  1. I swear I didn't know it was one of your favourites Peacefield! I forget these things! I'll read it when I'm done with *puts on Transylvanian accent* Drawk-u-la! You two (PF & BJ) should go look at my newest post in the 'Has Anyone Read' thread. Srsly. I wrote it before I saw this thread.
  2. Has anybody read The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl? 'Boston - 1865 - A small group of elite scholars prepares to introduce Dante's vision of Hell to America. But so does a murderer.' Seems to be a historical-fiction crime novel, featuring THE DIVINE COMEDY WAHEY! I bought it because it was pretty, said 'Dante' a few times and was only €1.50. Apparently, according to the cover, it's an international bestseller. Anyone read it? ETA: Nevermind! I decided to search the forum and see that BookJumper has already asked about it in this thread. Apologies! Peacefield said she liked it - that's good enough for me.
  3. I bought something called The Dante Club because it was pretty and only €1.50.
  4. I appear never to have posted in this thread! In no order: Gerard Whelan - Out Of Nowhere Elizabeth Winthrop - Castle In The Attic and Battle For The Castle (they go together) Colin Dann - A Legacy Of Ghosts Chris Wooding - Catchman (Point Horror Unleashed) Victor Kelleher - Del Del
  5. I am two little boys, curious about the house and hoard of a deceased miserly old man - but we suspect somebody is going in stealing his possessions!
  6. If you don't like the rules, join another forum. :eek2: This isn't a forum to provide 'solutions', that's like turning up at your local library's book club with your english homework and saying 'here, how do I write this essay?' They'd laugh at you. It's a forum for the discussion of books, not homework help. That's what Sparknotes is for. Not to mention that half the people on here don't write reviews, let alone critically analysing a novel in terms of it's langauge, imagery and so forth.
  7. Got a book in the post - Colin Dann's 'A Legacy Of Ghosts'. I spent YEARS trying to track this childhood favourite down, and in the end it was on this forum I got my answer. With that, I still never saw the cover I remembered, but I did remember it was a hardback book, so when I ordered it on Amazon I took a chance on the pictureless hardback. It just arrived today and the second I saw it it all came flooding back, Old Mackie's House, Mr. Bone.... it's the exact cover I remembered and ahhh how I loved this book. I'm so happy to own a copy :eek2: Seems to be a first edition too, that's nice. And makes sense, since I read the 'new' copy in the library, and this is the same. So it's nearly 20 years old! I'm probably quite lucky to have found it.
  8. I ended up reading 140 pages :eek2:
  9. Read 70 pages of Dracula so far tonight, and will read another 30 or so - plan to read at least 150 tomorrow and finish it on Tuesday, to begin it's sequel Tuesday evening. I'm now well past any point I ever made it to before and I do really love it - it's definately on the list of books I want to acquire an old copy of from the earlier half of the 1900's.
  10. I love baking but I can't really do anything other than queen cakes as my brother won't eat anything else (he's a fussy eater) and there's no one else to eat them. I do like making scones, apple tarts, cookies and chocolate muffins, but due to ridiculous amounts of practise my queen cakes are the nicest. I don't even need to measure the stuff anymore - I can tell from using the same bags and packets over and over exactly how much I need just by looking. So it takes less than 15 mins to start from scratch and have the first lot already baking in the oven
  11. I agree that older Disney movies were more serious, or least they weren't so fluffy. Even look at The Fox and the Hound - that's terribly upsetting and it's not even anywhere near as bad as the book!
  12. It's Robert Rankin meets Neil Gaiman. Simple as.
  13. I finished The Gates by John Connolly. It kicked literary arse and took names. That is all.
  14. Lion King - Hamlet connection is the only one I had actually ever heard of. I thought it was the most famous. Additionally, r.e. Nala, Sarabi and Simba all dying too - now that I would pay to see A Disney movie where everyone dies. Except the baboon. Nice. Indeed, just like we'd be really grateful for any participation in the forum whatsoever!!!
  15. My mojo is just a little lazy at the moment. I'm currently forcing my way throug Dracula (I am absolutely loving it, once I pick it up, it's the 'picking up' bit I'm finding hard) but John Connolly's latest book is helping as I find he's very easy to read (and he cracks me up.)
  16. I'm an 11 year old boy trying to stop the gates of hell being opened by my neighbours, with the aid of my dog and a demon.
  17. It's my favourite name, which is why I usually use it online. But I recently emailed an author to do with reviews and things, and I had to say, 'this is Nollaig (Roxi on BCF)', and it just sounds weird, so I'd rather use my actual name. It's more formal.

  18. Haha! Most people can't get used to my real name, they keep calling me Roxi

  19. I bought the new young adult-ish John Connolley book! 'The Gates' (of Hell are about to open, mind the gap). I haven't read any of his strictly adult stuff, but I spotted this with art done in the exact style of The Book Of Lost things, and saw the first chapter talks about the creation of the universe and how religion is probably wrong about some things to do with that, so I HAD TO HAVE IT.
  20. Thank you! I put a lot of effort into it

I'm good! I've booked a ticket to see Mika in Dublin, and I'm booking another to see him in Belfast two days earlier. So I'm going up with a girl from uni - 5 day trip! Day 1 - Travel to Belfast, Day 2 - Belfast gig, Day 3 - Travel to Dublin, Day 4 - Dublin gig, Day 5 - travel home XD

    Should be awesome.

  21. Tom that picture is one of the best I've seen by you, it's fabulous.
  22. I finally ordered one of my childhood favourites on Amazon, the one the lovely people here at BCF helped me track down - A Legacy Of Ghosts by Colin Dann. I had a fiver left on my voucher and a 'very good' hardback copy just squeezed into my price range. I'm really looking forward to reading it again - also the hardback product info had no image, I wonder will it be the hardback I remember? And how much of the story will come back to me as I read it?
  23. I've merged this post with the 'Has Anyone Read' thread.
  24. I'm gonna have mash. Not sure what else yet, but mash is definately occuring.
  25. I've read another 50 pages of Dracula, and planning to read at least another 50 tonight - determined to get through it before starting it's sequel!!
