  1. Ian Cameron Esslemont's fourth Malazan Empire novel has appeared a couple of days early in hardback. It's called Orb Sceptre Throne, and takes place largely in the aftermath of Steven Erikson's magnificent Toll the Hounds. http://www.amazon.co...26801236&sr=1-1 I've only just got ICE's third Malazan novel, Stonewielder, in paperback and there's another one out already? Sheesh! And in other news ... Erikson's own first part of his Kharkanas Trilogy, called Forge of Darkness, is scheduled for an August 2012 release.
  2. The Kindle version is excellent, Julie - it even includes the illustrations. So much easier than carting around the house-sized paperback version!
  3. It's definitely worth a read! I was too tired to read much yesterday. I'm up to page 1,159 now, so only about 160 pages left.
  4. I watched Stargazing Live last night - great stuff
  5. Let's hope Martin Freeman can squeeze filming in this year in the midst of his commitment to The Hobbit and its promotion!
  6. I'll have to watch the end again ...
  7. Also ...
  8. My dislike of their interpretation of Moriarty aside, that was probably my favourite episode so far. It actually slowed down and took its time, and was better for it, imo, and I thought the last ten minutes or so was really well handled.
  9. Only if you share your Kindle Fire as well
  10. This is me on the glass floor at the top of the CN Tower in Toronto, hence the constipated expression
  11. I am indeed, it's very good
  12. 950 pages into The Stand now.
  13. I think I want to marry your husband, Julie. I've never thought that about another man before Full report when you get it, please!
  14. The Speckled Band is a terrific story Notice how they've used those two titles in the BBC's Sherlock (as 'The Speckled Blonde' and Mrs Hudson finding the thumb in the fridge ) I've got the complete collection and it's 30+ years since I read any of them, so I was intending to give them another read anyway. Not setting any timescales for myself, though.
  15. Hi Julie, very interesting post, thanks! I'd imagine there must be. I always find it curious when people say they want the Kindle backlit, when we've spent all this time reading books without one, lol. I did notice, in the first review on the Amazon page, that the guy said he'd got both a Kindle Touch and Kindle Fire, because the Fire hurt his eyes when reading. Each to their own, though As a tablet, from what you say, it sounds great, and I'd definitely consider getting one for other uses
  16. It'll be interesting to hear what people make of the Kindle Fire as a reading device, given that it doesn't use an e-ink screen. Personally, I spend enough time staring at LCD/LED screens, so the thought of doing that with my reading as well doesn't really appeal.
  17. Awww, poor ickle Kindle! Trust me, when you're reading The Stand, 1,300 pages, where the paperback edition is the size of a small house, you'll adore it
  18. Hi Janet - you can see the page number at the bottom of the screen when you press the 'menu' button, but you can't get it to display all the time, from what I understand. I'm on page 570 of 1,320 of The Stand, apparently For more info you can have a read here: http://www.amazon.co...200504440#pages
  19. I enjoyed it a lot, Sofia. Bear in mind it is very short (200-ish pages, I think). I got it cheap and don't think I would have paid full price for it, so you might want to wait until the price is reduced
  20. I couldn't figure out how to get out of that sentence once I'd started it I'm sure you'll love it
  21. Yes, I believe so. I haven't read the Void trilogy, mainly because Judas Unchained had me losing the will to live
  22. I watched part 1 of Sky's adaptation of Treasure Island last night. It was ... okay. I can't work out whether I liked Eddie Izzard as Long John Silver or not. On the one hand, his acting wasn't awful, on the other hand, I can imagine what a better actor could do with the role. And, on the other hand (I am a mutant), Eddie was far better than Phillip Glenister as Captain Smollett - he seemed to be sleepwalking through the part, to me.
  23. I'll be intrigued to hear what you make of Pandora's Star/Judas Unchained when you get around to them
  24. Bloody Karsa - I'd trust him about as far as I could throw him (which wouldn't be far).
  25. I tried turning my monitor off. It's made replying to your post very problematic ...
