  1. I finally managed to read a bit of Ben Hur. I'm listening to the audiobook while I run, I honestly don't think I can finish it otherwise. Last time I tried reading it I didn't get too far, it's just not a book I enjoy. But I'm determined to get to the end this time...if only to be able to finally say I've read it and to tick it on the 1001 books to read list.
  2. I definitely plan on finishing it, it's amazing. I'm always impressed how all the details come together in these books.
  3. Read The Sign of Four by Arthur Conan Doyle...actually listened to about half of it at the gym and read the rest at home. I'm also making my way through A Storm of Swords (second part) which I'm enjoying so much!
  4. I'm very jealous on the weather report for London this morning...20 degrees???

Not that much, as it turned out, but a very pleasant spring day all the same. But it was absolutely freezing last night!

  5. I get them one book at a time and always read them in chronological order. If the series is long though, I'll always take a break betweem volumes...I tend to get bored if I read too much of the series.
  6. Crackers, cheese and grapes...such a lovely snack!
  7. I love seeing all the photos This is a photo of me taken on Christmas Day:
  8. Oh, it looks lovely! I love this type of editions for books, it's like they're even better!
  9. I got Ben-Hur from the library a few days ago (they had to get it from the basement for me!) so I could join the Kindle Klub discussions. I remember giving it a try a while back and found it very difficult to get through and eventually giving up on it. So it's my mission to finish it by the end of the month
  10. This is not funny anymore...the amount of studying I have to do in the next few weeks is becoming slightly insane!

Paxman is great! I've never read any of his books but I love UC and I loved the programme he did on Victorian art. :D

  14. Oh yes, that's the problem with these list...they just end up being HUGE! I can say I've recently started Sherlock Holmes, read the first one and it was really enjoyable And I loved Pride and Prejudice, although I need to give it a re-read sometime soon. I bought The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo from a second hand bookshop ages ago, still haven't started it, but I really, really want to soon. Definitely has to be a 2012 read
  15. Use them as excellent inspiration. I think I'll print them and take them to the library with me...I always go there and get the most random books possible, because I can't remember what I actually want to read
  16. Right...your lists are now copied on my laptop!
  17. Quite a few on your list that I also have on my wish list
  18. I actually wanted to read the next Sherlock Holmes story but it seems my library doesn't have it! I think I'll have to invest in the huge volume that holds all of them, or I'll never finish. Thanks for the reply as always
  19. Can I get paid already, so I can renew my subscription! *pout*

That IS very true...between booking my bus and train for the appointment in London at the end of Feb and the laptop itself, no spending should happen. But I like having the subscription here, it's the forum I'll never leave!

  20. Yes, that's exactly right, it felt a little too convenient. --- I knew getting a new laptop was a bad idea...my reading has just declined all of a sudden, the Internet is so distracting
  21. Author: Arthur Conan Doyle Title: A Study in Scarlet Book Description (amazon.co.uk) When Dr John Watson takes rooms in Baker Street with amateur detective Sherlock Holmes, he has no idea that he is about to enter a shadowy world of criminality and violence. Accompanying Holmes to an ill-omened house in south London, Watson is startled to find a dead man whose face is contorted in a rictus of horror. There is no mark of violence on the body yet a single word is written on the wall in blood. Dr Watson is as baffled as the police, but Holmes’s brilliant analytical skills soon uncover a trail of murder, revenge and lost love. Personal Note I’ll admit, reading the Sherlock Holmes books didn’t cross my mind until I fell in love with the TV show Sherlock. That being said, I liked “A Study in Scarlet” a lot and I’m looking forward to read the next books. It’s fast paced, I like the characters and it’s original. The one thing that bothered me was the sudden change of point of view and plot in the middle of the book. For a few pages, I was more than confused…but I did like how it all came together in the last pages. It’s a very short read, but enjoyable.
  22. New laptop, I finally have a functional screen! My first big purchase with my own money...so exciting :D

  23. Thought I'd share this - I definitely am one of the people who became interested in reading all the books after watching the TV show (the movies have had no impact on me, haven't even seen the first one). http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2012-01-17/benedict-cumberbatch%27s-sherlock-boosts-conan-doyle-book-sales
