@chrysalis_stage - I certainly found the beginning interesting in the way it brought to my attention just what we are doing when we are reading; I had never thought of it like that before. But I did find that it kept jolting me back out of the story every time I was getting into it, which made it seem awkward to me. But I agree, it is very cleverly done.

It took me a wee while to get into it, I found the opening a bit awkward, with the style of writing constantly reminding me that I was only observing the story rather than allowing me to become part of it. But I am enjoying both the story and the development of the characters now. I had thought it would take me a while to read, but I think it will only take me a three or four days due to how much I am enjoying it.

200 pages into The Crimson Petal and the White. I am having a run of reading long books just now; The Gate House was about 670 pages long, TCPatW is about 800 I think, The Stand (next on my list) is over 1000, and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest (hoping to read in the next few weeks) is about 650.

I'll second JCW's recommendation, Carrie was the first proper horror book I read and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I preferred Firestarter and it is one of my favourite Stephen King books; you don't often see it mentioned, for some reason.

If it helps, Tui, I enjoyed The Little Stranger very much (and found some bits particularly atmospheric) but didn't actually find it scary at all.

^It's so hard not to go mad on Amazon! Just finished The Gate House by Nelson DeMille, and starting The Crimson Petal and the White for the Rory Gilmore Challenge.

Read another 150 pages of The Gate House. Q&A, Flowers for Algernon and The Valley of the Dolls arrived from Amazon. Does anyone else have the problem that being on this Forum makes them want to read so many more books, but leaves them so much less time?

I have never actually watched the film of The Stand. Having enjoyed the book so much, I was worried that I would feel let down by the film. But I do enjoy a good apocalypse-type book/film!

I have checked, and it is the 1990 complete and uncut edition I have now. I remember when I bought it being a bit put out to realise that the first edition I read had been abridged, as I don't remember that there was any indication that it wasn't the full story. Presumably the publishers were nervous about the length? The abridged version I previously read was still quite thick, and the uncut version I have now is 1007 pages long. I'm hoping to get started on it by the end of the month, and really looking forward to it. Stephen King at his best.

I have had that book sitting by my bed to read for months, great to know it's a good one! I'm half way through The Gate House by Nelson DeMille, and my copy of the Crimson Petal and the White arrived today
