  1. Mood for me as well. It also depends on what I have on hand or I might just buy a book on a wim in a shop. But I have a bad tendency to look for reviews on the internet, not for ideas (which would be good!) but to check that what I've chosen really is a 'good' book and that I'm, in a way, entitled to like it Crazy and stupid I know, so I'm trying hard to fight this tendency and just trust my feelings and moods. *laughs*
  2. Well I dont usually have one, only during winter holydays when I spend a few days in the countryside. I wish it lasted longer, its bliss
  3. Ditto. Once in a while I'll get an urge to have a nice warm bath with some music and a good book but it takes me ages to set up (getting everything I need, setting up my laptop close by to get the music but not too close so as not to get water on it, getting the water at just the right temperature...) and then I'm way too nervous about letting the book fall in to read comfortably *cracks up* In a nice warm bed is the best, or beside the fire *grins*
  4. Good to know you enjoyed it Katie. Though I see what you mean about it being a bit slow/ not focused enough on a character. I was a bit frustrated by that myself, as Maryam seems to be the focus point (tenuous, I know) but I would rather have followed more closely the girls. At the end of the day though, it is more driven by its themes than the plot. I am very interested in those themes and felt she handled them really well so I loved the book. But I guess the story itself can seem a bit dull.

    Hello

It's just a name we used with some friends in a group exercise once... I dont know why but it kind of stuck with me *laughs*

    Hello

Hello and welcome Tintin! I love your name! Fan of the comics?
  7. I have finally given up on L'africain and wish I had done it sooner instead of stupidly resisting *laughs* I have gone on to A thousand splendid suns by Khaled Hosseini, which so far is amazing *grins*
  8. How are you finding it Katie? It can be a bit slow at times but I loved it!
  9. Havent read much lately I seem to have dedicated my time to other things... My problem is I tend to fully dedicate myself to one thing or another by periods, rather than doing a little of everything on the same day. If I'm going to read then it wont be for just an hour, I'll spend the whole evening after work enjoying a good book. I've never been much of a 'going through lots of activities in a day' person. Which means if something else catches my interest for a whie then my reading tends to disappear Though maybe its also because the book I'm currently reading, L'africain by Le Cezio isnt really grabing my attention (havent picked it up in a week) but I'm still reluctant to just abandon it and go on to the next.
  10. That's lovely from him! Is he a book lover as well? Seriously though, a house would never feel 'right' to me if there werent books everywhere! My whole family enjoys books and we always have had shelves of them in nearly every room: the sitting room, the bedrooms, my parents 'studies', even the bathroom *cracks up* I never understood how there could be no book in sight at all in a house...
  11. I cant remember wether I've read books in one sitting... But I have read a lot of them very quickly, in a day or so, stopping only for food *laughs* I do that when a book is really gripping (and I have the time...) but I usually regret it afterwards. It feels like I've rushed to story too much instead of enjoying it.

    Hello

    Hello and welcome Feidhlim!
  14. Hi Paul, welcome!
  15. Hello and welcome Chrissy!
  16. Well I've never seen anything wrong with my sense of taste but I probably wouldnt know the difference and I do tend to prefer anything that's very chocolatey, spicy, full of bearnaise... or otherwise having a very strong taste. And I never felt a difference in how my food tastes when I have a cold... people around me are always moaning about not feeling or tasting anything when they have a cold but I never notice the difference. Actually I'd looked into 'smell disorders' at one point when I was annoyed with it and it seems many people are that way (there's even a name for it, anosmia for no smell at all and disnosmia for a very low level of it I think) and it seems the "if you didnt have a sense of smell you wouldnt taste your food at all" is largely exagerated: it is true in some cases but many people with no sense of smell do taste their food. I guess it must be a question of degree and of sensitivity to both taste and smell. Apparently when you eat smell and taste mix up and you cant tell the difference, but they are seperate. Only as smell plays a big part, for those who sense it, people with a cold will feel 'deprived' as they only have one sense working and by comparison will think their food has no taste. People who dont smell anyhting in the first place however are used to rely only on the taste, and perhaps they develop it more. Maybe if we could smell we'd suddenly realise we've only been half tasting everything, but we dont know the difference. *laughs* Does that sound right Roxi and Angel? Good for you! Let's not get trapped too soon *laughs*
  17. Well I've been like that as long as I can remember and my dad doesnt have much more than me so I guess it's just some kind of genetic, permanent thing unfortunately. As Angel says it can get dangerous. I doubt I would smell a gas leek for example. Though strangely I do smell some food when it is cooking (especially when it has spices in it I think). Or am I just imagining that? *laughs* That's a nice family history! *cracks up* I saw your explanation on that one earlier in this thread... Must have been quite an evening! Are you dead set against marriage or just feel its too early for that?
  18. Very impressive! And I can definitely see how that big white bit would seem discouraging
  19. Hello and welcome Kay! wow, where do you keep that one spread out?! So much patience is beyond my grasp *laughs*
  20. Me neither, though I dont usually go to such length to prove my point. *laughs*
  21. Ok, this thread looks fun so here are mine: 1. I have no sense of smell: you could put rotten tomatoes, flowers or a great perfume under my nose... I wouldnt know the difference 2. Like a few others on here I have very few friends which I rarely see as we all live in different countries. Seeing that there were others like me in this thread gave me a boost *laughs* 3. I've never dyed or otherwise altered my hair... Though I've always wanted to change it completely cut-wise. Might take the plunge someday... 4. I'm an introvert and would love to somehow shut up that cautious, analysing little voice in my head. 5. I eat about anything but I'm a very fussy drinker: nerver liked coke, coffee, tea or most alcools...It can get very complicated when I'm out for drinks or at a party
  22. Ok, I have to retract my previous statement then... I would never lie about books I havent read but in some cases, I might not be keen to admit to reading some stuff *laughs* Like at one point, not so long ago actually, I was obsessed by Harry Potter fanfiction. Now, I dont know whether I'd lie outright about it as it never came up, but I'd certainly try to minimise it ... Should I have stayed quiet here too? *goes off to hide under the carpet*
  23. Well, I read and I'm impressed! And I was definitely looking at your read list. The number of books you went through in september and october... I wish I read at that rate. Though I would never lie about it. What would the point be? I'm not that surprised with these findings though... A lot of people will say lie about many small things to impress in some circumstances... Maybe they are even the same who boast about not reading to their friends, who go on to boast about shakespeare in a job interview or a date *laughs*
  24. Is that really a childrens book ?? Goes to show the limit can be quite thin *laughs*
  25. *laughs* I'm glad to have contributed to your next lifetime's To be read list... You wouldnt want to be caught without that! Anne Frank certainly seems both so close to any adolescent reader and so exceptional... Just a normal youg girl caught up in exceptional circumstances really. Do let me know what you think if you ever get round to this
