Saturday: 100 pages of Risteily by Mats Strandberg

Oh, I didn't mean to imply she was suffering from depression. I only meant that in my viewing she was having some sort of mental issue. I was talking about depression because it's another mental issue and I have some knowledge of it. I didn't in any way mean to imply that you were in any way intolerant! Our readings are so different from one another. Like I said, maybe Townsend didn't mean it to be read as a story of someone who is having mental issues. I mean maybe she was just lazy and I gave more meaning to her staying in bed than there really was. It's so many years ago that I can't really remember what the case was in actuality, if it was ever really explained in the book. It's just that now I'm viewing it as a rather sad story about someone who's breaking down in some way.

Books do Furnish a Room's Book Blog 2017

What an interesting poetry book! Something I would find easily approachable and entertaining! I'm Caucasian but I can certainly relate to some of the things, not being a thin beauty in any general terms Thanks for the review, I'll keep an eye out for this -
Your minions are actually doing their revision on a Saturday, quietly and nicely? You and Steven have done a great job with them, I congratulate you! Not fun for them that they have their important exams coming up, but that might mean you get a little time for yourself as they'll be busier She really doesn't like sleeping, does she? 'Screw you, bed, I'll feast on you! I want walkies and I want to fetch!' Well done! Only 52 of the same to go Yes, one thing at a time Have fun!!

Oh yay! I hope there will be no great big distractions and you can finish it in one go! Obi and Jojo, behave <3

Yep, Konmari and BuJo are mutually inclusive, I think. If one can put it that way I bet it feels great to have everything in order! I sometimes have to look for things for a while... The one thing that's kind of happened is that right before I go to bed, I will organize my table and some other places so that in the morning it's not all messy, because it's annoying to have to clean up in the morning when one has only just woken up and one is in a hurry to have breakfast and coffee and then go to work. I need more places where to store things. I think it'll be better once I get my own apartment, eventually, with just my own stuff, and everything's just mine and nothing belongs to a landlord The work place will sort itself out (or rather you and your co-workers will do it ) once there's more storage and more staff

If I need to order books online, from the list I use only Bookdepository. (The other one I use is a Scandinavian website so no use on here)

Doing a bit of end-of-the-year summary things for 2016, as always. My goals for 2016 were mostly these: 1) read more books off the TBR pile than you acquire. - Failed miserably I read 5 books off the TBR list and acquired 83 books! 2) maybe try at least 2 Book Box books. - Failed. Didn't try any. 3) visit many new-to-me libraries here in Helsinki. - Failed. Didn't do this to the extent I was planning on. Having said that, I can't be too hard on myself, because I started a new full-time job and so I obviously had way less time to dedicate to reading. Also, my mojo was running AWOL a lot of the time. - All in all, I read 52 books. Which is a rather low number for me as the statistics of read books in previous years show: 2008: 77 2009: 118 2010: 120 2011: 91 2012: 83 2013: 78 2014: 100 2015: 75 - As for the books I read. Rating: 1/5: 4 2/5: 9 3/5: 15 4/5: 20 5/5: 4 5/5 books in chronological order: The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster Dry by Augusten Burroughs (re-read) This Is Life by Dan Rhodes - by far my most favorite read of the year! Far from True by Linwood Barclay 4/5 books in chronological order: A Boy Called Christmas by Matt Haig One of Us: The Story of Anders Breivik and the Massacre in Norway by Åsne Seierstad Villi Ami (#Just William) by Richmal Crompton How to Look for a Lost Dog by Ann M. Martin Confess by Colleen Hoover Broken Promise by Linwood Barclay The Last of the Bowmans by J. Paul Henderson Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs (re-read) A Mother's Reckoning - Living in the Aftermath of the Columbine Tragedy by Sue Klebold Upstairs Downstairs by John Hawkesworth Kevyesti kipsissä by Veera Vaahtera Onnellisesti eksyksissä by Veera Vaahtera Sattumalta sinun by Veera Vaahtera Rakkautta, vahingossa by Veera Vaahtera Veljen vaimo by Henna Helmi Heinonen Hylätyt by Michael Hjorth & Hans Rosenfeldt Varaudu pahimpaan by Petteri Nuottimäki Nina Is Not Ok by Shappi Khorsandi The Absent One by Jussi Adler-Olsen This One Is Mine by Maria Semple And the worst, 1/5: Edith's Diary by Patricia Highsmith The Vintage Springtime Club by Beatrice Meier Kun mustarastas laulaa by Linda Olsson Charlotte Street by Juliette Mead - I didn't read any books on the Rory Gilmore challenge list, nor did I read any 1001 Books books I did, however read two books from the FTBC, which is great - also read 12 off the wishlist, so that's at least something. 46 read books were library books - I read only 7 debuts. - Female authors ruled this year: 34 books I read were by female authors, and only 18 were by male authors. Two of those were co-written by two men, though, so maybe I should say 20 books - I read 34 books (more than half) in their original language, which is good. I read 26 books in Finnish, and 26 books in English The familiar vs. new-to-me authors also wanted to compromise this year: 26/26 - I read 9,5 books by Finnish author(s), which is pretty good in my opinion. The 0,5 is for Petteri Nuottimäki who was born in Finland but moved to Sweden when he was a kid, and I don't know whether he identifies himself as a Finn or a Swede or a mix. His book was great, though, so that's the most important thing That's it for me! Bye bye 2016, I won't miss you!! BYE FELICIA!

