Tim's Horror, Fantasy and Sci-Fi Reads from 2012
Timstar replied to Timstar's topic in Past Book Logs
Doubtful, I have so many other Sci-Fi's to read atm. -
Go for it! It is especially good for non-linear series such as Sharpe and James Bond etc.

I was wondering if anyone else has used this website? The sole purpose of it is to keep track of your book series. I know a lot of you will use Goodreads or something similar but I found this one great due to it's simplicity, you just click 'follow' on a series of author and it will add it to your series list. When you have read one simply click 'read' and it will automatically tell you which is the next in the series with some basic info as well. I didn't realise how many series I had and want to have til I started. Also tells you when a new series or book in a series on your list is coming out. www.fictfact.com I am only promoting it because I find it genuinely helpful and I think others here will as well (they aren't paying me). Enjoy!

Tried reading Forever Peace by Joe Haldeman, A companion novel to The Forever War,I got about 50 pages in and nothing was happening, I couldn't tell you what they were doing or why, I didn't even know which planet it was on... so I gave up. Think I will read Rose Madder by King next. Also about 35 hours into the audio version of The Stand by Stephen King which is nothing shy of brilliance. -
Darling, Delectable, Delicious Dexter

Finally saw the pilot episode of Dexter! Quite enjoyed it, as did the Wife looking forward to some more.... plus another 6 series -
Also love Anderson, The Darjeeling Limited is still my favourite. I'm interesting in seeing Lincoln, let us know what you think of it. Just watched Chronicle, I quite enjoyed it which I wasn't really expecting too, it started off quite slow and a bit annoying but the second half was much better and made great use of the 'found footage' subgenre. At only 80 mins I would recommended for a short evening film.

Read Odd and the Frost Giants by Neil Gaiman, which was an interesting short read. Also read Band of Brothers by Stephen E. Ambrose, it was good and gave some very interesting and moving accounts of E companies experience. I really liked how it followed one company from it's original formation through its various campaigns to Hitler's Eagle Nest. Unfortunately because of this style a lot of the events were not put into context with the rest of the war, a simple sentence here or there to state what else was happening at the same time in the rest of the world would have been a big help. I also noticed quite a bit of bias from the American author, he makes it sound like every American is hero fighting for freedom and liberty (surprisingly no mention of the segregated army) whilst every German is an evil oppressor. He even makes the allies sound useless and incompetent. Occasionally he mentions an American failing, bad judgement or atrocity but this is quickly followed by excuses and justifications. I did a quick Google search straight after finishing it to see if others thought this and apparently there is a lot of evidence that Ambrose was frequently inaccurate with falsifications and even plagiarism. I don't know whether this applies to Band of Brothers or not but most of his evidence seems to be based on the relocation of 70 year old veterans of E Company, whether that makes it more reliable or less reliable I won't judge. But there are certainly no accounts from any other company that either fought with them or against them. Overall it is a moving experience but needs to be taken with a large pinch of salt and I wouldn't recite any historical facts from it. I don't think I will be reading any more Ambrose.

I enjoyed it! not perfect by any means but it was good. It did have a few silly moments but the overall tone didn't feel silly. It is visually amazing as expected, but not the most faithful of adaptations, but I guess we were also expecting that.

Had my christmas work do last night in one of the Cambridge colleges, free food and wine all day with a disco at the end.... I may have done Gangnam Style...

I have my tickets for tomorrow, the Wife is a huge Lord of the Rings fan and she won't let me wait any longer. I am not reading any reviews at all, people will always be critical given that LOTR is so loved and popular and they have adapted what is essentially a childrens book into over 8 hours of screen time. Though to be fair I am not expecting too much, it has to have been dragged out a bit to make up 3 films and I am not a fan of Martin Freeman, I also thought the trailers looked a bit silly and almost slapstick. But I aim to be pleasantly surprised. I am really looking forward to it

Moonrise Kingdom, finally. Really good! Up to his usual standard, highly recommended, especially if you liked Royal Tenanbuams or his other films.
-
Finished From Russia With Love which was really good! Still reading through Band of Brothers, and just bought Manhatten in Reverse by Peter F. Hamilton in the Kindle Daily Deal
-
Starting reading From Russia With Love by Ian Fleming, still reading Band of Brothers as well which is brilliant!

Finished A Storm of Swords: Steel and Snow, I won't write a review as I can't say much about it without spoilers. It was amazing, my favourite in the series so far, even though it's only half a novel... at 600 pages though it didn't feel like it! -
Watched Flowers of War which was simply amazing! Everyone should see it, very moving and beautiful. also watched No Strings Attached which was a bit boring to be honest.
-
Tremors is brilliant!! Don't let anyone tell you differently.
-
Had a quick break from A Storm of Swords to read Sharpe's Fury which was great fun as always

Forgot I wrote this... I now work in Medical research. I'm a research technician at the MRC Epidemiology unit in Cambridge.

I don't mind lagging in the middle of a book, I would expect it with books 400 pages+ but some reviews of the series were saying that 2 or 3 books in a row were completely lagging and nothing happened so they gave up. I am still tempting to give this a go though, I was thinking of the getting the first book in audio to listen to.

Listening to the audio version of The Stand at the moment by Stephen King, it is fantastic! Not only one of King's best but very well narrated, he really brings the characters to life and grabs your attention, which at approaching 50 hrs long is a good thing!

Did you find a lag in the middle of the series?

Horns - Joe Hill Synopsis Ignatius Perrish spent the night drunk and doing terrible things. He woke up the next morning with one hell of a hangover, a raging headache . . . and a pair of horns growing from his temples. Now Ig is possessed with a terrible new power - with just a touch he can see peoples' darkest desires - to go with his terrible new look, and he means to use it to find the man who killed Merrin and destroyed his life. Being good and praying for the best got him nowhere. It's time for a little revenge; it's time the devil had his due. Review Horns is the second novel by Joe Hill, it is a thrilling read but not as good as his debut. I found the concept very original and enticing, in effect the Horns causes people he talks with to tell him what they are really thinking, the darkest thoughts going through their mind. As Ig is suspected of murder by almost everyone he knows, these dark thoughts tend to be what they really think of him. This provided some brilliant dark humour that left me laughing out loud when I know I shouldn't have been. The characters are great, even the minor ones are very relate-able, which helps to put you in Ig shoes and I was left wondering what I would do had this happened to me, how I would react to what the people I know and love really thought of me. Unfortunately this is where the good points end, the middle of the book was mostly taken up with flashbacks regarding his girlfriend's murder, most of which was unnecessary and and bit boring. The ending was better but it steered away from the original concept too much which made the book interesting in the first place. I believe it would have benefited a lot from being a bit shorter with some trimmings in the middle. An enjoyable read but nothing ground breaking. Overall 7/10 An adaptation is currently being filmed with Daniel Radcliffe as Ig, I wouldn't have high hopes but it will be interesting to see how it is done. Here is a picture of him with the horns. -
It started playing everyday on TV other here and I am only a few episodes behind. Don't worry though I will be having a break soon for a while. Wouldn't want to leave you hanging!

Freeway, a bizarre B-movie with Kiefer Sutherland and Reese Witherspoon based around Little Red Riding Hood.
