  1. It's easier to talk about now than it was then! I got myself into quite an abusive relationship during my A-levels. I was impressionable and naive, and was disallowed things like make-up and an education. He wanted me to stay at home and play the little wifey. In short, he'd emotionally blackmail me into missing important lessons and exams. A lot of it was my fault for listening to him, but he was older and wiser.

I do intend to do something about it as soon as I can, but I need the A-levels to get uni points and so on first, and currently it isn't financially viable. I'm working in the family cafe at the moment.

I'm a big lover of fantasy, but a big believer in love, so my novel is starting out as a combination of the two. I have no idea where it will take me, and at the moment it's just for fun, and for me :)

  2. Hi Andrea :)

I'm a poet by nature, although I've begun working on short prose and am attempting something of a novel at the moment. Mostly though, my posts in Writer's Corner are because of my reading and love of English. Despite being rather uneducated I'm pretty hot on spelling, grammar, punctuation and structure. And my educational failures are my biggest regret in life. From about the age of 5 I always wanted to teach English, but for various reasons life took me down another route!

  3. Hmmm, ok: 1. I had to have my own maths group in primary school. It consisted of me, me and me. I was THAT bad at it. 2. I had to have my own English group in primary school. Again consisting of just me. I was THAT good. 3. If I'm at the computer, I will 100% have a cup of tea in front of me, with a hot water bottle under my feet and my crochet blanket over my lap. I'm 23 years old....... 4. I keep a copy of Jane Eyre under my pillow. 5. I've been learning to drive for the last 6 years.
  4. Ooh hello! Sorry I haven't been around, tough working week for me. How was the US?

  5. @BookJumper alas my list is too long already. I have ordered the entire Thursday Next series and one of those pretty Paperblanks because my old one is falling to pieces through overuse. To do this I was very clever: I transferred some money from my current account to my credit card because the bill came in, and then used the credit card to do my shopping
  6. Since I was 14 really. I can go months without and then have them daily. And yes they do suck! It's far more common than people think.I'm sorry that you get them too.x

  7. I don't know if it's any good, I haven't actually read it but it's on my list... The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon is described as a gothic literary thriller. Synopsis courtesy of Waterstones because I cannot find one on Amazon: In an abandoned mansion at the heart of Barcelona, a young man - David Martin - makes his living by writing sensationalist novels under a pseudonym. The survivor of a troubled childhood, he has taken refuge in the world of books, and spends his nights spinning baroque tales about the city's underworld. But perhaps his dark imaginings are not as strange as they seem, for in a locked room deep within the house letters hinting at the mysterious death of the previous owner. Like a slow poison, the history of the place seeps into his bones as he struggles with an impossible love. Then David receives the offer of a lifetime: he is to write a book with the power to change hearts and minds. In return, he will receive a fortune, perhaps more. But as David begins the work, he realises that there is a connection between this haunting book and the shadows that surround his home...
  8. Hi and welcome Chris
  9. Kell, is it possible to put a temporary ban on this kind of incitement to purchase until I am rich?
  10. Goodnight Mister Tom and Meatloaf?!?!?!?! Yay! Hi and welcome
  11. Eagerly awaited I assure you Raven All points noted duly, and I will reread at some point purely to validate them (it has been a while since I read the trilogy). On another note and entirely off-topic, WoW? Really? For four whole years? Oh dear... In that case, although this may confuse other forum members, I will say this: LotRO ftw imho. The PvP's not up to much currently, but we have the upperhand on PvE. No doubt about that.
  12. Regarding Fforde, I just about managed to limit myself to 200 pages, but it was hard to do this. I want to savour it, so I've reluctantly left the rest for tonight. I'm glad you're enjoying Jane Eyre so Libri, it's probably my favourite novel of all time.
  13. In that case Chrissy, Do Not Disturb sign on the door, phone off, and I'll speak to you all later! Tata for now
  14. I'm just about to get into bed with Eyre Affair Libri, I read the first page this afternoon, and I've been dying to get back to it properly since then. I shall be MIA for a few hours methinks
  15. Anne Rice's Interview With a Vampire combines a hefty enough tome for flying with and vampires, or if you've already read this one, any of her Vampire Chronicles, while still being small enough to fit into a medium sized handbag and not being heavy. Alternatively, if you don't mind something a little more supernatural, James Herbert's Ghosts of Sleath, Fluke or The Magic Cottage are wonderful. All of these are thrillers, not too heavy as far as the reading goes, and perfectly sized for the handbag. GoS sees David Ash investigating a series of hauntings in a village called Sleath, Fluke sees a dog (called Fluke) through his adventures of looking for the perfect family and his horrors along the way, with a nice supernatural twist, and The Magic Cottage sees an artistic and very much in love couple move into the ideal country cottage in the woods, with various supernatural happenings. I am being presumptious, but Dan Brown is heading down the supernatural route anyhow. Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is a lovely little thriller but maintains a sensible and real storyline. The girl gets separated from her mother and brother on a family outing, and this is the story of her survival, alone and desperate. Finally, if you like Patterson, you may enjoy early Patricia Cornwell, starting with Post-Mortem. These are based on a combination of medical forensics and police detective. The leading lady is one Kay Scarpetta, a forensic pathologist, who in each novel finds herself grippingly involved in different serial murder investigations. Between Kay and her friends Marino and Benton, she forensicly maps her way to the killer...
  16. Recommendation has been duly noted, and added to the list of "Must Buys As Soon As I Have Monies" Therefore Fi, I look forward to your conclusion when you have received and read it
  17. I second the first, it is one of my favourite stories, although much neglected when I discuss my favourites. As for the second, this is listed in my book journal's "wants" section, under the header "Everything by Neil Gaiman"
  18. Wooot???? I can't comprehend this! I understand the words but my sense of literature refuses to let me see the meaning of them Especially as I have about 5 different collections of Jane Austen's 6 novels!
  19. Ah but you didn't have me nagging you for that one
  20. One word...JEALOUS I expect a detailed review of the event from all those attending
  21. Hi and welcome Iain

    Hello!

Hi and welcome to the forum Perky
  23. Hopefully not true about the illness Fi. I'd like to see a few more out of him yet, as I'm hooked.
  24. Thanks for adding me and you're welcome :)

I hate bullying with a passion. My babby sister grew up with kids rubbing her lunch in her hair and calling her a "l*sbo" because her only friend was another girl. Needless to say I took an overly active approach and nearly ended up in trouble a lot of times. Although I've mellowed out and grown up, I still believe in taking an active approach, just not a violent one.

It really sucks that you're having to go through this. I know it can't be easy with your OH so far away, different timezones etc. I expect it makes it quite difficult sometimes when you need to talk to someone and offload. But that's what we're here for, and you can count on us.x
