  1. I saw Florence + The Machine last Sunday, it was brilliant! I love her, and I've been wanting to see her live for ages. The concert was great
  2. I love Traitor's Moon so far, I'd forgotten how much I like this series.
  3. I feel the same...the Epilogue just shouldn't be there. --- I just finished watching Four Lions. It was different than I had expected, thought it was quite good.
  4. I read the book so long ago I can't remember it very well...perhaps I should read it again. But I'm going to the movie, soon I hope, because of Martin Freeman
  5. Probably not I was actually thinking about this earlier...what I do remember from the book? And it's very little that I didn't already know after taking physics for too many years. It's like it refreshed those notions (particle/antiparticle for example) and it helped when I was reading, but I couldn't tell you what I read or explain it, unless I tried very, very hard and had the book in front of me. Interesting!
  6. I don't even have bookshelves where I live now I really should take your example... Ooooh, trips to Waterstones are always so nice!
  7. I find it admirable you manage to give away some of the books. I am rubbish at it...I have books I KNOW I won't read or I've read and won't reread and still can't part with them And I know they'd be better of in a charity shop or at a hospice!
  8. I loved the Black Holes chapter...although I think I understood most things minimally But it made sense while reading! --- Started Traitor's Moon (Nightrunner #3) last night...only read a few pages though, more today.
  9. Almost done with A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking. I really wasn't expecting to actually understand this book
  10. It was quite good, and it has a nice further reading list at the end of the book too
  11. Title: A History of British Serial Killing Author: David Wilson Book Description (amazon.co.uk) In this fascinating and informative new book, Professor David Wilson tells the stories of Britain's serial killers from Jack the Ripper to the extraordinary Suffolk Murders case. David Wilson has worked as a Prison Governor and as a profiler, and has been described as the UK's leading expert on serial killers. His work has led him to meet several of the UK's deadliest killers, and build up fascinating insights into what makes a serial killer - and who they are most likely to target. A vivid narrative history and a timely call for prison and social reform, Professor Wilson's new book is a powerful and gripping investigation of Britain's serial murderers. Personal Note To say I didn't enjoy the book would be a lie, but I feel it didn't quite do what it had intended. It felt too short and for each group of the victims, I would have liked to read more. I did think it was a good portrait of the society at various times, and I particularly liked the discussion about "cop culture". I also thought it was very good to divide the victims in certain groups - I just would have liked more details and even less about the killers themselves.
  12. This book looks so good, I'm writing it down for my next library stop!
  13. I've heard so many good things about The Time Traveler's Wife, really have to start it too! Hope you enjoy it
  14. Title: The Casual Vacancy Author: J.K. Rowling Book Description (Goodreads) A BIG NOVEL ABOUT A SMALL TOWN... When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? Personal Note It was my intention to read this book with an open mind and try and put aside that the author is J.K. Rowling who wrote the books that I grew up and that have had such a huge influence in my life. I'm very glad I gave it a chance and basically just went at it without having any real expectations. The characters have depth and they're all people that exist in any community, big or small. There's something I noticed while reading it - I think I probably perceive the book a bit different now, after being in the UK for a couple of years. There are certain aspects, like the Fields, that probably wouldn't make so much sense to me otherwise or I wouldn't maybe have such a vivid image of it. I found the end very sad, but also very fitting - it gives the book more credibility. Loved the book!
  15. I should check and see if there's a translation I haven't had a chance to really get into it yet, I've barely been home a few hours in the last 3 days (oops!) but it's interesting! It's supposed to take the serial killing and look at it from the point of the victim instead of the killer - who are the more vulnerable people and why? It's good so far!
  16. What I've decided in the end is to start a new book but still set aside maybe 45min-an hour every day and get through this. I'm just too far ahead to stop. Also I'm glad (ok, that's not a good word) that I'm not the only one who had trouble with it!
  17. My compulsive need to finish every book I start probably means I won't finish anymore books by the end of the year! I started The Children's Book at least a month ago...halfway through I decided to read something else, but didn't return it to the library so I could finish it. Now I'm back to it, but I just can't get into it at all. I want to finish it because it's on the 1001 Books List, and I'm already 300 pages in, so it would be a pity not to. I have to take it back to the library soon (although I can renew it a second time) so I really must be done with it. I fear my book related activity for a while will just center on this
  18. I finished this a few days ago and loved it! I even got over the no wizards part (*sigh* I wish there was more Harry Potter to read). I loved the realness of the story, the fact that this town could be anywhere and each of the families described can be found in any community.
  19. I finished The Casual Vacancy and now I'll continue The Children's Book - must be done with it by the end of the week! I'm about halfway through, but it's just so...slow.
  20. Me, me, me! I still hope I'll get my Hogwarts letter Welcome to the forum!
