  1. That's right! Movie police, pfft! Sometimes we just have to have guilty pleasures, right? You've never seen Mae as a little girl in the movie 'Hope Floats,' Frankie? She was excellent, and at such a young age! I learned about a new book that Iain Pears as written called Arcadia, which is coming out in September. I'm so looking forward to it! He hasn't had a book out since 2009, I think .
  2. Stormy here this morning, now it's partly sunny and apparently very humid outside. Boo! I guess we'll see when I walk out to my car in about an hour and a half...
  3. It was pretty formulaic and predictable, but I must admit there was something about it I enjoyed. Mae Whitman, obviously not fat (just wearing baggy clothes), was really funny - something I didn't know about her! I might have to give the book a try for something light. I'm also a wee bit shallow in that I liked the guy who played Wesley so that was another reason I watched it...
  4. Was a film made of this book by chance? I watched it this weekend so it's still rolling around in my brain I didn't get a ton of reading in this weekend. I managed maybe 10% of Puritan Witch: The Redemption of Rebecca Eames. Good stuff!
  5. Two vastly different suggestions but 2 of my most favorite books I've read in a very long time: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them. But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape. The Last Runaway by Tracy Chevalier Ohio 1850. For a modest English Quaker stranded far from home, life is a trial. Untethered from the moment she leaves England, fleeing personal disappointment, Honor Bright is forced by family tragedy to rely on strangers in an alien, untamed landscape. Drawn into the clandestine activities of the Underground Railroad, a network helping runaway slaves escape to freedom, Honor befriends two exceptional people who embody the startling power of defiance. Eventually she must decide if she too can act on what she believes in, whatever the personal cost.
  6. Paula, Paula, Paula! Love your reviews, my friend! My wish list is growing, thanks to you. Lies in the Dust reminded me to ask you if you've read Conversion? It's by Katherine Howe and is an excellent story told from both Ann Putnam's and a present day girl's perspectives. Highly recommend!
  7. Hey, Elisa, and welcome! Ooooh is that Matt Bellamy I see in your avatar? Nice choice
  8. Excellent reviews as always, Noll! I've added The Monstrumologist to my wish list at Amazon and can't wait to read it!
  9. Cool-ish and mostly cloudy threatening rain. Very blah.
  10. Hey there and welcome to BCF, Catherine! Glad to have you
  11. Is this the same Rick Yancey who wrote the 5th Wave books? If so I'll definitely be checking out The Monstrumologist, Noll! Plus the fact that it comes highly recommended, obviously
  12. Hope your appointments went well this week, Muggle! Have fun at your library event, Athena, and you too at your US History class, Anna! It's such an interesting topic and I would love to take a class. You'll have to let us know how it goes! I had to have some unexpected work done on my car last week right before I left for the cabin so that was not fun. I went in for a simple oil change and left with 2 new tires, a new battery, and new front brakes (not to mention being almost $800 poorer ) I had a really nice time up north, though, and got all the yard work done plus hang out with the family. Now the week is half over - man does time fly!
  13. I've walked away from a few shows in the past, mostly because I hated what the writers were doing with the characters or sometimes just from a lack of time on my part. I don't have a lot of free hours in my day so shows I don't love get cut. I'll admit that I turned the channel on what I assumed was the last scene of the GoT finale because I didn't want to see what I think happened happen. I know in my mind what went down but, you know, I'll just exercise my right to the Schrodinger's Cat principle Until next season!
  14. Yay!! I'm so glad you read a Flavia book and enjoyed it You got me into the Dragonslayer books and I got you started on Flavia - now that's what I call fitting in!
  15. Wow, Muggle, thank you for that! I will definitely be making that this weekend and also stopping at HD for one of those sprayers. I'm sure my mom will be excited to hear about it too since she hates seeing her garden eaten up. Since there are no chemicals I'm assuming it's okay to have around the dog? Not that she'd want to try it, but you never know
  16. I hope your back starts to feel better soon, Chrissy! I'm sorry again about Holly, Noll. It was so lovely you got to spend all that time with her at the end It's been a busy week again at work but I'm off on Friday and am heading north to the lake. The dock is going in today and the boat comes tomorrow so it's just in time! Unfortunately I also have to make time for yard work and putting in a little fencing around the flower beds. The deer up there are wild about my hosta
  17. Great news on the Riggs book, Paula and Kylie, thank you! Paula also mentioned to me Ernest Cline's new book, Armada, due out in July. Yippee!! I can't wait for it!!
  18. I saw St. Vincent over the weekend and it was excellent! I never get tired of watching Bill Murray on screen.
  19. Yay! I'm so excited to hear about your thoughts on the rest of this series, Muggle! (And so glad you got your reading mojo back ) I've been busy lately so haven't progressed very far in book #2, but I hope to make a dent this weekend. Have you ever read any of Alan Bradley's books from the Flavia de Luce series? They are mysteries set in 1950's England and she is another young protagonist who is wonderfully written. They are also funny, to boot, and I would highly recommend .
  20. Breaking out the grill tonight for the season Sweet Italian turkey sausages are in order... Mmmm.
  21. Binge watching is always a great idea, Kylie
  22. I'm so sorry, Noll That is one of the hardest things to go through and I really feel for you all and your dog. Many comforting vibes are on the way as we speak.
  23. Ditto! Best looking episode I've seen in a long time! Lord Commander Snow was fab!
  24. Sounds lovely, Athena, wish I could do the same with my dad Had a great Zumba class last night - so great that I'm glad I have tonight off to recover! Ha! I'll be back at it tomorrow night, though, and Saturday I'll be planting flowers. My friends and I are also getting together to have dinner and watch the Belmont Stakes. Sunday i'll continue the yard work and I'm also going to my last belly dancing class since it's not held during the summer. I'll miss it
  25. While I was on my trip I finished The Last Dragonslayer: The Chronicles of Kazam, book 1, and started book 2, The Song of the Quarkbeast, both by Jasper Fforde. Thank you for turning these on to me, Muggle! I love them! I also started reading Puritan Witch: The Redemption of Rebecca Eames by Peni Jo Renner. It's historical fiction but is about my 9th great-grandmother so it's fascinating!