That's definitely true, different strokes for different folks

That's what I keep hearing, but it's such a huuuuuge book! I should totally get to Anais Nin but there are so many books to read.. It's a bother! Happy reading, Anna! Thanks Inver, and I wish you a very merry reading year in 2017, too! Happy reading year in 2017 to you too, my darling! Dogs will hopefully feature in this thread in the future, too, but pee might not That's for other instances Oh lordy... Color coding is very important, so don't sell yourself short I'm very much looking forward to seeing your reading log of 2017, but no pressure! And it's a lot of copy+pasting in the end, isn't it. It's the idea of setting it up that's more intimidating than the actual thing! Although if you're still having computer problems... Take your time, babe!! I read 'all other passions and fruits' Thanks peace, and a very happy reading year to you, too! My lists are just basic copy+pasting from last year, and I've left quite a few out this year, actually! It's easier to breathe now Are you going to set up a new log for this year?

Thanks all for popping in, work was not much fun this week and I didn't feel like doing much in the week... I'm catching up with things this weekend, as Friday was a bank holiday over here and so it's a wonderfully long weekend I've had to cull some emoticons. Thanks chesilbeach, and a very happy reading year to you, too! I've gone for a much simple thread this year, not having added reading challenges that I didn't do anything with last year. Keeping it nice and simple this year! Thanks Brian Ditched a lot of them this year, quite happily! I wish you a great reading year, as well! Yes, perhaps too many.... It didn't help that I acquire 83 books last year (and I've been really good at not acquiring too many books in the past 2-3 years before 2016!) and only read maybe 5 books off the TBR. This year I'm trying not to buy as much, and I'll try and read more off the TBR and not only read library books... The Rory list in this thread is the definitive one, with books from the latest season, yes It's three different lists combined, and I got it off Kylie, who did the combining at one point some years ago. Kudos to Kylie! You are welcome to pinch it This scares me to high heavens becauce I'm not very good at science at all and I fear it'll all go over my head. And I'm saying this even though I just recently read someone's review on the book and they said that Bryson uses layman's terms as he's no scientist himself and it's readable. This, too, scares me! And it's not good because I do want to read it and I do want to love it!! I got it because of the Rory list, haha The size is daunting.... I need to have more faith in myself! I want to read this but a friend of mine borrowed it some years ago and I don't know if she's already read it so she could return it... I do love my thrillers and psychological stuff, so I'm looking forward to this one! I've only read Sputnik Sweetheart, which I gave 3/5 after reading, but the novel's stayed with me for years now and I would now rate it at 4/5, if I could. The Ferris Wheel thing, wow!! Coincidentally I was reading the Murakami thread on here just the other day and I got the feeling that I really want to move along with his novels, but I have my library books which I want to read and return before getting to my TBR... Sigh!

Happy reading in 2017, Little Pixie!

