Tom Rob Smith > Kind 44 (Child 44) synopsis from amazon With so many new books in the crime and thriller field vying for our attention, alert readers need all the help they can get. In the case of Tom Rob Smith's Child 44, the numerous glowing reviews were preceded by a lively word of mouth on the book. The latter can often be misleading, but not in this case -- this is a very exciting debut. It is set in the Soviet Union and in the year 1953; Stalin's reign of terror is at its height, and those who stand up against the might of the state vanish into the labour camps – or vanish altogether. With this background, it is an audacious move on Tom Rob Smith’s part to put his hero right at the heart of this hideous regime, as an officer in no less than the brutal Ministry State Security. Leo Demidov is, basically, an instrument of the state -- by no means a villain, but one who tries to look not too closely into the repressive work he does. His superiors remind him that there is no crime in Soviet Union, and he is somehow able to maintain its fiction in his mind even as he tracks down and punishes the miscreants. The body of a young boy is found on railway tracks in Moscow, and Demidov is quickly informed that there is nothing to the case. He quickly realises that something unpleasant is being covered over here, but is forced to obey his orders. However, things begin to quickly unravel, and this ex-hero of state suddenly finds himself in disgrace, exiled with his wife Raisa to a town in the Ural Mountains. And things will get worse for him -- not only the murder of another child, but even the life and safety of his wife. my thoughts The book starts very grippping right away and the story kept me interested all the way, even though it's not very fast paced. It's also very interesting at the story is set at a cruel time that actually happened and not even so long ago. Rating: 4/5

Yes they were they mostly are. Sometimes you can only shake your head and wonder about why they change most titles so much

It was okay, the gnomes are really cute but the movie could have been a lot better. Somehow I expected it to be funnier.

Mark T. Sullivan > Panic (The purification ceremony) synopsis from amazon Whilst on a deer-hunting trip in the wild landscape of British Columbia, Diana Jackman and her party find themselves the prey of a diabolical killer. Trapped deep in the snow and completely cut off from the outside world, they set out in pursuit of the most dangerous animal they have ever hunted. my thoughts A really good idea, very gripping. I read this book in such a short time and just couldn't put it down. Then why only 3 out 5 in the rating? I'd say it's the bad translations fault as I read it in german, though I can't say if it would be the same writing I had problems with if I had read the book in english. Either way, a good idea with a few bumps along the way but still full of suspense. Rating: 3/5

now starting Kimberly Raye > Dead End Dating and I also ordered the second Mercy Thompson book -
Bad Blood is still a good read, I just think that there was so much more potential to the story. But well, it's a YA novel and I probably would have loved it, if a was younger. I really like Karin Slaughters books, they're quite drastic at times though and therefor notso suited for readers with a weak stomach. I lend a few book to my oldest aunt and she was quite shocked that her little niece would read books like these

Patricia Briggs > Moon Called synopsis from amazon 'I didn't realize he was a werewolf at first. My nose isn't at its best when surrounded by axle grease and burnt oil ...' Mercedes Thompson runs a garage in the Tri-Cities. She's a mechanic, and a damn good one, who spends her spare time karate training and tinkering with a VW bus that happens to belong to a vampire. Her next-door neighbour is an alpha werewolf - literally, the leader of the pack. And Mercy herself is a shapeshifter, sister to coyotes. As such, she's tolerated by the 'wolves but definitely down the pecking order. As long as she keeps her eyes down and remembers her place, the pack will leave her in peace. Hardly a normal situation, but then, Mercy Thompson is not exactly normal herself...and her connection to the world of things that go bump in the night is about to get her into a whole lot of trouble. my thoughts I liked this book very much and read it almost in one sitting as I couldn't put down and I will definately read the rest of the series. Rating: 5/5 Series: Mery Thompson 1

Rhiannon Lassiter > Böses Blut (Bad Blood) synopsis from amazon In an abandoned house in the Lake District, a cupboard door opens into a playroom. Buried in dust is a collection of children's books in which the names of characters have been savagely crossed out. Here three children played a make believe game, sacrificing their dreams and wishes to make what they believed come true. But the game was never finished and in the woods behind the house something waits, hungry for the only food it knows. Now a new family has come to the house. Soon they will discover themselves in the game. But they do not know the rules. And they are the pawns, not the players ...A story with the terror and suspense of The Blair Witch Project. my thoughts I did like the idea but it wasn't as well translated into the book as I would have liked it to be. First it takes quite some time until something happens and end is very rushed and not very well concluded. Rating: 3/5

Karin Slaughter > Verstummt (Triptych) synopsis from amazon When Atlanta police detective Michael Ormewood is called out to a murder scene at the notorious Grady Homes, he finds himself faced with one of the the most brutal killings of his career: Aleesha Monroe is found in the stairwell in a pool of her own blood, her body horribly mutilated. As a one-off killing it's shocking, but when it becomes clear that it's just the latest in a series of similar attacks, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are called in, and Ormewood is forced into working with Special Agent Will Trent of the Criminal Apprehension Team - a man he instinctively dislikes. But then, only twenty-four hours later, the violence Ormewood sees around him every day explodes in his own back yard. And it seems the mystery behind Monroe's death is inextricably entangled with a past that refuses to stay buried ... my thoughts I really liked this book, an interesting plot which kept me in the dark for a very long time and surprised me quite well in the end. Rating: 4/5 Series: Will Trent 1

Cassandra Clare > City of Bones synopsis from amazon Sixteen-year-old Clary Fray is an ordinary teenager, who likes hanging out in Brooklyn with her friends. But everything changes the night she witnesses a murder, committed by a group of teens armed with medieval weaponry. The murderous group are Shadowhunters, secret warriors dedicated to driving demons out of this dimension and back into their own. Drawn inexorably into a terrifying world, Clary slowly begins to learn the truth about her family - and the battle for the fate of the world. my thoughts A really nice YA fantasy novel, which is hard to put down. I will definately go on reading the series. Rating: 4/5 Series: Mortal Instrument 1
