  1. I've been chatting on The Stand's thread about the schmaltzy dialogue between Stu and Fran being an area that lets King down. I've really loved some of his books, but equally thought that some were complete turkeys. I thought The Stand and The Shining were magnificent novels, though.
  2. The Shining was the first Stephen King book I read - it really gave me the willy's (I was about 13, I think). We might get done, talking about other Stephen King books on this thread - but I don't know how to merge them! I think Michelle started a thread on Stephen King. I'll have a look and post something so you know where it is.
  3. I have The Coffin Dancer to read, Dan. I'll get on to it as soon as I've finished this one so we can chat about it, eh? Hope you're well, fella.

I am, yes. I'm half way there, waiting for the next stage in the process, which should be the end of this year or the beginning of next year. It takes up to two and a half years to get into the service around here - a little frustrating, but patience is my middle name. How about you?

  5. I have yet to read them (groan - I have so many things to read. My home and garage are practically burstingwith books...) I'm enjoying all sorts of crime thrillers at the moment. I simply have to try Rankin's stuff (Ian, not Robert, 'cos I've already read his books)
  6. Hello there. Thought I'd drop in to say hi. I haven't done so before, and for this I can make no excuse save for the fact that my butterfly-like mind can make me appear inattentive and terribly rude. I can only offer my apologies. :D

How are things in lovely Scotland (one assumes this is where you are) - I am a McKenzie - hence 'Mac' - and love the Country as though I belonged there.

    Anyway. Hoping you are well.

    :)

  7. I have. I love Conan Doyle. There's a great book that features the man himself called Arthur And George by Julian Barnes which is (I think) based on fact. It's gripping, exciting and paints a lovely picture of the famous author. I'm sure you'd like it. :D

  8. My god! You read as fast as I don't know what! I feel somewhat intimidated! I think I may be in the Dead And Gone book ring, so I'm looking forward to reading it myself.
  9. This is one of the books I've read twice. When I was a child, I read a comic called Eagle. In this comic there featured a story called Survivor, about a virus that swept the world, killing everybody except for a small percentage of children that held a particular resistance within them. I loved it. Consequently, when I picked up The Stand I was drawn in hook, line and sinker. I really enjoyed the struggle to get to Boulder (I've even played in Boulder - this was a real treat for me!) and the development of the characters, but the Stu and Fran thing did irk me more than somewhat - m.o.o.n spells irked! I find that Stephen King can blow hot and cold - some of his works are genius, some of them are complete turkeys. I loved It, too.
  10. I'm on tip-top form, thank you. I'm about to settle down to a couple of hours solid reading, which'll be nice. What's going on in your world?

    Hello from Kel1

:006:Hello Kel1. You'll have plenty of time to become addicted to this forum, in that case. What a lovely bunch they are on here! Congratulations on the pregnancy - most of my friends are/have been pregnant of late. I must be shirking in my duties... (was that too much information? )
  12. Hello there! Just popping in to say hello there. How are you doing?

  13. Adam. Hello. I note that you have visited my McRecommends thread, and this makes me glad, for I suspect that we share very similar tastes in literature. Do have a look at my Mac Reads 2009 do-dah, as you may enjoy some of the books I've "reviewed" on this what-sit. Have a time, good sir. Indeed.
  14. Mac

Greetings, friend. Thanks for the acknowledgement of the humour in my McRecommends thread. It certainly amused me!

How're you doing? What are you doing? How's life? How many questions am I going to ask? Does this car belong to you, sir?

(Sorry - I'm rehearsing speech patterns for when I become a police officer...)

Anyway. I hope you're very well. Pip pip.

  15. This is a great review, Bethany. You empty your mind the same way I do. I like this thread.
  16. Hey Scarlette. Just dropping by to say hello! How're things in your part of the world?

  17. Mac

Things are well, thank you kindly. Gardening, reading, playing a bit of guitar, you know the thing. One of those rare beasts - a weekend where nothing's planned (save for playing tonight in a sfiddley bar). Heavenly, really. Gorgeous weather, innit???

  18. Afternoon, Andy. How, in the name of Odin's beard, are you? I have returned from my fearsome attack on my garden and am now opening a bottle of a cheeky little bottle of Barolo (a reassuringly expensive bottle of Italian wonderment!).

So. All's well with you, I trust?

  19. This is indeed a good point. Well spotted, that man!
  20. Pretty good, thanks. I've been gardening all weekend, I'm counting down the days to when I leave work (Friday, 21st August - whoopee!) and I'm out playing tonight. So, things are okay. What's the weird allergy thing you've got going on?

Ooh, hey. Have you read any of Henning Mankell's stuff? It's great crime fiction. I think you'd really like him.

  21. Mac

Ahoy there, Charm. Just dropping in to see how you're doing. Are you well and enjoying your Sunday? Hope so.

    TTFN.

  22. Mac

Afternoon to you. I hope you're well and enjoying your Sunday, good lady. I've come in from the relentless sun to prat about on my laptop after nearly breaking my back trying to plant a hedge in what felt like solid rock. I'm an idiot man, don't you know.

So, how are you? Excellent and tickety-boo, I trust. :D

  23. Hey there, Loo. How're things going? Have you read Harlan Coben's most recent novel (it's a Myron one, yay!)?

    Anyway. Hope you're well.

  24. Bernard Black is a god! Evidence for this fact? I quote:

Am I dead? Have I joined a cult?

    Excellent.

  25. Hi there s.gal83. You're bound to have a smashing time using this forum. Everyone is lovely and friendly (no frightening people are allowed!).

I actually don't have an aerial or receiver for my telly, so haven't had a TV licence for many years - I agree with you. TV's rubbish! I love films, though, and I buy the excellent series that look as though I'll like them on DVD. So. To illustrate further, I own a telly, but don't watch programmes beamed at it. I buy and choose my entertainment. Good, eh???

Anyway. Hoping this finds you very well and enjoying the site.

    Mac.
