  1. Oh my, you have a massive TBR pile! Some favourites of mine: Alias Grace - Margaret Atwood The Blind assassin - Margaret Atwood The Swarm - Frank Schatzing (this one is unexpectedly good) Life of Pi - Yann Martell The Book Thief - Markus Zusak The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - Mark Haddon The Casual Vacancy - JK Rowling The Wind-up Bird Chronicle - Haruki Murakami You have so many great books ahead of you. All the best for 2017!
  2. I've nearly finished The Poisonous Seed by Linda Stratmann. Good but not great, and it is dragging a bit towards the end. Not sure what to read next.....I'm thinking either Middlesex or The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.
  3. Oh, cool I shall definitely use it. Thanks to Kylie too! It's very, very readable. There's nothing complicated about it and it almost reads like a series of stories about different topics. You will know from the first chapter whether you'll enjoy it or not. Yeah, I need to wait until I have a nice big chunk of time to dedicate to it (House of Leaves). I don't think it's an easy read, probably style over substance, but because it's on the Rory list, it's all the more reason to read it! Yeah, but if it's a great book (and Pillars of the Earth is) you'll probably end up wishing it was even longer. I was just going to say that I didn't think I'd read this one, but I've looked on Amazon and I have read it. I can't remember the Ferris Wheel though. I think I enjoyed it but my favorite of his is The Wind Up Bird Chronicle.
  4. Yeah, I know, strange isn't it? It was short-listed as well, so the panel must have seen something special in it.
  5. A lot of people seem to feel similar, going by Amazon reviews. Still, I'm glad I read it as it's one more off the TBR list. The Poisonous Seed by Linda Stratmann is going well. It gets right into the story from page one, which is often a good thing.
  6. Last night I finished We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves. It was good, but not great - felt like something was missing. I'm a bit surprised that it was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, as I didn't find it remarkable in any way. I've picked my next read somewhat at random: The Poisonous Seed by Linda Stratmann.
  7. Thanks, Kay. The downside of having them all on Kindle is that I sometimes forget how many I have. It's always a shock to list the actual number at the start of every year! Hope you have a great reading year in 2017.
  8. Hope you have a great reading year in 2017, Hayley!
  9. 1Q84 was very much like this. There was a lot of sex, especially between women, and constant discussion of various body parts. No exaggeration, there was some sexual reference every 10 pages or so.
  10. Thanks all. I've already bought 5 books this year.
  11. I've just picked this up on the Kindle Monthly Deals for only £1.99. So glad you posted about the monthly Kindle deals. I always forget to check those! I've bought The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, The Age of Wonder by Richard Holmes and Wild Swans by Jung Chang. There are a few others that I could have bought but I'm trying to show some restraint so early in the new year. I've nearly finished We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler. If all goes to plan (ie. if I don't fall asleep) I should finish it tonight. It's very different to what I expected, and I'm not that keen on the descriptions of lab experiments on animals.
  12. I haven't read any Kerouac but I do have On The Road on my wishlist as it's one of those books that always appear on 'must read' lists. I may struggle with his writing style though - I've read a few books like that and always struggled with them. Hope you enjoy On Beauty. I've read White Teeth which I enjoyed, but couldn't even finish NW.
  13. Wishing you a great reading year in 2017, Noll.
  14. Have a great reading year in 2017!. You can't go wrong with Diane Chamberlain - I have enjoyed all her books that I have read.
  15. I enjoyed To Kill A Mockingbird when I read it. I have to agree with you about Dickens not being an easy author. I have read a couple of his books fairly recently and they do take effort and dedication. I'd like to read more classics, so will be following your thread with interest. Have a great reading year!
  16. I'll be interested to hear what you think about this one, Brian. I added it to my wishlist last year. My boss had it on his desk one day, and said he'd been recommended it by his boss. It looked like it would be an interesting read, but I'm still on the fence about reading it (with so many others on my pile).
  17. Back to work tomorrow. I will try to stay positive but it's just so depressing. :-(

I actually didn't mind going back to work after xmas as I had such a good 3 days off with the kids.

  18. Oh my, I had no idea you had so many books on your TBR pile. I mean I knew you had a lot, but I didn't know it was that many! Some stand-out books from your list that I have enjoyed: Margaret Atwood Alias Grace Michel Faber The Book of Strange New Things (I loved this one so much when I read it this year. Loved it!) SE Hinton Tex SE Hinton That Was Then, This Is Now (my very favourite book as a teengaer. Rather annoyingly, it's not available on Kindle) Stephen King IT (my second favourite King) Stephen King The Stand (my favourite King and possibly my favourite book of all time) Haruki Murakami The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (really great read) Vincent Bugliosi Helter Skelter (a must-read, for anyone interested in the case) I hope you have a great reading year, Kylie, and hopefully you can knock some off your TBR pile.
  19. I hope you have a great reading year, Alexander.
  20. Have a great reading year, Madeleine!
  21. Have a great reading year, Anisia. I've never read any Ian Rankin, though I have heard of him. I like a good crime thriller, so I may have to check him out.
  22. Have a great reading year, muggle not!
  23. I have this one my Kindle, and I think it's on the Rory Gilmore challenge as well. I hope to read it this year, as I have only heard good things about it.
  24. I hope you enjoy Reamde and 1Q84 when you get around to reading them. Both very good books and I'm glad I ended 2016 on a high note.
  25. I've just finished a re-read of this. It's one of my favourite non-fiction books. The subject matter is interesting, but the way Bryson tells it makes it even more so. I also have the illustrated version, and I think there is a condensed version as well.