There's a bit of a difference there, yes, in the longevity, regarding both time and space... Wait till you get to the episode where Wild is relevant Yep, there's Stephen King there Loved reading your post, first saying there's no Stephen King and then having to edit Oh and did you notice Stiff is also on the list? That's how I got to reading the book. Wouldn't have known about it otherwise. I think it's a Rory gem! But big YAY for you going for the list! And now I must explain a little: There are three different lists, and originally I was doing all the three, all the way till the end of last year. Then it seemed rather silly because one could just combine all the three, and add the new titles from the new season. Kylie has made the combined list and she was very nice and gave it to me when I asked prettily The reason why you might not have noticed all the references of all the titles on the combined list: some references are subtle and you might not notice them until you're watching the series for the fourth time There are so many references there's just no way of getting them all on your first watch! Also, I think some references are of the movies, but people have listed the book version on the book list. In addition to that, someone (I can't remember who, I have to check it out) made a list many, many years ago, of a number of books that s/he/they thought Rory would read. So some are books that have not actually been mentioned in the series. Now, if you think that's just complete bullsh*t, I understand. You don't have to do that list. I personally went for it because I thought there were some great titles on the list, and I thought, it never hurts to have more material to read from I'll go back and see the links to the original posts and I'll edit this post to add them here, so you can check out the original sources and then decide what you're going to do! Edit: Oh, and while we call the challenge the Rory Gilmore reading challenge (because she is the 'main' reader in the series), you'll have found out by now that all the titles, mentioned by any one of the characters are on the list. So the Sue Grafton novels were mentioned by Sookie, for example. Edit: Sad news: the web pages from which I copied my lists are all gone. I now have no original references for them Edit: Oh My God I googled Rory Gilmore's reading challenge and in one of the links, the person who's listed the books on the website gives THIS FORUM and the specific RG reading challenge thread of ours as the source :D Check this out!

That's great, bobbly! Does that mean that you can buy new books now and put them in the wardrobe? I have to say, I've kind of forgotten about Konmari at the moment, and I'm all about BuJo now But Konmari would approve, as all the post-its and other paper bits and pieces are finally getting put in one place and I'll be way more organized now
-
Oh wow, you're watching fast! Yep, it's... complicated That was a huge huge thing back in the day! And how the season ended, and one had to wait for the next season... It was just horrible Horribleeeeee! I never noticed the tallness, but I did notice that she had a bum all of a sudden. Oh god I hope that's ... I'm sorry, I'm not that superficial usually but I couldn't help but notice the bum! And not in any negative way, because it was a good bum. Oh dear, have I said too much ... I was just watching the one episode where Rory is kissed by the lord, and Kim's saying to Lorelai, that she was kissed in the grocerystore... 'Where we buy our food!!' Oh yeah And how Richard's getting them mixed sometimes. During the first season he was confused between two maids, and Lorelai found it baffling because they were of different sexes 'One is a woman, and one is a man!' 'So?' Yep that was so cool There's hope for the rest of us! Edit: It's so much fun talking to you about this, as you're watching it for the first time, and you seem to love the series and love talking about it. It's like I get to see the show through the eyes of a new-beginner, and it's actually making me watch the show in a bit of a different way now, as I'm re-watching it

I started doing this on my Christmas holiday but then I accidentally clicked the wrong icon and all vanished Here's hoping I get it right this time! Favourite read? - Without a doubt, This Is Life by Dan Rhodes! Favourite author? - I want to say Dan Rhodes because he wrote my favorite book of 2016, but I'll say Linwood Barclay instead: he always gets my mojo going if I have problems, and he did it last year as well! Most read author? - Rather surprisingly a Finnish author: Veera Vaahtera, by 4 novels. Favourite book cover? - Be Frank with Me by Julia Claiborne Johnson Book you abandoned (if there was more than one, the one you read least of)? - I can't remember the one I read least of... I don't usually remember the books I abandon. I remember the most recent one I abandoned in 2016, but I'm thinking it's a great book and I just wasn't in the right mood, so I don't want to name and shame it on here. I'll leave this blank because I don't remember the bad ones that I abandoned, and I don't want to name and shame the good ones that I abandoned. Book that most disappointed you? - Slammed by Colleen Hoover and Bridget Jones's Baby by Helen Fielding. Slammed because I'd read Confess by the same author only a few months before, and I'd loved it so much, and then Slammed was really mediocre and in my opinion, insubstantial. Bridget Jones's Baby because I've loved the first three novels and this one was just such a disappointment. The movie was better! Funniest book? - This is Life by Dan Rhodes Favourite literary character? - I'm really bad at remembering literary characters when there's 52 books to remember from.. I will say Le Machine from This Is Life Favourite children's book? - The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster Favourite classic? - I didn't read any, unless The Phantom Tollbooth counts. Favourite non-fiction book? - One of Us: The Story of Anders Breivik and the Massacre in Norway by Åsne Seierstad Favourite biography? - I didn't read any (I did read memoirs and such like.) Favourite collection of short stories? - N/A Favourite poetry collection? - N/A Favourite illustrated book? - The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster Favourite publisher? - I don't notice these things Favourite audiobook? - N/A Favourite re-read? - Dry by Augusten Burroughs

