  1. Coming to the end of Sophie's World. It has been a "sticky" book for me. I am impatient to finish it and get onto something else. I know exactly what that is going to be! I almost bought two more second hand books today but luckily the bus came in the nick of time. Damn that charity shop being right next to the bus stop! Temptation
  2. I do! I do! Tell all the good stuff Brida....
  3. Good start Ooshie I enjoyed and agreed with your answers. I am going to have to try to think of something different to say about the book now!
  4. It's the aspartame Johnny. That stuff is a nerve toxin (Phenylalanine)basically. Google it and see.

    Hi there

Start yourself either a members thread or a reading blog or both and put your TBR titles in there. 5 people you meet in heaven is on my list too, haven't read it yet but haven't heard any negative reviews at all on that one. I just read Lovely Bones which was good.
  6. Is that the Vlad book? Thought you had already read that?
  7. That's a big list Rosie! tried to pick out ones I knew from your list. I remember reading the Family From One End Street I think back when I was at school (a very long time ago). My middle daughter is an insatiable reader and she loves Micheal Morpugo. Reading is the key to everything. Well done and good luck!
  8. Wow Weave that's a high recommendation. If the book is that good I will try to find it.
  9. I bought yet another book on the way to work again today. It is called Duel by James Lansdale. It is the true historical story of the last fatal duel in Scotland. Bit of a boy book I suppose. Looked interesting.
  10. Is a politician the same as being a pagan then Nollaig? They get away with anything too.
  11. Dunno but I suspect we are all the same. And when you finish it and close the book you think back to the story and you are in the warm after glow....maybe books are like sex really?
  12. I have got 20 books in my TBR pile now! TBR PILE: Tipping The Velvet The Night Watch The Boy In Striped Pyjamas Lyonesse Lyonesse 2 Lyonesse 3 Persuasion Out Of India Five people You Meet In Heaven One Girl's War Trainspotting (screenplay) The Mathematics Of Love Either Side Of Winter Why Men Marry Some Women And Not Others Judgement on Janus Victory on Janus If Chins Could Kill Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Q & A ( Reading Circle book) Claude and Madeline
  13. That's under my bed in my TBR pile. I didn't do any reading today but I had some more books from Amazon I am looking forward to: If Chins Could Kill (autobiography) and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. This looks hilarious.

    Hi there

It lays out the philosophy quite simply in little chunks. Then there is the back story which is quite mysterious. I am 3/4 of the way through and I have no idea how it will end. Hey Brida have you got a TBR (To Be Read) pile yet from seeing books mentioned here?
  15. Welcome to the forum Cressie! Frankie I am sorry to say you might be a terrible librarian. You would always be reading instead of working.
  16. Welcome Polarfox , yeah you are in the right place.

Hi Johnny, I have no interest in football they are a bunch of overpaid poofters. Just trying to attract your attention. I am gonna be here till 8am sunday again so PM me if you want to chat ? Or are you going out anywhere?
  20. I see what you mean rob, the capacity to "live and let live" is not in their mental toolbox. it is not restricted to muslims though. I have talked to fundamentalist Christians from America at length and some of them are complete nutters. It is frightening. The ironic thing is that they think that they are diametrically opposed to islam and yet their world view is almost exactly the same when you go into it, eg women are being punished for Original Sin, AIDS is god's punishment to gays etc and all that. Oh and the US president has a direct hotline to God don't forget that.
  21. I checked on that book I mentioned earlier: Women who changed the world by Ros Horton & Sally Simmons published by Quercus I promise Jordan and Cheryl Cole are not in it.
  22. Laundry Fairy has a book at home ..from memory I think it is called "women who changed the world" I think but not sure....I will check out the author and get back to you. I know it is all short biographies.
  23. I agree. Rob, dunno where you have got this idea from! That's what a forum is for so post away. It is obvious to me that the author put all those elements and situations into the book as metaphors . He intended the book to educate the reader rather than just tell a story, and he says in the back of the book (in my copy anyway) that this was important to him. I can appreciate that on one level, and in that way it was a good book, but on another level I could not get passed the ill treatment of women so could not enjoy the read. It made me too angry. My wife would not even pick the book up.
  24. Good deal then. Will you review them for us after reading?
