  2. I'm not a parent but you mentioned Terry Pratchett so I felt the need to join in Since he likes Terry Pratchett you could try getting him 'Good Omens' which is written by both him and Neil Gaiman. That's the book that got me interested in Gaiman Also what about 'nineteen eighty four' if he likes Orwell? I've always been more a fan of fantasy too and I really think he'll branch out to different genres on his own if he loves reading. A lot of books don't fit neatly into one genre anyway, there can be fantasy mixed in with horror or with mystery etc. then you start becoming interested in books with those elements and branching out. I think it's great that you play skyrim together! I love that game but my parents wouldn't even know how to turn the xbox ON!
  3. I've wanted to watch Pan's Labyrinth for a while but never got round to it. I couldn't work out what kind of film it actually was though, is it scary or more like a children's story? If we're recommending musicals I recommend Oliver! (although the chances you haven't seen it are probably low ) And what about Disney films? I personally love Finding Nemo when I need cheering up
  4. That's a very organised setup Timmo! Why two monitors? I mostly use my laptop so I haven't got much of a set-up to show either!
  5. Roald Dahl came to my mind too. or maybe the Chronicles of Narnia series? Although written for children there's a lot more you can get out of it reading as an adult. There's always Harry Potter, which a lot of adults enjoy and the audio books are good Anne of Green Gables is a really nice book too Hope your Mom is feeling better soon
  6. I'd like to add 'The Truman Show' and 'Yes Man' to my recommendations. I know some people don't like Jim Carrey but I think he's really funny and The Truman Show is really quite clever too (also I second charliepud's 'Forrest Gump' recommendation - even though the film makes me cry )
  7. I'd love to help but I'm rubbish with films! I haven't heard of most of the ones on your list Kell! I do love The Gilmore Girls though, and Shawshank redemption maybe I should take some advice from this thread too... Have you seen The Green Mile? that's another good King one And the Lord of the Rings films (obviously). The only series I follow is Big Bang Theory which is really good and really funny (in my opinion anyway!) um... I think that's about all I can think of at the moment
  8. I'm pretty sure Patrick Gale's Notes from an Exhibition is set partly in a bookshop Also I seem to remember the bookshop from The Shadow of The Wind also turns up in Zaphon's The Angels Game And if libraries count then there's a couple of parts in a library in Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian And Matilda...
  9. Book Shop Hardback or Paperback?
  10. what would we do without iplayer!? And you should definitely read it Laura, its really good. Do you like the series so far?
  11. Is anybody else watching this series? I watched the first one tonight and it was quite good, they did miss quite a lot out but I suppose they always do! Was a little surprised to see who they chose to play Miss Havisham and Magwitch too, they didn't look anything like I imagined them to from the book!
  12. Christmas present wrapping - I love this part! :)

  13. Haha! Ok agreed baby owl wasn't so cute Wolf pups were definitely one of the cutest, and the baby seals! I love watching the penguins getting out of the water too, they just sort of pop out and belly-flop onto the ice! I wish I had David Attenborough's job... and brain!
  14. I haven't been to a gig for ages! I do miss them, I just don't really have the money to go to many of them! My first gig was Aiden, Taking Back Sunday and Lostprophets at the NEC so I think that will always be my favourite one! Hope you enjoy Machine Head, I bet they're epic live!
  15. I love this programme! It's the only programme I have to watch every week. I think I have been slightly traumatised by some of the scenes though... And my boyfriend has to sit through an hour of me going 'awwwwww!' every time a baby anything comes on
  16. I hate that coffee advert too! But I love the new John Lewis advert where the little kid can't wait to give his parents their present... so cute! Also the Christmas Coca Cola advert because when that comes on, you know it's nearly Christmas!
  17. Very impressive list What did you think of The Almost Moon? I personally really didn't like it but I've always wondered if maybe that's because I set my expectations too high after reading 'The Lovely Bones'.
  18. That's such a good idea! I love butterflies / things with butterflies on! I tend to hoard random things but I'm not sure any of it can be called collecting, I don't have enough money for that! I do have a thing for pretty notebooks though and would collect them if I could afford it! Along with panda things, books with pretty bindings and almost anything purple I do have a lot of bears from my childhood.. I guess that could be a sort of collection?
  19. I have a few signed books but not from signings, I either bought them or they were given to me as presents. I have a Terry Pratchett one which is my favourite, a Carlos Ruiz Zaphon, Kai Meyer, E.R. Reilly and John Pridmore (which you may be happy to hear is a non fiction Talisman) So no claims to fame and none of them are of much physical value but I love them all anyway
  20. I think I do this, although due to a lack of travelling, the voices I imagine are probably nothing like what they should be
  21. Black Balloon - The Goo Goo Dolls
  22. I had a look and the book 'The City Underground' by Suzanne Martel came up a couple of times. It was published in 1963 but I don't think the plot looks quite the same from what I've seen
  23. I heard today that they said even though they're splitting up, they ARE releasing a new 'best of' album. Not that it really makes up for it (Also that U2 headline made me laugh )
  24. My sister LOVES Mills and Boon, I've tried one but I couldn't even finish it, as Janet said, they're very predictable (and cliched). As far as I can tell the men are always arrogant, the woman are always ridiculously vulnerable and there's always a happy ending. Saying that, I never go for any type of romance book, they're just not my thing, so maybe if you like other romance you might like Mills and Boon?
  25. The Philosopher's Apprentice - James Morrow ? It's very psychological as well as philosophical and very suspenseful, really makes you think. George Orwell's 'Nineteen Eighty Four' is another very good psychological book I've read recently (and I really liked The Lord of The Flies )
