    Book News!

Cover girls: This year's book jacket fashions I always find book cover themes fascinating - it's a common joke at my book group that I generally don't like books with photo covers of "body parts", not gory photos I should add, but those pictures where the head of the person has been cropped off or it's just a photo of arms or legs, for example, a lot of Anita Shreve's covers fall into this style.
  3. I have. Never have I ever met a member of the Royal family.
  4. Home made asparagus flan with new potatoes and steamed veggies - I LOVE asparagus season.
  5. I've finished listening to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets today, and I'm about a third of the way through my re-read of Jane Eyre which I'm enjoying even more than the first time I read it!
  6. Home made cheese and onion soup with home made bread rolls, and home made rhubarb crumble.
  7. It's a Kindle download, so it doesn't really matter!
  8. I'm pleased to see good words for both The Time Machine and War of the Worlds as I downloaded free copies onto my Kindle a couple of weeks ago. Looking forward to them now I must admit, I'm a few books behind with the Cassandra Clare series - I've yet to read City of Lost Souls and I've only read the first in the Infernal Devices series, but I intend to rectify that when I go on holiday later in the year, as I read the first one while away a few years ago, and it was great holiday reading.
  9. Isn't it strange - I genuinely don't remember it being that long, I thought it was about 300 pages! I guess that's good as the pages must have flown by
  10. Toast and a latte at the coffee shop today, and we bought a gorgeous organic spelt sourdough loaf while we were out, so I will have having that toasted for breakfast tomorrow too - I know how fantastic toast is made with that loaf, and I'm already looking forward to breakfast tomorrow!
  11. At my book group, due to the rising costs of hiring the library in the evening, we can only afford to reserve one book for each of us each month, but as quite a few of us have ereaders, we also pick out a classic book so that it's either free to download, or most of us are likely to already own as a second book choice. This month, our main book is Room by Emma Donoghue, but I can't face picking it up at the moment so I'm currently re-reading our classic choice, Jane Eyre. Although I have a paperback copy somewhere, I downloaded a free Kindle version and have found it 557 pages long! I don't remember it being that long when I first read it a few years ago!!??
  12. I've just started a re-read of Jane Eyre myself - I suggested it as our classic choice for my book group last month and it got chosen, so it's a good opportunity to revisit it, although only my second reading, it's still one of the classics I was happy to pick up again.
  13. Oh dear, just 4/10 for me this week http://blog.waterstones.com/2013/04/waterstones-week-in-books-quiz-12th-april-2013/
  14. When I first started going out with my partner, he loaned me a few books to try, one of which was The Stone Raft by José Saramago. It was the first ever translated novel I'd read, and opened my reading horizons to a whole world of books that I would never have considered before, as well as introducing me to an author who I now admire immensely.
  15. Interesting review, Ian. I felt the same about the book when I read it in my late teens, but I with my favourite director bringing out a new film adaptation this year, I wonder whether to try it again in case I get along with it better now that I'm older.
  16. Neither have I. Never have I ever been abseiling.
  17. I put my earphones in at work, even if I don't put any music on as it tends to block out the majority of the ambient noise, although I do often play classical or instrumental music, such as jazz, flamenco, tango, etc.
  18. Woohoo! The British summer is here - no more snow, the temperature is warming up, and we're in the middle of a torrential thunderstorm!
  19. Well since it's my favourite book, I'm going to have to stand up for Girl Meets Boy by Ali Smith. I've said it many times before, but simply the most joyous book I've ever read.

    Me

Hi Emily! Welcome to BCF, I'm sure you find loads of recommendations around the boards - what sort of fiction do you like reading?

  23. I've actually read 9 our of the top 10 - the only one I haven't read is The Hobbit and that's because I didn't enjoy the LotR trilogy that much, and OH said if I didn't like them, then definitely not worth bothering with the prequel! I'm also surprised there are very few that I would refuse to read on there - usually with these lists, at least 20% of the books are ones I have no inclination to read at all, and wouldn't contemplate reading, it's much lower than that with this list.
