Devi I read a John Green book not long ago called Paper Towns . I liked it a lot . I'm like you, I don't do romance books . This one had a small amount of the teenage boyfriend/girlfriend thing, but not enough to mess up the story .
-
Karen I'm glad you finished the book, but sorry you didn't enjoy it more. I had sort of the same feelings when I read Atonement by the same author . It had the makings of a good story but kinda left you feeling a bit deflated at the end or something . Maybe an anticlimax ? I don't even remember much of what it was about now, but I remember thinking it was missing something . Good luck with your next book !

Yep, Michelle We all tend to like different things, and some books just don't float my boat . I'm usually pretty vocal about it even if it's a popular book with everyone else . I tend not to follow the crowd with my reading , and also I think I have odd reading tastes for a lady. There are lots of books that ladies would like that I don't . I think a lot of books I enjoy would be more popular with men . I DID like Rebecca ,but I'm sure there's lots of people who wouldn't enjoy it at all .

I am excited for you and Charlie to both read the whole Lonesome Dove set . You can go in any order you want ,but I think LD is by far the best, only for the fact that you get to know the characters really well in it . All of them are good , since McMurtry doesn't know how to write a bad book . I LOVE Gus .. he is my all time favorite . CUTE and so funny !!! Muggle Can you remember what the Latin words he had on the sign stood for ? I had to look it up once as I couldn't remember ,

Michelle Just to jump in here and say I agree with you about the Haunting on Hill House book. I never understood what all the hype was about . I ,too, found it kinda pointless and really not very impressive , but that's just my opinion . Hope you find some other books you like more ! I saw that the Hollow City book was out. waiting to hear how some of you guys like it before buying it .

Oxfordshire - The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford
julie replied to chesilbeach's topic in English Counties Challenge
Kay I loved that book . Back many years ago I bought a paperback that had Pursuit of Love & Love in a Cold Climate both in it . I did the same as you : opened the book, and was snagged from page one . Very good books. I also liked the humor . Made them so much more enjoyable ! Great review . -
Kate I figured you'd eventually cave in and buy a few books . No big deal, though. You did very well ! Especially since part were pre-orders . Glad you picked up the McMurtry books. Do you have all 4 in the set now ? And did you say you had Read LD before ? I'd agree with Muggle , LD would probably stand out as the best ,but they won't be in order that way . It's ok ,though, because I think you'll get to know the main characters much better starting with it, then going back and reading the others in order . I've read all but one ( first one in the series, Comanche Moon ,) ,but have them all on my Kindle and would like to read them all again in order this time . You're in for a treat if you have yet to read them !

Kate Stoner is another I've had my eye on for quite awhile now . Have yet to buy it, but it's been DANGLING around on my wish list for quite awhile now . Maybe someday .
-
Anna Yes, your content transfers to any device you register in your name . I've had several different Kindles , but the only 2 I use now are the Fire and the Paperwhite , which I like better for reading . It's much lighter .
-
Muggle I agree with you. I also have a fire and love it for videos , internet ,etc. I do use it for reading at times , if my Paperwhite is charging up or if I'm reading a book with pictures (rarely) , because the photos show up better on it . I like all the Kindles I've had ,for all different reasons . They've all been nice , and amazon is the best .

Kate Stegner is a great writer, isn't he ? I have yet to finish a book by him. Not sure why. No good excuse. I've started Angle of Repose numerous times and love the writing. I guess it's just bad timing and wasn't in the mood to stick with it . Will definitely try it again soon. Thanks for the reminder !

What are your reading plans for the year?
julie replied to Michelle's topic in General Book Discussions
Hi Zumii Enjoy your Paperwhite . Sounds like you are stacking books up on it like I do mine. It's pretty addicting ,isn't it ? -
Hi paperplane Will be excited to see what books you pick this year. I see you have a lot of true crime there .which is always my favorite . I haven't read any for awhile now, though . Time to start one again soon , I think ! Happy Reading this year .

How'd you burn your hands, Devi ? Are you ok ?
-
Anna You can go onto your main (home) page on your Paperwhite . When you open it up, at the top there's a narrow bar of little icons . You can click on the one that looks like a little magifying glass, and a keyboard will come up on the bottom of the screen so you can type in a title, author, etc to see if you have the book .Then click on it to open it . They also have a place to do Collections on it, so you can divide your books by genre, alphabetical lists, etc, however you want to divide them which would make it much easier to locate a specific book rather than having them all listed separately . Just an idea ! On the right ( under the main toolbar, there is a place that you can touch to see items by author, title ,recent, or collections . To put them into collections, click on the top right corner where the little lines are , click on Create Collection . Then the keyboard comes up and you can type in what your first collection will be. Type that in,then click on a book you want in it ,click on Add to Colllection and Save at the3 bottom . If this is too confusing ,holler and I'll explain it better . And Yes, Amazon Customer Service gets an A PLUS . Excellent .

Yea, we don't get cable here but if we did there might be lots of other western shows on . This channel is just free . It's too bad they don't make as many westerns now ,since your dad probably has seen tons of them if he's watched them for so many years . How about youtube ? Do they have a computer ? There are channels on there that also have lots of westerns on them . Just an idea .
-
Pixie Was the man a neighbor ,or someone you didn't know ? That's pretty scarey !
-
Noll Of course, we'll take you back ! Everyone has a rough patch once in awhile ,so don't feel guilty about it . Welcome back . I'm sure everyone will be glad to see you .
-
Kay Oh ,that would be nice for him then if he gets books delivered to his house to listen to . Too bad he can't choose specific types of books, or maybe they just don't have a lot of westerns on audio . Not sure what selections they have here for audio books at the library . I'm sure it's nice for him and helps him pass the time, especially since he loves westerns . We've been watching an old one that's on every night : The Rifleman. It was on when I was a kid, and we found a channel that plays 2 shows of it every night . I think they have westerns on all day Saturdays too, but I rarely watch tv in the daytime ,so not sure what all is on that channel . Do they have any oldies type tv stations over there that have all the old westerns ? He'd love it if they did .

Great news, Devi !!!
-
Kate It sure does sound nice down there ,and best to live far away from all the traffic and people. I like it where it's nice and quiet . KM Yes, I'd say I was never much of a "cowboy" fan myself, but I grew up watching the tv shows of it, which were very popular back then . I'd probably never read a western book until Lonesome Dove, and found I enjoyed it a lot , so have read some others since then that were also really good .
-
Yes, I think since it's your challenge ,then you can set it however you want . You're doing great and learning a lot about other places so I'm sure it's interesting . You can travel without leaving your chair !
-
Kay Really interesting book review . I just put the same 2 books on my reserve list at the library .
-
Wow, Anna A trip to Disneyland and 100 bucks to spend on books ! Sounds like quite a good time !
-
KM Sorry to hear about your dad. I know you'll treasure all the time you have yet to visit with him . You deserved to get out a bit by yourself and go book shopping .We all need that time to gather ourselves when life gets difficult .
