  1. It boggles the mind why I haven't got around to reading this yet, I have a strange premonition that it's a book I will absolutely love. It is, however, on the Amazon wish-list so we'll see if Christmas brings about any luck on that front... Slow going with The Devil in the Marshalsea for me, but not through lack of enjoyment. I'm about 150 pages in and honestly, there's just something about the author's style that I love, although I can't quite put my finger on it.
  2. Hi, welcome to BCF. I recently finished my first Karin Slaughter book, Triptych and thought it was excellent. Have you read it? (I assume you probably have.) I'm very much looking forward to exploring her works further.
  3. I bought a couple of books in WH Smiths yesterday - The Abduction by Jonathan Holt and The Devil in the Marshalsea by Antonia Hodgson. Started the latter in the bath earlier and I've been really impressed so far - love the author's style and can't wait to get going with it.
  4. Luckily for me I'm not... but sadly for some the comic-book movie epidemic is only going to get worse. Marvel have films being made until 2019 and have ideas/story-lines set up as far as 2028. Their output is going to be crazy over the next ten years.
  5. This was on the short-list on our last cinema visit but I couldn't turn my nose up at Interstellar, really. I am definitely looking forward to catching The Imitation Game - probably next - though, as me and the girlfriend (her more) are big fans of Benedict Cumberbatch.

    More football

How did they get on Tuesday night?
  7. I've heard about some of the sudden high levels of snow in the US. Holding off here, just wet and cold so far. Suspect it's coming though...
  8. These are very interesting questions, even if like you said they aren't exactly answered. Missing Person added to the wishlist.
  9. Laughing at the 'can't rush these things' - so true. In all seriousness, there's not many better feelings than well-organised books--be it in list form or the actual shelves. I'm glad you've got them to a level you're almost happy with. I too want pictures!
  10. Well I appreciate you both talking around it. If anything it's making me more intrigued.
  11. Thanks for this one. Been interested in it for a while and at that price it would've been rude to say no!
  12. I need to stay away from people talking about The Walking Dead - makes me nervous I'll ruin something.
  13. Definitely adding I Am Pilgrim to my wishlist - particularly as I've been on a bit of a thriller kick of late. For some strange reason, I'd had this pegged as some kind of YA novel (perhaps it was the cover or something, I never really bothered to check) but I'm glad it's not. It sounds great and I'm certain I'll check it out.
  14. Got stuck into Triptych by Karin Slaughter last night and ended up blitzing through it well into the early hours of this morning. That's the problem with crime thrillers in this vein: they're just impossible to put down. I enjoyed this one. It had a unique way of building up the plot and characters with a satisfying - if somewhat expected dénouement. Good stuff.
  15. Don't really understand why people consider this a bad thing on the publisher's part? They're offering a new book for a discounted price. It's just unfortunate for those that have already bought it. Happens with everything nowadays, not just books...
  16. Offering a deal? Horrible way to treat your customers, that.
  17. I'm going to see Interstellar with the girlfriend in a couple of hours. So excited.
  18. Watching Wawrinka vs Federer at the ATP Finals. Cracking all-Swiss battle this.. Stan took the first set 6-4 but Roger bounced back to take the second set tie-breaker 7-5. Decider it is.
  19. The only Ali Smith book I've ever read was The Whole Story and Other Stories for my creative writing class in my final year at university, and I absolutely loved it. I thought she was fantastic. Where would you suggest I go next? Perhaps one of her novels? Or do you just love her so much that you couldn't possibly suggest a starting point?
  20. Chinese takeaway tonight. I had sweet and sour chicken, egg-fried rice and chips. Love a Saturday night food indulgence now and again...
  21. Amidst all this frustration I'd like to say thanks at least for bringing it to my attention as I just picked it up.
  22. Good decision, Claire. Detective Michael Ormewood listened to the football game on the radio as he drove down DeKalb Avenue toward Grady Homes. Triptych by Karin Slaughter.
  23. Just re: the Bronte discussion, I live about ten minutes away from where they lived in Thornton. If that... I finished The Devil's Garden by Richard Montanari this morning, after sensibly not pushing myself any later than quarter to three in the small hours last night in order to get it done. Really enjoyed it, as usual with his novels. I liked the unique approach of knowing who the killer was from the start rather than the traditional 'whodunnit'. Don't get me wrong, he's great at the former as well - but it's good to mix it up a bit. This one was suitably gripping and had an interesting plot to it - would definitely recommend to those that appreciate murky crime thrillers.
  24. Watched Federer against Murray at the ATP Finals... I'm trying really hard not to laugh.
  25. Okay... well, I thought I'd suggest it just in case she has. I'm sure she'll be able to tell me if not - was just a suggestion.
