YUMMM! Quite a treat (since scallops are kind of pricey) that I drool over starting about a week in advance. Basically it's scallops, white wine, butter, garlic, parsley, s&p with Panco breadcrumbs, all broiled together into a golden heavenly dish!
  13. Elated that Kate Winslet won and that's pretty much all I was elated about, lol. Disappointed that The Reader didn't win best picture, that Frank Langella didn't win best actor for Frost/Nixon and that Philip Seymour Hoffman didn't win best supporting actor for Doubt. Oh well.
  14. Does anyone here live in or near Kent? All this talk about fish-n-chips just reminds me about a really good meal of it I had once wayyyy back in 1995 at a pub there very near Leeds Castle. It was just so good, and still sticks in my memory as part of such an amazing vacation I had there. Tonight it's leftover Lebanese cuisine for me. I can hardly wait to get home and have some it's so good!
  15. Any Temple of the Dog on there, O's? All Night Thing is a an absolute MUST!
  16. I'm of two minds about this. I like paperbacks because they're small and easy to read no matter where you are (bed, public transportation, under a tree, lol), plus the fact that they are easier on the wallet. However some hardcovers have such nicely designed dust jackets and look much better on a book shelf. Plus, if there is a book out there that I loved and really treasure, I want to spend the money and have something more substantial to show my appreciation.
  17. I vote for historical mysteries!! That's really my all time fave genre, but it wasn't a category so I chose historical fiction.
  18. It ended up to be a dismal late dinner for me last night of coffee and a semi-ok scone while I waited for my eyebrow appt, then when I got home I had some popcorn and a cheese stick. Yay me! Tonight I'm heading to the local Lebanese deli and I'm so glad because I have been craving their babaghanoush for the last 2 weeks! Does anyone here get to see the show on the Food Network called 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives?' This deli was featured on there a few months ago and I've been going there for as long as I can remember. Anyway, I'll be having a delicious dinner of babghanoush, kibbi, tabouli salad and bread. YUMMMM!
  19. Will not get home until after 8pm tonight so I'm afraid I'll just have to grab a coffee and whatever pastry isn't looking all dried up after sitting in the case all day, lol. Then probably popcorn when I get home and turn on...Oh NO! I forgot to set the VCR to record the Mentalist! Sorry, Simon
  20. Am either going to make chicken soup tonight or taco salad... not sure. Depends on how I feel after such a long day.
  21. Sounds yummy, Lucybird! I'm meeting an old college friend for dinner tonight and (don't laugh) we're going to Claddagh Irish Pub. Obviously, it's not authentic, what with being in the middle of a frozen American suburb, but they have really good food there . I know, I need to try the real thing!!
  22. Hope you enjoy your hummus, Bethany! I just made a batch earlier this week and have been snacking every since, lol. Giada made a really good looking veggie/olive/sundried tomato salad last weekend. Here's the recipe if anyone wants it: 1/3 cup olive oil, plus 3 tablespoons 5 oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, drained and finely chopped 2 tablespoons pitted small black olives, such as kalamata, halved 2 tablespoons halved pitted green olives 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme Kosher salt for seasoning, plus 1/2 teaspoon Freshly ground black pepper 3 shallots, thinly sliced 1 zucchini, ends trimmed and discarded, cut into 1/2-inch rounds 1 yellow summer squash, ends trimmed and discarded, cut into 1/2-inch rounds 1 small red bell pepper, cored, seeded and cut into 1/4-inch strips Directions: In a medium bowl, whisk together 1/3 cup olive oil, sun-dried tomatoes, olives, and thyme. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. In a medium skillet, heat remaining 3 tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat. Add the shallots and cook until translucent and tender, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the zucchini, yellow squash, red bell pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring frequently, for 6 to 8 minutes until the vegetables are tender. Add the warm vegetables to the oil mixture and toss until coated. Transfer the vegetables to a serving bowl. Serve immediately.
  23. Dinner tonight at mom's... I think she said we're having walleye and what you all call jacket potatoes YUM! Oh and probably something green to go along with it. Hopefully there'll be leftovers for me to take home!
  24. Jane's Addiction Temple of the Dog Soundgarden Stone Temple Pilots Red Hot Chili Peppers The Black Keys Mott the Hoople Queen
  25. I finished this a few days ago and must say I really enjoyed it. I'm glad I picked it up and to tell you the truth, had I not read the posts here about the time-period issue I don't even know that I would have noticed it. I think vehicles were mentioned, but other than that it was kind of nice not to read about the internet and cell phones (or even regular phones for that matter). Writing letters, old book shops and big estates just seemed to go together so well! I will definitely look for more from Setterfield.