Feeling out of control is not that nice But I tell you, the Bullet Journal might help you with that. I only started it on Tuesday and I already feel more in control, and I've already done some things that I've postponed and postponed once again for some time now. And Brian said in the BuJo thread that he finds going through his BuJo therapeutic... So maybe this could be your new therapist: BuJo! 184... Well, I would say it's manageable, and it's smaller than mine, but if the number gives you any anxiety, then yes, maybe book buying is banned for a while. Oh I hope your mojo returns with a vengeance and you won't even feel like buying new books as you'll be whizzing through your TBR Oh, housework can wait... Put your minions to it Happy BuJoing! And I hope you get some reading done, too Looking forward to seeing your new reading log!

The thing is, when I read this book some years ago, I really enjoyed it! I seem to be in the minority here If I'd been doing all the housework for 17 years and had a husband like Brian, and the kids were finally gone, who knows maybe I would've liked to take to bed, too! I think Eva's felt very isolated in her own home, within her own family, and she's gone a bit bonkers. I've suffered depression in the past so I know something about what it's like when it's all not that great. Townsend deals with it in a funny way as she always does, but when you get down to it, a mental issue is a serious thing. But maybe that's just how I'm reading it and not the way Townsend meant it at all. In any case, I wasn't going anywhere with it, so I'll re-read it some other time I then picked up Risteily by Mats Strandberg. A very popular Swedish novel, that's made its way to Finland. It's about a Sweden-Finland-Sweden cruise that goes horribly wrong... I'm not sure if it's appropriate reading material for me as I'm going on a cruise in two weeks! Oh boy, footnotes can make one punch oneself in the eye The Kindle version sounds like a winner And that's a good tip, re: borrowing the book from the library, and not patronizing at all! I will take your advice for sure, thanks! I was going through all the new 2017 reading logs and noticed you'd not started one. I wish you would, but no pressure But yes, it might inspire you to read more

Hello dear poppyshake! Goodness me, Jänet's the last person to have commented your thread and that was back in September! I did read your latest reviews earlier and added some titles to my wishlist (namely these: Old Wives' Tale and The House at the End of Hope Street. I was also going to add Wake Up, Sir! but found that I'd already done so, based on Goodreads' recommendation), but I somehow never actually commented on the reviews and earlier posts! Will do so now. Ever so sorry for resurrecting this thread if you'd already celebrated the fact that it's been so long since the last time, that you don't need to feel obliged to continue with the reviews Culling your emoticons, because I can't cull mine, hehe! (Actually, had to cull a few of mine, too!) For the life of me I can't remember if I've already asked: how's the computer these days? The amount of hours you spend by that oven and your bakings inside the oven, you would've already gone mental! Yes, just as well that your oven doesn't lure you into revealing your bank details I don't think I can remember one single instance where you've led me to unpleasant places, by choice We've disagreed on a few books, but I think those are ones that we each read without knowing the other one was reading them, too... Anyhow, I had too many library books on the go back in July and so I never got around to reading The Bees. I'm somewhat hesitant about the book nowadays. It intimidates me You tend to advocate a lot of odd activities, missy! (And as I'm replying to you so late, you won't even have any idea what it was that you were advocating If you want to know, you'll have to scroll back ) It's important to have goals in life! That is very true... I don't know how they do what they do. Especially when it's poetry and prose. Non-fiction is a day at the park in comparison! That's a good scene right there... It's been too long since I've watched P&P! On New Year's Eve I saw a friend and I told her a still had her copy of Girl with a Pearl Earring (the movie). She couldn't remember which movie that was, and I said, it's the one with Darcy and paintings. She had no idea what I was talking about! I then said that actually, that's Colin Firth. She still had no idea Gotta love your meandering 180s!
-
I'm sorry that 2016 wreaked havoc in your life in some ways, and that your reading wasn't quite up to par with previous years I hope Steven's job will be secured soon! It's no wonder it's made you read less, and buy more. Book buying is so therapeutic, isn't it I hope you have a smashing reading year in 2017, chalie!
-
Good to see you back, Ooshie! And it's nice to go over the books you read back in 2016! We read the same amount of books, 52. I wish I'd been able to do more, though... Oh pish-posh, who cares about that! This is your thread and you do as you like!
-
I can totally understand that Seems like quite a few of us have made our threads more simple this year!
-
I wish they'd made more seasons, I can't believe it all ended after only one season
