  1. Anyone else read this yet??

I'm facing it with some trepidation. I mean, Rankin and Rebus is like neeps and tatties.

I'm so worried I'll be disappointed.

But on the positive side, Ian Rankin said in an interview that Edinburgh has a cold case unit now, so we might not have heard the last of Rebus.

The doors may be open, but has anyone else been through it yet?

  2. For some reason she's an author who's books I have never read. Not really sure why.

I recently saw a TV adaptation of 'Under Suspicion' which I thought was really good so have bought 'The Red Dahlia' as it supposedly has the same characters in and I missed the recent episodes on ITV.

Has anybody read this?! Any good?!

I read it last summer. I really enjoyed it. TV version was ok, but they don't have the time to go into the same detail.

The next novel Cut Above is also a corker. I read it in one sitting.

I've read them out of sequence but they stand alone ok.

    Hope you enjoy it.

  3. Hello all,

I can't be the only person in the world that has read any of Will Self's novels, but whenever I mention him to other bookies they look at me blankly.

His books (and his articles) always represents a challenge for me. He's the only modern author that ask a lot from me. I need to get a dictionary out for a start. I sometimes have to read the same page more than once to get it.

I love his use of language, that he doesn't dumb down, I love his radicalism, his humour and his subversive swipes at culture.

When I finish any of his books I get a different sense of satisfaction than if I read something purely for entertainment or schlump value.

I'd be glad to hear what other people have thought.

    Happy page turning.

  4. He kind of does. He plays Tony really well that I now think of him when reading books. Even though I had my own picture of Tony before the TV show.

But there are other characters where I don't think of them. Like Morgan freeman? I think he played Alex Cross in Along came a spider. I have kept to my own ideal of Alex.

    Sorry slightly off Topic.

On topic on the off topic.....I was watching a Val Mcdermid interview and she said that now when she writes Tony Hill she imagines Robson Green.

I've read a few of her books now particularly the Tony Hill series, and I haven't read them in any sort of order.

A Grave Tattoo is next on my list after I've finished Fever of the Bone. I'm only a chapter in but the call of it will make sure I head off for an early night.

  5. Hi folks,

I'm new to the forum and I'm looking forward to reading all your reading suggestions.

I'm not sure if its Rebus I love or his TV counterpart Ken Stott, either way grumpy, world weary and grizzled work best for me. And they're repeating the Rebus series on ITV 3 on Saturday night. Yay, or yum or whatever floats your boat.

D.S Logan Macrae in Stuart Macbride's first four novels had me totally gripped.

Lynda La Plante's James Langden from Above Suspicion series, and Val McDermid's DCI Carol Jordan too.

Someone mentioned Irvine Welshe's Crime which was another cracker, but his first crime novel, Filth, was sublime.

Very gritty, and grim. I felt like I needed a shower every time I got through a chapter.

If the imagery makes you feel like you're treading through raw sewage, I'm happy.
