  3. I read a review of The Elegance of the Hedgehog today and something about what the reviewer said made me think it may have a similar tone to The History of Love, but I haven't actually read it.

  5. Oh I hope not too, would be such a cop out.
  6. lol Mia I thought whatever was in the box was making the dreamworld thing so that the doctor would be there when it came out the box...or something like that.
  7. That was a good one. I really do not know how they are going to get out of it. Only River can really do anything, and Roary I suppose.
  8. My Dad used to call me Lucybird when I was little because I was always singing. It's the name I always use online.
  9. Wicked- Gregory Maguire Synopsis (from Amazon) An astonishingly rich re-creation of the land of Oz, this book retells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who wasn't so wicked after all. Taking readers past the yellow brick road and into a phantasmagoric world rich with imagination and allegory, Gregory Maguire just might change the reputation of one of the most sinister characters in literature. Review I did rather enjoy this book. I really liked Elphaba the majority of the time, in parts she kind of reminded me of me, although I did think she took to long to appear. I dislike Galinda but once she became Glinda I began to like her although I always found her a little snobby. Ultimately though I didn't think her actions were meant badly. I can't say I though much of he end though. It didn't seem to fit very well with the rest of the story and . It's worth a read though, and I may read the sequel if they have it at the library. 3.5/5
  10. Fiction I can help with. Pat Barker is a good place to start, the regeneration trilogy is great for stuff in the trenches and try Life Class for the home front. You could also try Birdsong by Sebastian Fawkes although there's a fair bit that is not war related. One of the best I read, Remembrance by Theresa Breslin, is actually written for teenagers but it has quite a wide scope as it's told from the point of view of a girl who starts off at home but ends up going to the Western Front as a nurse. Those are all first world war, most of the second world war ones I've read I read as a kid.
  11. I have finished Wicked and started The Bell Jar today, so am catching up. I may skip the next one depending on what we pick.
  12. Finished Wicked and started The Bell Jar
  13. How are you liking it? It's been my favourite book so far this year.
  14. Wow that was awesome. Best episode yet.
  15. I read this and The Secret Garden one after the other when I was a teenager and even though The Secret Garden is better known I prefered this one. I remember loving the film too.
  16. My books are just shoved in anywhere they will fit! I have 3 bookcases which I put my books in, but they are all shared. I've also devoted a shelf on my shelves to books and have a few piles littered around the house that need putting somewhere but that I have no place for!
  17. hmm I have discovered new authors but I still tend to read the same types of books, so my tastes haven't really changed. I was thinking about this earlier actually and how I'd like to try something that I would usually dismiss but don't really know where to start.
  18. When in Waterstones picking up Hearts and Minds- Amanda Craig for Mum A Matter of Death and Life- Andrey Kurkov jumped into my hand. Am now on the third part of Wicked too.
  19. I've had a little look. You may well have trouble as the book is out of print. The cheapest I could find it was a used copy for $320 from Amazon US even on ebay it's over
  20. Started Wicked today!
  21. Am something to write down all the books you want to read as a consequence. My list stands at about 14 I think!
  22. Head Trip- Jeff Warren Synopsis (from Amazon) This book will change the way you think, sleep, and dream for good. It is a book of psychology and neuroscience, and also of adventure wherein the author explores the extremes to which consciousness can be stretched, from the lucid dream to the quasi-mystical substratum of awareness known as the Pure Conscious Event. Replete with stylish graphics and brightened by comic panels conceived and drawn by the author, "Head Trip" is an instant classic, a brilliant and original description of the shifting experience of consciousness that's also a practical guide to enhancing creativity and mental health. This book does not just inform and entertain - it shows how every one of us can expand upon the ways we experience being alive. Review I must admit that although I found the topic of this book interesting I was glad when it was over. It was interesting enough, and pretty well written, in some parts it almost read like a novel, but I found Warren tended to dwell a bit much on one point and so it came across a bit waffley. Part of the problem for me though was it was a little over simplified- I had been expecting a bit more technical information, but I think for people with less knowledge of psychology or neurology it would make a good (if long!) introduction 2.5/5
  23. Finished Head Trip and started Wicked
  24. Picked up Wicked from the library and have about 30 pages of Head Trip left
  25. Hi guys. Am going to be reading The Bell Jar after Wicked 'cause a community I'm part of on Livejournal is doing it as a group read. So if anyone wants to join in, I know there are a few of you who had it on your lists.
