  1. You know, the ends of my fingers are raw - raw I tell you! - from being dragged, kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. Maybe I'll get one for my birthday and not shove it immediately under the bed... I'm like Buck Rogers, me!
  2. Hnnnnnnng....POP....chink blub blub blub blub slurrrrp aaaaahhhhhhhhh Delivered from the Supporter's HotTub!
  3. I always think it's a shame that publishers feel they have to reel punters in with a "THE NEW..." bla bla blahh tag. Most annoying, but I guess it helps the good authors so what the hey, hey? Does anyone else read Jo Nesbo as Jones Bo when all the letters are the same size? No? Just me then...
  4. Funnily enough, I picked it up the other day, precisely because of this flippin' forum!!!
  5. I am about two-thirds of the way through Surface Detail by Iain M. Banks who, as usual, is terribly entertaining, intelligent and witty. I am loving it, and am not looking forward to leaving it behind for a whole week!
  6. I have The Last Samurai on my TBR mountain and will now bump it up to the top. Great reviews, Ethan. Thanks for posting 'em!
  7. I always enjoy your reviews, Poppyshake. But I have to stop buying books - I've never read Gaiman before and now...gah! Another author, thanks to you!!!
  8. Good evening, Pontalba. I have read The Chrysalids twice - I love Wyndham, having read all of his works (I think) since I was a young lad. Magic stuff. I hope all is well with you.
  9. All of the above, fella, plus Michael Marshall, J A Kerley and Henning Mankell as well - there're loads of great crime authors out there currently.

Mine's taken in Cornwall, England. A little fishing village called Porthleven, where my family has a house. Delightful. Are you from South Africa? My Uncles Bill and Nigel own a wine estate there. Not been to visit yet, though. One day! :)

  11. Isn't it good how we all feel differently about these things! What I wonder is how is it that we do see things differently from one another? What makes one love a historical novel and another despise it? Or how is it that I find Stephen King sometimes gratuitous, and yet found Vlad (whilst certainly very grim in places) to be...hmmm...acceptable? Not really the right word to use, but I didn't find it out of place. Does this make sense? So, what makes us all so different? Is it cultural? Is it genetic? This isn't the correct thread now, is it? I'll have the Mods after me with a big stick...
  12. I'm off to Wales on Monday, undertaking my ML training in Snowdonia (which'll be interesting, if a little nerve-wracking...) I'll let you know. Wild camping in the Mountains often lends itself to stargazing in wonderment! x

  13. Ahhh, you know...pootling along...xx

  14. That's my point, though, Andrea. I have all the edge of a satsuma. None. I've currently got my head in a bucket of water (figuratively). x

  15. *runs in, hugs fiercely, dashes out blushing

  16. Hi Noll. Not heard from you for a while, so I thought I'd pop by to say hello. How're things in sunny Ireland? x

  17. Ha-ha-haaaaaaapy BIRTHDAY! Hope you have a great one.

Yo, Beef. Have a brilliant day, chap! Eee hee!

Weird. Your photo is remarkably similar to mine! :)

Kendal is indeed a lovely place. I'll go there again, I'm sure. How're tings in da hood, y'all? xx

  21. This looks fab, Michelle. Dammit. I've simply got to stop finding new authors I like! This forum has a lot to answer for (including my blessed overdraft...)
  22. Worth Dying For by Lee Child This is a beltingly good read, as usual. There's only been one of Child's novels that I haven't been entirely hooked by. Once again, I've been drawn into the macho world of Jack Reacher and enjoyed every minute I've spent there. Totally unlike me, really, but there you go. Reacher lands in a Nebraskan township and, quite by accident, gets embroiled in the nasty local politics and saves the day, as usual. Guys, if you like these books, you'll love this one! 9/10
  23. Now, you see...I really enjoyed Her Fearful Symmetry. I guess I quite enjoy all the brou-ha-ha about spirits and souls and all that jazz. I also liked the colour and tone of the novel. Very different from The Time Traveller's Wife. I'll actually look forward to her next novel. We're all flowers in a garden, aren't we! I enjoy this thread, Pontalba. Thank you.
  24. Mwah mwah mwah!

*sounds of Mac dashing off, slamming a door and giggling coquettishly...
