  1. I might join you with Revival Anna, it's been on the list for a while...
  2. Ooh goody! She's awesome! To be fair, I'm actually really enjoying the storyline for this one as well. I get the feeling I'm going to be saying that a lot considering I have many, many more books to go in the series. Perhaps I should dig out the Discworld thread so I can plot my progress... Do! They're superb.

You're not the only one and you're in good company!
  4. I've recently started watching Dexter again too (with the girlfriend--she hasn't seen any, I have). We've just finished season two, so a little bit ahead of you guys at the moment, but we're watching quite slowly so you'll both catch up. Perhaps we should make a thread (or resurrect it if one already exists)? I'd be glad to discuss the episodes again... it's been ages since I finished the series.
  5. I'm usually busy most Saturdays, but I'm sure I could get some spare time at some stage of the weekend to join in. I think the actual Halloween weekend would make sense though...
  6. Started Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett yesterday and already over halfway through. The Discworld books are just so enjoyable - it's so easy to lose yourself in the story and characters. I am missing Rincewind though...
  7. House of Leaves sounds like my kind of book - deliciously complex but decidedly rewarding. On another note: I'm glad your reading mojo has returned Kylie. It's such an inconvenience when it goes missing.
  8. The last ODI between England and Australia... I'm a glutton for punishment.

  10. News item from Westover (me.) weekly Enterprise, August 19, 1966: RAIN OF STONES REPORTED - Carrie by Stephen King
  11. Been listening to the Stones this morning, currently making my way through their album Let It Bleed.
  12. I used to have a to-be-read list, but I've refused to do a recount in the last couple of years. With buying new books every year, I think it's probably unlikely I'll ever get through everything I want to read, but you never know. I'm still young, and I still have a lot of books I'm probably never going to read, that I could get rid of (charity shops, friends, etc.) I've started worrying about it less though. It's good to know I have the freedom to pick through a massive selection of books every time I'm looking for a new read. I'll get to what I can--I don't want to feel pressured into thinking "I should read this, or this many books in any given time..." *shrugs*

Had a wonderful time at Headingley yesterday, topped off in the end by an England win. It was very much a team performance from us - the Aussies had two big spells, one in the middle - Maxwell and Bailey - with Wade and Hastings hitting big at the end (65 runs off the last five overs--just when we thought we'd restricted them to a measly total). Saying that, I always thought 300 was a total England could chase, and we went about it nicely. There was no heroics from anyone (aside from, perhaps, Morgan's 92, but that was a patient innings and allowed the others a bit of freedom in the middle). But really, there didn't need to be. Almost everyone chipped in nicely and in the end it was a pretty comfortable chase). Great day, great win. Series levelled at 2-2. Tomorrow should be fun!

Hi Reverie, welcome to BCF. I'm sure you'll settle in great here.
  15. Thanks bobbles. Now, will all due politeness and loveliness, STOP please guys.
  16. Hi bobbles. Yeah, I've seen the '73 one, always thought it was pretty good. Book definitely better so far, mind...
  17. Well, I read Holes a long time ago at school but other than that I haven't read any of his other novels. Would love to re-read Holes and read the sequel though - I'd probably get nostalgic for old English classes.
  18. Thanks, Gaia. Decided on Stephen King's Carrie in the end. Have seen the film before - and very much enjoyed it - but that hasn't detracted from the book so far. I'm not very familiar with King's writing (yet: I intend to get acquainted with it soon) but this is strong, visceral prose. Even in the early pages I'm very much gripped. Great stuff.
  19. Funny you should mention this, I've just finished The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett and there's a terrific scene in it where Death is trying to learn bridge and he says (I'm paraphrasing a bit): "HUMANS PLAY THIS FOR FUN? BUT THEY ONLY LIVE EIGHTY OR SO YEARS." Not that I have anything against the game but it does highlight - quite amusingly - the fact that it's a bit long and complicated to try learn. I can't imagine I would've enjoyed The Cardturner much either.

I don't know, La Masia have an impressive track record when it comes to future stars, including being responsible for the three Ballon D'or finalists in the same year (2010 I believe).
  21. Yeah, I'm a bit late too but I'd like to throw my welcome into that hat. I'm sure you're already settling in great.
  22. That's a really, really nice cover. I keep wanting to order this book more each time I come in your thread.
  23. The Book Thief is a wonderful book - glad you're enjoying it.
  24. Finished Terry Pratchett's The Light Fantastic last night, and it was BRILLIANT. So, so funny. I feel like I've been missing out all these years I haven't read the Discworld novels. Thankfully I'm now putting that to rights. Not sure what to read next, with have a flick through the Kindle on my way to work...

The video description says it's Sergi Oriol from Barca B U-12 side. Looks like another talent that may eventually come out of Barcelona's fabled La Masia facilities (not that we're short of those).
