  1. I will need to check mine when I have time, although I'm not sure I have anything really old. My brother has a first edition Robert Burns, though, which was my Dad's until recently. I'm not sure why he gave it to my brother rather than me, maybe he thought I had quite enough books already! But I will be very sad if my brother sells it rather than treasuring it like I would - just thinking about it -
  2. 350 pages into The Stand now.
  3. Nothing else was getting done at all, I was enjoying my reading time so much! From Amazon, it looks like The Apple isn't a sequel as such, but short stories continuing the story for some of the characters, and giving back story for some others. Opinion in the reviews seems divided between it being a worthwhile read or not, but I know not to expect an in-depth novel, and I couldn't resist the chance to spend more time in the characters' company.
  4. 10/10 for the first time today! Yay!
  5. There has been a bit of chat on the book's own thread, but not too much yet. I enjoyed it so much I only took a few days to read it, and I'm still missing the characters and that world. I have ordered The Apple to enjoy them for a wee bit longer...
  6. :sign0072: Hope you are having a great birthday!
  7. Wood Seagulls or pigeons?
  8. Oooh, I have signature envy now! But that FS edition will look so lovely on the shelf...
  9. Another 140 pages of The Stand so far today.
  10. I have read 8 of them (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Stars my Destination, It, The Stand, The Hobbit, Nineteen Eighty-Four, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and The Lord of the Rings). I am Legend is waiting on my shelf, and I'm looking forward to reading that. I have been thinking of buying the His Dark Materials trilogy for ages now, and I got an email telling me it is currently on offer as a free set from The Folio Society if I buy three books from them. I love collecting their books (it is my only vice, honest - well, nearly...) so I think I will probably not be able to resist that offer.
  11. That drives me nuts, too. Last time I was at the cinema, two women a couple of rows behind me were still having a loud conversation 5 minutes into the film. I could feel my blood pressure reaching dangerous levels with totally out-of-proportion rage! Strangely, they ignored my half turning round and tutting a couple times (and several other people doing the same), so I finally got up and moved to the other side of the cinema. At the end of the film, I was carefully not looking over to where these noisy and inconsiderate people were sitting, but one of them called over to me and I discovered it was a woman I work with...
  12. Clarinet Therapist or self-help?
  13. I finished the book yesterday and, like madcow, had to buy The Apple just for the thought of keeping the characters in my life a wee bit longer! I had never heard of TCPatW before seeing it suggested in The Rory Gilmore Challenge, and hadn't been sure how I would enjoy it, but I really enjoyed the way in which that whole world and the characters were brought to life.
  14. Sixty pages into The Stand by Stephen King.
  15. :sign0072: Hope you have a lovely day!
  16. He's one of my weird crushes, too!
  17. ^ Yes, I had enjoyed the characters in TCPatW so much that I couldn't resist ordering The Apple. I know it has had some unfavourable comments, but I know in advance not to expect another TCPatW, so I'm looking forward to enjoying the short stories just for what they are. I had never even heard of Michel Faber before joining BCF; I'm really enjoying being introduced to new books and ways of thinking about old favourites.
  18. Finished The Crimson Petal and the White, and James Patterson's Run For Your Life. Ready to start The Stand by Stephen King now, it will be the first time I have read the uncut version. From Amazon, ordered: The Apple: New Crimson Petal Stories by Michel Faber Firestarter by Stephen King Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire
